Public meetings Tuesday for education evaluation
Some 16 committees have been
meeting and working toward
completing reports that sum up
the responses to the many sur-
veys which have beenreturned as
part of the Cooperative School
System Evaluation being con-
ducted in the South Huron
Region.
The Huron County Board of
Education decision in late
February to conduct an
evaluationprogramhas resultedin
the considerable involvement of
many people in the task of
trying to determine the strengths
Juveniles
joy riding
and weaknesses of the local
system and of formulating
recommendations for im-
provements and long-range
planning.
The project has two major
phases, an internal or self-
evaluation and an evaluation
which is carried out by a group of
educators and ministry personnel
from various parts of the
province.
The internal review and report
are just about complete at this
timeand theexternal review team
is expected to be in the county
during the week of May 16-20.
They will beconferringwith lay
people, students, teachers, ad-
ministrators and trustees about
specific areas mentioned or
perceived in the internal report
or about any area that is of
concern to those being in-
terviewed.
In addition, members of the
team will be: examining in-
structional materials and
equipment; visiting classrooms;
discussing courses of study,
grading and record keeping
procedures and meeting for-
mats; observing administrative,
teacher and student activities;
and checking, other records and
data as appropriate.
They will also attempt to
evaluate the system's facilities
both in specific areas, such as
library, physical education,
office space, eating facilities,
and shops and form a general
point of view.
Public meetings
Two meetings are scheduled so
parents and ratepayers will have
an opportunity to interact with
the team. These are set for
Tuesday, May 17 at 7:30 p.m. and
those interested may attend at
either Stephen Central Public
School gym or South. Huron
District High School Library.
The External Evaluation team
is being chaired by Reg. Shad-
bolt, Superintendent of Education
for the Frontenac County Board
of Education.
Following the external review
and report, the two committee
reports will be reviewed
cooperatively and a final sub-
mission will be compiled and
presented to the Huron Board of
Education.
The final report should be
completed by early July.
