This is a very serious matter and I believe that the firemen were justified in their complaints. This week however I would like to comment on the behaviour of the firemen. Last Saturday morning at 2:30 I was rudely awakened by the sound of fire trucks driving past my apartment on Main St. I looked out and could hardly believe my eyes. On the first truck there( seemed to be about 10 people and on the second truck there seemed to be about thirty. They were all yelling and screaming and using the megaphone as well as the siren. A few minutes later they came past our building in the opposite direction. Who is responsible for such By MANUEL CURTS GREENWAY All the members of the Willing Workers of the United Church were in attendance at their meeting Saturday evening which was held in the church. Their guests was the Grand Bend Couples' Club. Paul Turnbull gave any illustrated lecture and answered questions about his experiences in Guatemala where he was engaged in construction work since the devastating earthquake of a little over a year ago. The Willing Workers had given generous financial support to the country, and so were most in- terested in this first hand in- formation of how their donation was used. Mr. & Mrs. Ken Lar- mer led in opening devotions and immature behaviour? I have heard that it was a way to celebrate the Exeter hockey team's victory. Is awakening hundreds of people in the middle of the night any way to celebrate? Why are fire trucks available for oc- casions other than fires? What would have'happened if there had been a fire that night? I would be very happy to have these questions answered. Mary Ellen Kot * * * To The Editor; On Saturday, April 23 around 2,00 a,m, the citizens of Exeter were awakened by alarms and bells ringing, the alarms and bells coming from the Fire Department vehicles. His topic "The role of the Home and School in Ontario's educational scene", was a very timely one, coming as it did in Education Week. As a citizen of Exeter, and an employee as Chief of Police I find it very distasteful and un- believable that someone could take the keys to a Fire Depart- ment vehicle owned by the Town and remove it from the fire station, just to be in a victory parade, especially at 2:00 in the morning. The persons who were responsible for this adventure had no thoughts for other people. I am sure that they did not realize that if anything had happened such as a serious injury to a youth or "a fatal accident occurred to anyone as a result of the prank, the Town of Exeter would be responsible, and for that fact the Town could be sued. I should also like to point out, that, just prior to this escapade, at 2:00, police and ambulances were dispatched to a fatal motor vehicle accident on Highway 83. The Town of Exeter has a proud record for having an ef- ficient and well trained Volunteer Fire Department. This record should be maintained at all costs, As the Chief of Police of the Town of Exeter, I am sure that I would not allow a police vehicle to travel up and down Main Street with its lights flashing and siren wailing, for no apparent reason. In closing, I believe that people should enjoy themselves and have a good time, but in doing so, they should also have con- sideration for their neighbours, E J Day Chief of Police * * Dear Editor: We, the players of the Exeter Hawks, would like to apologize to those people in Exeter who are not sports fans and who were rudely awakened last Friday night. After having just won the All Ontario Junior D championship we felt we had a reason to celebrate and we are sorry for any inconveniences we caused. We thought that the people of Exeter would be glad to join in Our celebration and while we thank the many fans who did support us we extend our apologies to those who were in- cluded against their wishes, This midnight parade has been a ritual for championship teams in Exeter for years and to us it capped off our championship. We have heard that a summons has been served to a member of the Exeter Volunteer Fire Department and if this is true it is hard to believe. The firemen have been some of our most loyal support and while they may have let their emotions get the best of them it only showed their pride in their town; Exeter, It is sad to think that they should be served a charge for showing pride in their town.
