Grass fire spreads to level Granton barn
ATMOSPHERE

By MRS. E. SUMMERS
GRANTON
Granton and Lucan fire
departments responded to a call
from the Carty residence on King
St. Saturday noon, when a grass
fire got out of control, and ignited
an empty barn behind the house.
They were unable to save the
building, but prevented the fire
from spreading to the houses
nearby; it started up again in the
rubble later in the afternoon, but
with the quick response of the
Granton Department it was
finally extinguished. This is the
second fire on King Street within
days of each other and in the
same block, and started by a
grass fire.
Cancer Society
Mrs, Al Cocquyt, Mrs, Robert
Harloff and Mrs. Elmer Sum-
mers assisted the Service to
Patients Committee, Mrs. J.
Debroer and Mrs. T.' Toonders,
with their Bake Sales held at the
Masonic Hall, Lucan, Saturday.
There was a wonderful response
to the request for home baked
goods, and everything was sold
by 11:30 a.m.
The Lucan Biddulph Branch of
the Canadian Cancer wish to
extend their appreciation to all
those, who baked, bought, or
helped in any way for this wor-
thwhile cause.
Granton UCW
The general meeting of the
Granton U.C.W. was held at the
United Church Tuesday evening
with Mrs. Robert Hardie
president in the chair and
opening the meeting with a
reading entitled "I passed Him
by": followed by the scripture.
The various reports were read.
Mrs. Leroy Bryan announced the
date of the Bazaar which will be
November 5. Other items of
business were attended to, then
the meeting was turned over to
Unit (3) who were in charge of
the program.
In the absence of the Unit
president Mrs. Doug Brown, Mrs.
Leroy Bryan took charge of the
program and introduced the
members of a short skit, who
were, Doll, Mrs. John Drost,
Molly, Mrs. Harold Mills, Polly,
Mrs, Robert McAlorum and St.
Peter, Mrs. Eric Chovancek.
This depicted three U.C.W.
members who were at the en-
trance to Heaven, and were in-
forming St. Peter of all the
worthy deeds they had done on
earth but they all had lacked the
service of love to their fellow
men.

What exactly should I
watch out for when buying a
car privately? Also, can you
explain about mechanical
certification?
Car buyers should be especially
careful when contemplating a
private purchase as, unlike the
registered dealer, the seller has
neither a license to lose or a
business reputation to protect.
It's always wise to check the
car's registration, (if the owner is
a stranger) this can be done
through the Ontario Motor Vehi-
cle Registration Branch, Parlia-
ment Buildings, Toronto.
This will enable you to find out
if the automobile is a "one
owner", or how many times it has
changed hands. Before a used
automobile can be legally driven
in Ontario, it must carry a cer-
tificate of Mechanical Fitness
from a certified mechanic, (Make
sure he is the owner or licensed
employee of a dealer or repair
garage.)

I plan on being married in
September and am wonder-
ing if this will affect my credit
stcitus in any way.
Yes. Your ability to obtain
credit can be affected, but credit
granters should not let one
spouse's poor status have any
greater influence on the other's
ability to obtain credit than if the
situation were reversed.
When you and your husband
make a major purchase from
joint income, lenders will com-
bine your credit histories and con-
sider you as a unit. In this situa-
tion, one spouse's poor credit
history can lessen the value of the
other's good one.
You can still obtain credit in
your own name and accept
responsibility for all debts you
contract. If you rely on your
husband's income, however,
lenders will often request that
your husband co-sign any credit
forms, because even if you have
your own income and an es-
tablished credit history, your
husband's signature may be re-
quired for a major credit transac-
tion.
I mailed in $1 to P.O. Box
19000 in Toronto's Terminal
A Post Office with a filled out
coupon. This was to make me
a member of The Super
Samples Club, which was
supposed to mail me out,
from time to time, new
product samples at no
charge.
I have heard nothing since,
and that was, last February!
Our reader will be glad to hear
that The Super Samples Club is a
quite legitimate unit of Dyment
Ltd., a Toronto based firm hired
to package and mail samples for
bona fide media sampling firms.
However it. seems that the box
number 19000 is no longer in use,
and is now changed to, P.O. Box
1767, Station R, Toronto.
We have been assured that out
reader's name has now been add-
ed to their current mailing list,
and she will be receiving various
free samples from now on.
