board has indicated that trustees
could have taken an 18,8 per-cent
increase.
Trustees who supported the
salary increase were: Jim
Carpenter, Bill Broome, Pat
Enright, Frances -Marsman, Pat
Crunican, vice-chairman John
Kavelaars, J.D. Schrader, Tony
Kelley, Larry Mellen, Art van
Waterschoot and Dave
Ducharme.
Those who didn't support the
increase, proposed by Broome,
were: Case Bloetjes, Ben
Cramer, Harvey Gleason and Dr.
Patrick O'Neill.
Chairman O'Neil, who
customarily doesn't vote except
to break a tie, said he thought
"trustees were deserving of an
increase." He said the 18 per-cent
increase is a catch-up figure, not
a raise.
Indexing will maintain the
value of the honoria, he said.
Enright indicated he voted for
the increase "because we were
going to get (it), anyway." It
would have been easy to oppose
the increase, he said, since it was
obvious it would pass.
Cramer said it was "rather
superfluous" for trustees to take
an increase in pay when the
board's dwindling enrolment
eventually will reduce the
honoraria figure.
The Education Act specifies
that a board with an enrolment of
more than 10,000 but less than
40,000 may pay trustees a
maximum of $400 a month. The
London and Middlesex board's
enrolment of 10,800 is expected to
fall below 10,000 by 1980. Boards
with more than 40,000 pupils may
pay trustees a maximum of $600 a
month while those with fewer
than 2,000 can pay up to $100 a
month.
Gleason criticized the increase,
saying trustees already received
enough money, especially
"considering what we're asking
some of our staff" to accept.
Broome's,bid for the 18 percent
increase followed unsuccessful
earlier efforts for a 60 per-cent
trustee pay boost. When the
board made it clear that 60 per-
cent was "too rich," he withdrew
his request for a maximum in-
crease, returning Monday with
the AIB-sanctioned 18 per-cent
increase.
The increases will cost the
board about $5,900 more than was
originally budgeted for trustees'
and chairman's salaries in 1977.
