Join in the fun - a walk for the Centre will give you the chance of winning one of 3, 10 speed bicycles, A new training track for area harness race owners and trainers will be officially open this week. It has been established by Jack Parsons on his Stephen township farm located about two miles west of Exeter on Highway 83. In addition to a regulation half mile track, Parsons has moved the horse barns from Exeter Community Park to his farm and had them completely renovated. Workmen were busy over the weekend putting the final touches on the inside of the barn which will provide accommodation for 16 horses. Installation of a wash rack, hydro, water and painting of the outside of the building will be completed in the next couple of weeks. The first of the horses to be trained at the Parsons track are expected to move into their new home today, Thursday. The barn which measures 30 feet by 80 feet was moved from its former Exeter location in eight sections and a 12 foot lean-to is being added to the south side of the barn to allow for storage of hay and straw. The track is expected to be a beehive of activity right from the beginning with at least 11 horses ready to move in as soon as the facility will allow. Heading the list of horses to take advantage of the Parsons track are four from the stable of Whitney and Keith Coates, The Coates stable includes Hi Lea Sue and Widowers Tux who have been competing regularly at the Western Fair Raceway in London, Centennials are blanked A second-half goal by Taxandria's John Slutter gave his club a 1-0 win over Exeter Centennials Sunday in Ausable district soccer. The teams were at Taxandria. The unexplained absence of a league referee delayed the start of the game, which was played under a broiling sun after the clubs agreed on a volunteer of- ficial. It was hard and close match, flawed often by intentional roughness and questionable tackling. But there were also many moments of solid ball handling by both sides, with the single goal indicating how evenly control of the game was balan- ced. Despite the loss, Exeter received excellent goal-keeping from Al Beattie, a regular fullback, who replaced rookie keeper Paul Van Esbroeck, out with an injury from mid-week practice. Good performances were general on the Exeter side, with steady ones coming from Cen- tennial first-year players Matt Muller, who played the full game at centre; Wes Abbott up front, and Rene Kirmse at midfield in substitute roles. Regulars Dick Lord, Al Hern and John Muller were outstanding. The local club plays at Forest Sunday, and will be at home at Canner's Field for a game against Lucan at 2 p,m, Sunday, June 5. Other owners already con- firming stable space are Jim Taylor, Gerry Schenk and Ron Brintnell, Parsons has two horses of his Tigers split ball openers The Dashwood Tigers broke even in their first two games of the season in the Huron-Perth intermediate baseball league. Friday night the Tigers were edged 4-3 by the Clinton Colts, but, Sunday afternoon they went on a scoring rampage to down Thorndale 21-2. Both games were in Dashwood. Friday night the Tigers will be at home to Tillsonburg in an exhibition game and Sunday afternoon they will travel to Kincardine. Home runs make the difference Home runs were an important factor in Sunday's lopsided win for the Dashwood club. Tiger batters blasted three balls over the outfield fences at the Dash- wood Park. Third sacker Terry O'Rourke connected on his long blast in the bottom of the third with bases loaded. John Hayter led off the second inning for this team with a circuit blow and Glen Thurman knocked his homer leading off the seventh frame. The Tigers wasted little time reaching the scoreboard with five runs in the first inning on only two hits, both singles from the bats of Glen Thurman and Kevin Bestard. Hayter's homer upped the score to 6-0 in the second before the first Thorndale run came across the plate in the third. In the Dashwood fourth, O'Rourke's grand slammer provided most of. the power for a five run Dashwood outburst. O'Rourke scored again in the fifth on a single from the bat of Kevin Bestard and Glen Thur- man homered for two runs in the seventh, Seven base hits sent another seven Tiger runs home in the eighth. Doug Fairbairn singled* twice while Dave Parsons, Bob Hoffman, Brad Gregus, Kevin Bestard and Jim Guenther each picked up one hit. Perry Stover went the first seven innings on the mound for the Tigers holding Thorndale to two runs and six hits while striking out eight. Bob Hoffman tossed the last two innings and allowed only one hit, Leave 13 stranded Against Clinton, Friday, the inability to get a hit at the right time cost the Tigers a chance for victory. They left 13 men on the bases. The bases were left loaded in each of the last two innings. John Hayter led the Tigers at the plate with two singles and a double while Rick Schilbe and Jim Dietrich each cracked out two hits. In the first inning Rick Schilbe doubled and scored on a single from the bat of John Hayter, The Tiger eighth produced the other two runs as Schilbe was hit by a pitch and scored on singles by John Hayter and Jim Guenther. Dave Parsons followed with a squeeze bunt- to score Hayter, Southpaw Jim Guenther went Please turn to Page 11 ,BUILD YOUR, WOOD DECK:(:.;;' or PATIO WE'RE OFFERING A COMPLETE PACKAGE THAT LETS YOU INCREASE YOUR LEISURE LIVING SPACE! • Build Your Own Wood Patio Deck, Sun Pool Deck.... Parsons has built the track up and he says the sandy