Trio off to Stratford
Three young men from Exeter have become valuable
members of this year's edition of the Stratford junior
baseball club.
The three Paul Brooks and Paul and Perry Pooley
played with Crediton minor teams the last couple of years.
Brooks is one of the Stratford starting pitchers while
Perry Pooley is the regular catcher and Paul Pooley has
been taking a turn at shortstop.
In addition, Paul Brooks was in London Saturday atten-
ding a try-out camp of the Toronto Blue Jays.
More Blue Jay chirps
While mentioning the Toronto Blue Jays, we have
several bits of information which appear to be rather in-
teresting.
While the Blue Jays have tailed off from an early
'suspicious start they have shown well in a couple of
departments.
First of all attendance at Toronto has been exceptional.
In their first 25 home dates they have drawn an average
crowd in excess of 22,000.
Left handed pitcher Gerry Garvin in addition to seven
victories appears well on the way to setting an American
league record for the number of men picked off first base.
To date, Garvin has caught 10 opposing runners napping
at first. The record is believed to be held by left Bill Lee at
14 in 1974.
Catcher Al Ashby has shown well in a defensive way.
The last time we checked Ashby had thrown out 27 opposing
runners who had aspirations of stealing second.

ice time for the season will cost

Ron Bogart, Who was returned
Wednesday night as president of
the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association, said last season was
"in general, quite successful, in
view of the circumstances".
He told the annual meeting
that he hoped the program would
be bigger and better when the
Association moves into the new
rec centre this season and that
registrations will be up to their
previous levels or better.
Registrations dropped con-
siderably last season when minor
hockey had to move to Huron
Park. Bogart suggested this was
the main reason for the decline
as many parents weren't
prepared for the extra travel in-
volved.
Bogart said he hoped more
parents would become involved
in the Association this season
and he said the retiring ex-
ecntive recommended that more
committees be established to
draw more people into the
various programs.
Some of those committees
would be for dances, fund rais-
ing, various hockey tour-
naments, socials, membership
and equipment.
In the election of officers con-
ducted by past president Bev
Skinner, the new first vice-
president is Wayne Pearce and
the second vice-president is Jim
Pfaff. John McNeilly is the
treasurer and Bill Batten was
returned as secretary. The

Southpaw Jim Guenther was in
fine form Friday for the Tigers as
he held the Crediton team to only
four hits and they were spread
over the last four innings.
Guenther recorded a total of 18
strikeouts and was able to strike
out the side in the fourth sixth,
seventh and ninth innings.
The Crediton hits were singles
by lCim McKinnon, Rick Bowers
and Steve Bedour and a double
from the bat of Jeff O'Brien.

this week as they chalked up wins

Thursday night in Thorndale
the Tigers scored a 20-4 win over
the Thorndale Angels, or maybe,
it was 314.
Dashwood scored 11 runs in the
top of eighth inning but the game

curfew and the score reverted
back to 20-4 at the end of the
seventh.
Friday night on their home
field, the Tigers downed the

Monday night was postponed.
Exeter fairgrounds will be the scene this Saturday of
the annual Mid-Western Quarter Horse Show.
Sponsorship of this popular event handled for quite a
few years by the Exeter Kinsmen club has been taken over
by the Exeter Saddle Club.
Over the years this show continues to be one of the
largest of its kind in the province of Ontario as far as the
number of contestants is concerned.
The saddle club is to be commended in getting behind
the show along with many Exeter and area firms which are
showing their support by providing trophies.
Congratulations are also due the saddle club on the es-
tablishment of their own show ring and other facilities at
Huron Park. With the help of a $1,500 Wintario grant, a
lighting system is being installed.
Secretary Jack Malone tells us it is easier to operate
shows during the evening in the summer months and the
new lights will certainly add to the enjoyment of the many
horse enthusiasts who are members of the Exeter saddle
club,
Getting back to Saturday's quarter horse show, the
halter events will get underway at 8 a.m. with the more ex-
citing performance classes going in the afternoon starting
at 1 p.m.
Afternoon classes include western riding, barrel races,
pole bending and reining to name only a few.
The judge for this year's show is Leon W. Losey of New
York and the arena director will be Ron Swartz who has
been around horse shows for many years.
Dr. Gary Balsdon of Exeter will be the attending
veterinarian, Wayne Gilbert of Granton will handle the an-
nouncing chores and Joan Riseborough Hardie of London is
the corresponding secretary.

A good move
The recent announcement by the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
that Jack Chipchase will handle their coaching chores for
the 1977-78 Senior Continental season appears to be a pop-
ular one.
Jack better known as "Chipper" has a solid background
in professional hockey not only on the ice but behind the
bench and in the front office.
His playing career in junior and professional ranks
spans a total of 17 years and it took him to a lot of cities.
Jack's longest stay was probably at Roanoke Valley in
the Central league. If our memory serves us correctly he
was there for about seven years.
He coached several years at Roanoke and the last year
doubled as general manager. While playing he received
several special awards from the fans for his dedicated play.
With Chipchase taking care of the on-ice activities of
the team, Don Urbshott will be able to devote all of his time
to the managerial duties.
The Jets are very fortunate to have one of the best
organizations in the OHA senior loop. They are top notch
right from president Harry Loyens down through Urbshott
and Chipchase to a good group of dedicated hockey players.
Chipchase has promised the executive that he will come
up with an interesting and successful team. He will be
teaching a system similar to that in use by coach Fred
Shero of the Philadelphia Flyers.
The new Jets coach will be stressing conditioning and
will have a team capable of putting out a full 60 minutes of
hockey.

forceful soccer for the full 90
minutes of an Ausable district
game against Lucan at Canner's
Field Sunday for a 2-0 win. It was
a complete turn-around for the
local club after lapsing against
Forest the week before in a 2-1
loser.
The Centennials got both goals
in the opening half.
Al Hern at right wing opened
the scoring early with a nicely
timed shot off a passing series
into the penalty area from the
left. Matt Muller at left-midfield
later turned a serving from left-
winger Wes Abbott into a marker
with a low bouncing shot that
hopped through the Luc an
keeper's hands.
The Centennials tied their
plays together well, triggering
many from midfielders Dick

them off, at the cost of winning by

passed up some thoughtfully
created space on their left now

Lucan backs with good tactical
moves.
Even so, the Centennials were
in control of the game all the way

defence with Jim Webb and Bill

Joe Laurie at right fullback and
Rene Kirmse at left.
