Council endorse idea
for two-hour parking
After July 1, you will no longer
be able to park your car on the
main street of Grand Bend for an
entire Sunday afternoon. The
Chamber of Commerce
recommended to council at their
regular meeting Monday, a two
hour parking limit be posted on
the main street for Saturdays,
Sundays and holidays over the
summer months,
Thirty members of Grand Bend
Golden Age Club met Wednesday
afternoon for their May meeting
at the Village Inn Retreat,
President William Love
presided. A new Canadian Flag
was sent to the group by Larry
Condon, M.P. of Middlesex-
London-Lambton.
A bus trip is in the planning
stage for June 28.

Golden Agers plan to go together

The Chamber recommended a
parking violation officer be hired
to enforce the parking restric-
tions in effect from 10 a,m. to 6
p.m. with violaters being subject
to a $2 fine.
Lack of adequate parking on
the main street prompted the
Chamber's proposal. The
business people feel cars parked
for an entire day on the main
June 23 to conduct a bingo game
for the residents.
Group six provided an in-
teresting program. Mrs. Matt
Relouw told several humorous
stories. Mrs. Nola Love and Mrs.
Fern Love presented a skit en-
titled, "Holding the bucket."
Matt Relouw played several
mouth organ selections, and the
group enjoyed a short sing-song
and lunch was served by Inn
staff. This was the club's last
regular meeting until Setember.
street are detrimental to their
business as there is not turnover
of vehicles and customers are
unable to find parking spots.
In order to give the merchants
on the main street a place to park
their own cars, the Chamber
proposed the village should rent
the vacant lot owned by Ausable
Holding Lts. (behind the village
Inn and Ravelles), for the ex-
clusive use of parking by Main St.
merchants and employees.
The cost of implementing such
a parking program was
estimated by the Chamber at
$1800 including the wages of a
student to catch violaters, the
cost of 40 signs stating the
parking regulations and the
printing of 2,000 sets of parking
tickets. Half of this would be paid
by the Chamber with the other
half being paid by the village.
The Council agreed something
must be done to improve the
parking conditions and felt the
Chambers proposal would be a
positive first step.
Council agreed to take
responsibility for the program
including the hiring of a student
and ,enforcement of the
regulations.
' Concerning the renting of the
alternative parking lot for the
merchants, Reeve Bob Sharen
and Councillor Bill Baird
declared a conflict of interest and
retired from the discussion.
Council finally decided they
should appoint the Chamber as
their official agents and have
them take care of getting and
maintaining the lot.
Both the Chamber and the
council agreed the parking limits
would be in force only until Labor
Day and a complete review would
be done at that time. If it was felt
the project was not working at
that time, it would not
necessarily be implemented next
year.
closing time
A by-law to change the closing
time in the Village of Grand Bend
to 1:30 a.m. instead of 2:30 a.m.
was given its first and second
readings and referred to a
committee of the whole council
for further discussion during
Council's regular Monday
meeting.
The by-law is the result of a
request from the OPP stationed
in Grand Bend for the summer to
attempt to help them alleviate
some of the problems occuring in
the early morning hours on the
village streets.
Council did not give the by-law
its third and final reading as they
wish to give objectors a chance to
state their case before making
the by-law official.
A request by the village council
to the Chamber of Commerce for
a $1500 donation towards the
beach patrol was turned down by
the Chamber as their by-law does
not let them support municipal
projects. However, the Chamber
informed council they do wish to
help and have offered to forego
their annual $1500 grant from the
village so that money may be
used to support the beach patrol.
Councillor Harold Green in-
formed council there will be four
lifeguards on beach patrol during
weekends and holidays with two
on duty through the week.
Permission was given to the
Grand Bend Art studio to allow
them to sell carnations during the
Baffaloburger Festivities ex-
cluding in the actual beer tent.
The proceeds will go to the Art
Studio.
Council learned the Chamber
wants to go ahead with the land-
scaping of the two islands at the
west end of the main street.
Boulders and shrubs will be used
on the larger island with a flag
pole in the centre and a large
boulder will be used on the small
island. Council gave the Chamber
the go-ahead.
