However, the championship bid by this year's Exeter Hawks was through the determination of several veteran members of the squad. The two senior members of the tearn—in years of service--are Brian Taylor and Gerald Weido. They started playing for the Hawks in 1972-73, a year after the last championship was won by the team. Matt Muller, Noel Skinner and Rick Ingram joined the team in 1973-74, to make them four-year veterans. In the following season, Don McKellar, Steve Jennison and Randy Lovie made the Hawks and in the 1975-76 season, they were joined by Phil Knight, Ken Pinder, John VanGerwen, Fred Mommersteeg, Tom Hayter, Paul Brooks and Laurie Skinner. The only rookies on this year's squad are Kim McKinnon, Jim Ferguson and. Dave Kinsman, along with the four midgets who have helped at various times of the season, Randy Fisher, Ron Bilcke, Perry and Paul Pooley. There are only three direct ties with the the 1972 Ontario championship team, Bob Drummond helped with the trainer duties and Bev Skinner was president of the sponsoring Exeter Minor Hockey Association. Drummond was the full-time trainor on this year's squad and Skinner had two sons playing, Noel and Laurie. The other tie was the fact that Kim McKinnon's brother r Shane, played on the former cham- pionship squad. This year was the end of the line for three members of the Hawks squad. Noel Skinner, Rick Ingram and Gerald Weido will graduate due to age. There may also be some other holes to fill. A couple of this year's team are considering attending colleges in the U.S. and at least pne other elegible member has indicated he may quit to devote more time to his university-studies now that he has finally been on a winner. Members of this year's midget team are expected to fill most of those holes, along with a.couple of other top prospects on other area minor teams. Although they. played only sparingly in the latter part of the season the four midgets who shared in the Ontario title have no doubt set some sort of record for area hockey players. Randy Fisher, Ron Bilcke, Perry and Paul Pooley have now been members of three Ontario championship teams, having played for the pee wee title holders in 1973 and the bantam winners in 1975. The real "rookie" on this year's team is coach Ron Bogart. He spent only half a season with the Hawks after being named to replace Glen Weise. Team members have indicated that change probably sparked their efforts to a greater extent than anything else in the season. Bogart has not yet indicated whether he will return to the coaching duties next year, nor has manager Fred Mom- mersteeg, who has been with the team for three years. Dear Editor: The Exeter Hawks have just completed a very successful season. After a few early season problems, things settled down and seemed to gel very quickly. We won the league with an exciting victory over Mitchell. After some tense moments and two losses we eliminated Mt. Brydges in four straight games after we sort of took stock of ourselves. The Mitchell series provided some exciting moments but we eventually won the sixth game in overtime. On to Wellington and after losing the first game we won the next four to gain a berth in the finals against Stayner. Four straight in the finals and handing Stayner their first home losses of the season made the victory even more satisfying. We beat a good team but the Hawks were better. We are OHA Junior D Champions. All this would not have been accomplished without superb efforts from 18 of the finest young men I have ever worked with. After our problems were solved in the early new year these young men gave me everything a coach could ask' for —hard work, co- operation, dedication and a supreme effort. This all paid off in winning a championship—a first hockey championship for most of them. Those efforts on the ice will long be remembered by me as coach. You did everything I asked of you and then some. You provided me with a challenge which at first was most difficult but once we worked the problems out and started working together as a unit we became a fine cohesive team. The spirit and desire was un- believable—sure we needled each other, but once on the ice, the effort was for a common goal. We had pride and never let up because we believed we could do it all. This great achievement could not have been poskble without the efforts of many people off the ice. Manager Fred Mom- mersteeg deserves a great deal of credit for his hard work and giving me protection during the" Mitchell series. What would we do without Bob Drummond to look after us., to pan out all the new sticks to everyone at each game and to cut the oranges—oh those good oranges. Thanks to Pat Denomme for helping. Thanks to Steve Grainger and Bob Mommersteeg for timing and score keeping. perience which I will never forget. You have done something for me and I hope I was able to provide something for you both on and off the ice. Sincerely, Ron Bogart Coach Exeter Jr. Hawks * Brominators * Filters * Slides * Diving Boards * Tile, Liner Cleaners Page 10 Times-Advocate, April 28, 1977 Try again pays off for Hawks Thanks to Jerry Rader for his fine co-operation at games and practices.
