Good start
for soccer
The three Lucan minor soccer
teams started the 1977 season off
on the right foot with victories
over St. Marys teams, Saturday.
The Lucan atoms ran up an
easy 7-0 victory while the
mosquitoes were on the right side
of a 5-1 score and the pee wees
won 2-1.
Paul Crunican was the top
scorer for the atoms with a three
goal effort while Jeff Shipley and
Kevin Koricina each booted two
goals. Gerry Emery was in goal
to record the shutout.
A three goal performance by
David Gilmour was best for the
Lucan mosquitos.. Getting single
scores were Philip Clarke and
Eddie Hayter. Graham Smith
replied for St. Marys.
Eric Drost and Chris Sockett
were on the firing end of the
Lucan pee wee goals. Scoring for
St. Marys was Cameron Smith.
The Lucan squirts met Exeter
in two exhibition games this week
getting a 2-0 win and a 1-1 tie.
David Hessells and Kevin
Koricina were the Lucan
marksmen.
Two Lucan girls teams are also
in action. The seniors lost 5-1 to
London Crusaders and the
juniors were defeated 2-0 by St.
Thomas,

Explorers
graduate
The Lucan-Clandeboye
Explorers met on Wednesday
evening for their Graduation
Expedition, with several mothers
in attendance.
Following the showing of a
filmstrip "What's nice? Rice",
describing the food problems in
the world, which proved very
interesting. Counsellor Kathy
Kaune and her daughter
Explorer Lisa served sample
snacks, one nutritious and the
other "junk" food, The hymn
"Can a Little Child Like Me" was
followed by the offering and
Dedication Prayer by Explorer
Jennifer MacDonald.
Chief Counsellor Mabel Froats
told of the topics studied in the
last four months and a filmstrip
"Made in God's Image" was
much enjoyed,
Mrs. Froats conducted the
Graduation Ceremony for Lori
Riley and Jill Cunningham. The
Motto "Be Doers of the Word"
was repeated and Maria Van
Saass, Lisa Kaune and Jennifer
MacDonald explained its
meaning,
The two graduates read their
stories on "What Being an
Explorer. Means to Me", also a
poem on "Questions a raduate
might ask", Certificates were
presented to these girls and all
Explorers repeated the closing
prayer.
The average home owner in the
village of Lucan will be facing an
increase of about $40 when the
1977 tax notices arrive,
Taxes for the homeowner with
an average assessment of $14,000
will increase to $498.26. This is
based on a mill rate of 35.59 mills
representing an increase of 2.5
mills from 1976.
Only three accidents were
investigatedthis week by officers
of the Lucan detachment of the
Ontario Provincial Police but
damages were high at $8,300.
Wednesday, May 18 at 1 a.m. a
vehicle driven by Lawrence
Kellett, RR 3, Exeter, left High-
way 4, just south of the Mount
Carmel road and struck a sign
post.
Constable G. N. Wilcox was the
investigating officer and set
damages at $1,000.
Constable °Jim Craig listed
damages at $1,800 on Wednesday,
May 25 when a vehicle driven by
Joanne Waugh, London was
forced off County Road 41, south
of County Road 28 by an'unknown
vehicle.
Sunday, five persons suffered
minor injuries when vehicles

Seniors enjoy
cards and crafts
Members of the Busy Buddies'
and the Sunshine groups met for
cards and crafts Thursday af-
ternoon with President Merna
O'Neil chairing the meeting. A
letter of thanks was read from
Secretary Ethel Crouch for the
plant received following the last
meeting and announcement of a
Seniors Day to be held at Pearce-.
Williams Camp on Wed. June 15.
All Seniors are invited.°
A minutes silence was ob-
served in memory of the late
Harold Cobleigh, a valued
member.
Bowlers are needed for the last
few weeks of the season, each
Tuesday at 1.30.
Forty-one members have paid
their money for the Huron
Country Playhouse trip. Those
who haven't are asked to get their
$5.00 to Cecil Robb immediately.
Non-memberS may fill vacant
seats at a cost of $9.00, by con-
tacting Mr. Robb.
Birthday greetings are ex-
tended to Lillian Kelly.
Agnes Hots on distributed
tickets on the Busy Buddies' quilt
draw to be made the Fair on
August 14. The, quilt will be on
display uptown later in June,
Pearl Shoebottom won the
lady's high score in Euchre,
Kathleen Neil lady's lone hands,
and Harriet Holmes, lady's low.
Men's prizes were taken by Ivan
Stanley, high, Jean Miller,
playing a man's card Lone Hands
and Joe Carter Low.
The Bridge players just played
for fun and the Busy Buddies
continued their individual quilt
blocks, in their craft group. For
those interested in the Ceramics,
and Pottery, due to reasons
beyond our control• classes will
not commence until September.
Lunch was provided by Pat
Merriman, Rita and Luther
Morley and Edythe Murdy.

Council was able to hold the
Lucan village rate at 12.76 mills,
the same as last year, The
secondary school education levy
went up 1,77 mills while the
County of Middlesex rate rose .91
mills. The elerrientary school rate
went down .18 mills.
The commercial property rate
increased 2,84 mills to 40.68 mills.

collision on Concession 2 and 3 of
Biddulph township, south of
Highway 4. Constable W. R.
Disher estimated damages at
$5,500.

for Christmas. Excellent choices,
don't you agree.
Decide early which one you
would like to take. Forms will be
sent home with students early in
September, but you may register
with Rick at Fanshawe, if .you
have no children in School, 453-
7230, Extension 282.
A mill raises $1 on each $1,000 of
assessment.
While holding the line on the
village rate, council was able to
set aside $7,500 as a reserve for
fire fighting equipment, an ac-
count which was started at $5,000
last year.
Reeve Ivan Hearn said the
account is being maintained to
replace a 20 year-old pumper
truck with a new vehicle which is
expected to cost about $60,000.
Council increased its
recreation reserve by $5,000 to
$11,000 and established an
operating surplus of $10,000 to,
assist in covering expenditures
until the first tax installment is
collected July 15. The final
payment is due November 15.
Village costs will increase from
about $214,000 last year to
$220,000. Council was able to
retain its 12.76 mill rate for
residential purposes and 15.01 for
commercial through increased
assessments and provincial
grants.
