Honor McGillivray teacher

A retirement tea, honouring
Mrs. Margaret Vernon, teacher
at McGillivray Central School
was held in the school, gym
Sunday afternoon. Many former
students, their parents and
friends of Mrs. Vernon, gathered
to wish her well.
Tea and cookies were served by
members of the Home and School
Association, with Mrs. Jackson
and Mrs. MacDonald, friends of

at Thames Road

Quite a number of ladies, 4 H
members and their leaders at-
tended the 4 H Achievement Day
Saturday at South Huron District
High School Exeter.
The Thames Road and Elim-
ville Manse Committee held a
very successful pork barbecue
Saturday evening at the church
grounds. Around 500 people at-
tended.
Mr. and Mrs. Harold Robinson
and Jan of Toronto spent the
weekend with Rev. Barry and
Mrs. Robinson and Elizabeth,
Mrs, Lorne Passmore was a
patient in St. Joseph's Hospital
for a few days last week.
Mrs. Mac Hodgert and Mrs,
Glen Stewart attended the
weekend at Westminster College
London for United Church
Women,
Master Harlen Tinney, Exeter,
spent the weekend with his uncle
and aunt Mr. and Mrs. Ross
Hodgert.
Mrs and Mrs. Art Heard of St,
Marys, Mr. and Mrs. George
Kellett visited on Sunday with the
ladies' aunt Mrs. Crispin of
Hanover,
Sunday morning at the regular
church service, Mr, and Mrs.
James Benton joined the church
by profession of faith and Mrs.
Edwin Miller, Nancy Richardson
and John Miner by transfer. We
welcome them into our church,

at resource centre
United Church Sunday in the
absence of Rev. Beaton who was
conducting the anniversary
service in the Brucefield United
Church,
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Hirtzel
attended the Confirmation ser-
vice at the Lutheran Church in
London Sunday when their
grandson Ricky Keller was
confirmed and were guests
'following the service at the home
of their daughter and son-in-law,
Mr. and Mrs. Karl Keller and
family.
Mrs. Vernon, and Mrs. Verona
Brunswick and Mrs. Wes.
Watson, former teachers at
McGillivray School, presiding at
the tea table.
During a short program,
chaired by school principal Mrs.
Ila Hamilton, best wishes for a
happy retirement were ex-
pressed by Miss Betty McIntyre
and Mr. Alan Taylor on behalf of
present and former teaching
colleagues; Ellison Whiting,
member of the school board when
Mrs. Vernon began teaching in
McGillivray. Mr. Jim Scott,
member of the Middlesex Board
of Education for this area; Mr.
McIntosh; superintendent of
schools and Mr. Gummow,
director of education with the
Middlesex Board. Joanne and
Janis Larkin made a presen-
tation of a watch on behalf of
staff, students, parents and
friends.
Personals
David Corbett and Todd Lewis
attended the Scout and Cub
Camporee which was held at
Point Farms Provincial Park,
north of Goderich.
Mrs. Earl Dixon invited the
Brinsley U.C.W. to her home in
Centralia Tuesday evening for
their June meeting. .
Jane Corbett and John Becker,.
Guelph, spent the weekend with
Mr. & Mrs. Charles Corbett. Jane
is working this summer in the
Guelph Civic Museum.
Sympathy is extended to Mrs.
Merle Lewis in the recent death
of her youngest son Claire who
passed away Tuesday.
Mrs. Jack Trevithick attended
the Westminster college for the
weekend Rally of the U.C.W.
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Mawson,
Parkhill were recent visitors with
Kathleen and Gordon Morley.

London Saturday.

CENTRALIA
Centralia U.C.W. met at the
church and then travelled to
Mitchell United Church Resource
Centre for their May meeting.
Mrs. Alvin Lobb, president,
opened the business with a poem.
Reports were heard and ap-
proved. The fall regional will be
held in Centralia.
Mrs. June Essery and Mrs.
Ralph Lightfoot convened the
programme. Mrs. Essery opened
with a meditation "Jesus the Son
of God" and prayer followed.
Mrs. Lightfoot read the scripture.
Mrs. Essery gave an interesting
paper on "The Lord is My
Rock",
The study was taken by Mrs.
Lightfoot with commentations on
several ' old hymns, such I as
"The Church is one Foundation"
which was sung to end the
devotional.
Mrs, Essery introduced Mrs.
Mantle She and her husband
look after the Resource Centre
and she showed a film and spoke
on the books and tapes for rent
and also invited anyone to come
and browse and read in the
reading room. A time was given
for browsing. The girls served
lemonade and fancy cookies.
The Sunday School will be in
charge of the Sunday School
Anniversary service Sunday
June 5 at 11 a.m. There will be
special music,

Dr. and Mrs. Imre Toth,
Kimberley, Randy, and Natalie
of Boston and Miss Ada Mitchell,
Montpelier, Ohio were weekend
guests with Mr. and Mrs. Ken-
neth Hodgins and all attended the
Files-Hodgins wedding in New St,
James Presbyterian Church in
London on Saturday.
Rev, Grant Mills, Exeter, was
in charge of the service in the
Presbytery was held Thursday
evening.
Rev. Mr. Macdonald, Lon-
desbormrepresentative of Huron
Presbytery chaired the meeting.
Brinsley church has been
associated with Ailsa Craig and
Carlisle Pastoral Charge for a
period of 22 years.
Progress is slow in the
changeover and more voting by
both churches and preliminary
work is needed before the final
decision which again comes
before conference in September.
Mr. & Mrs. Cyril Morley were
guests at the Files-Hodgins
wedding Saturday at the New St.
James Presbyterian Church in
London, The bride Marikay
Hodgins being Mrs. Morley's
niece.
