He'll Love 'Em!
For a long time, I've admired
those dainty little earrings, that
only girls with pierced ears can
wear, and I finally decided to get
my brother-in-law to pierce my
ears.
He's a doctor, you see. He
pierced my sister's ears without
any problems, he pierced my
niece's ears without any
problems, and he would pierce
my ears without any problems
and without any charge. At least,
I assumed there would be no
charge.
I arrived on Monday and plann-
ed to stay until Saturday. When I
asked John whether he'd do the
job, he answered, "Oh, I don't
know."
Then began our customary
waiting game. Neither of us
mentioned the subject again, but
on Friday, he brought the
needles home. The kids were
more excited than I was. "Will it
bleed, Dad?" the five-year old
asked almost hopefully.

By ELAINE tovvNsEND
After supper, John just
happened to remark about all the
silly women who were going to
require plastic surgery on their
ears, because they wore large
heavy earrings that stretched
their ear lobes and because they
ripped the skin by catching the
earrings on their clothing.
I learned long ago not to listen
to his yarns, but I postponed the
operation until morning because
I felt extremely tired.
That night I had a strange
dream, I was standing in front of
my mirror, admiring a new pair
of 14 carat gold earrings shaped
like horseshoes and remember-
ing their price tag of $14.95.
I began pulling my sweater
over my head, Suddenly I felt a
tug on my left ear. "Oh no, my
earring's caught," I groaned.
I wiggled and I squirmed, but
to no avail. The sweater moved
neither up nor down without pull-
ing my ear.
When my sister's neighbour
found herself in a similar
predicament, she had to get her
husband to free her. Since I
didn't have one of those, I con-
sidered other alternatives.
Maybe I could find my way to the
neighbours, but I couldn't let
them see me like this. What if I
met someone else on the way,
like a salesman? I could
probably grope to the phone and
dial for help.
Instead, I decided to try one
more time to wiggle out. I gently
tugged the sweater, it seemed
looser than before. The second
time, I pulled a little harder, the
third time, I pulled harder than I
intended to. A sudden searing
pain slashed my ear lobe, as I
felt the gold wire tearing my
flesh. Drops of warm red blood
mingled with sweat and oozed
onto my brand new $22 white
sweater. My ear throbbed, my
head swam, my knees buckled.
The next thing I knew I was ly-
ing on an operating table and
John was standing over me with
a scalpel in his hand, grinning.
That's when I woke up. By
morning, I had decided I could
live without pierced ears for a
while longer.
Don't jump to conclusions,
John's story had nothing to do
with my decision. He just made
me think, and I came up with
several practical reasons for
postponing the procedure.
First, to avoid infection, I
should buy good earrings, and
they would be expensive. There
are other things I could spend the
money on, such as food. Second-
ly, they would be just something
else for me to misplace. Thirdly,
I don't like earrings that much
anyway.
When and if I change my mind
again, I know John will splutter,
"You had your chance and blew
it!"
But, if I ignore his protests,
he'll give in. I never listen to him
anyway. Well, I hardly ever
listen to him.