soil drains very well, He added, "With this type of ground we can be ready to take to the track within 15 minutes of a heavy rain, The track is being topped off with a fine gravel which comes from the Parsons farm. Exeter Minor Hockey Assoc. ANNUAL MEETING Wed., June 1 7:30 p.m. SOUTH HURON DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL Parents, coaches and managers are urged to at- tend so plans can be for- mulated for next season in the new rec centre. Baseball and fastball fans in the area should get a fair share of their favorite sport this week and weekend. On the fastball scene, two undefeated teams in the Southwestern Ontario Fastball league meet at Exeter Com- munity Park tonight, Thursday at 9 p.m. The Exeter Royals will be playing host to their arch rivals, the LuCan Irish. Both teams have looked strong in their first few outings and tonight's contest should be very exciting, Brian Hodgins and Cliff Gingerich are the mainstays of the Exeter pitching department and in a similar fashion the Irish are strong on the mound in the persons of Brian Light- foot and Dennis Carty. This league provides an excellent brand of fastball which deserves better fan support than is usually forthcom- ing. A birdie who has an insight into the league suggested to us last' week that Exeter, Lucan and Nairn would be the three strongest teams in the league. The Huron-Perth intermediate league is back in action with four teams seeing regular action. They are the Dashwood Tigers, Crediton Mets, Clinton Colts and Thorn- dale. It's good to see the Crediton Mets in the league to take advantage of the fine new lighting system for baseball which was installed in the Crediton ball park late last fall. The Mets will be a combination of holdovers from the Zurich team and graduates from recent Crediton junior and juvenile teams. Best of luck to all teams seeing action in these two leagues this year. Get your scores and reports in to us and we will be glad to use them on these sports pages. Establish racing track We dropped into the Stephen township farm of Jack Parsons Monday and were impressed with the fine setup he is establishing for area harness horse owners and trainers. The track being provided by Parsons will take the place of the track at the Exeter fairgrounds which was forced out of existence to allow construction of the new recreation centre. In fact, Jack Parsons has moved the horse barns from the Exeter park to his farm and is in the process of having facilities for 16 horses to be stabled there. He has built an official half mile track and some of the top horses in the area will get their training workouts at the Parsons track. It is located on the south side of Highway 83, about two miles west of Exeter. Keith and Whitney Coates will be housing four of their racing stable at the Parsons track. These will include Hi Lea Sue and Widower's Tux. Jim Taylor of Hensall is bringing four horses in; Gerry Schenk of Crediton has two to be stabled and Ron Brintnell will train one horse there. Parsons has two horses which his sons Greg and Rick train and he will provide training and the facilities for other owners and trainers. He said one of the promising horses in his care is owned jointly by himself and Jack Morrissey of Grand Bend. It's a four year-old trotter named Southgate Joe. Newcomers The Port Stanley Dynamites of the Ontario Hockey Association Continental Senior League will be handled by two new coaches when the 1977-78 season rolls around in the fall. Taking over the coaching chores jointly will be Terry Wade and Ted Rabbets. Terry Wade is no stranger to these parts. Being a native of Crediton Terry played minor ball and hockey in these' parts, moved on to intermediate hockey ranks here and should provide good coaching to the Port Stanley club. While we know very little about Ted Rabbetts we learn- ed from his brother Bev who is assistant Postmaster in Ex- eter that he has a solid background in minor hockey in Aylmer and took one team to an Ontario juvenile cham- pionship. Planning meeting Despite the recent hot weather some people are think- ing ahead to when the temperatures will be a lot cooler. The annual meeting of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association will be held next Wednesday night, June 1 at South Huron District High School at 7 : 30 p.m, The election of officers will beheld at this meeting and plans made for what should be an interesting season with a brand new arena to be used as home base for all the local clubs. Help for soccer The regular season for all Exeter minor soccer teams gets underway within the next week or so and coaches are needed for at least two teams. Anyone wishing to help in a coaching capacity is asked to contact president Joe Laurie or Damien Solomon, An interesting league The Exeter and district men's recreational softball league is back in action with eight teams this year and the philosophy of the league is very refreshing. It is to be run as a low-key recreational league which will give men a chance to get out and socialize with others through the game of softball. Participation is the key and it is the league's intention to keep it from becoming overly competitive to the point where its aspect of recreation and fun is lost because of the attitude of winning at all cost. Any player who shows up for a game must be used for at least two innings in that game. Each team will be ex- pected to see that this rule is carried Out. Be sure you vote on June 9
