"It's simply the best hockey
school in Ontario,"
That's the evaluation given to
the Huron Hockey School by
Toronto Life Magazine after
observing the operations of all
such schools in the province,
Brian Gilmour who heads the
instructional staff at the Huron
Park arena based school told the
T-A Tuesday, "It was a long
climb to the top, but, we finally
made it,"
Gilmour said he and his staff
which includes college hockey
coaches Ron Mason and Bill
Mahoney are planning expansion
for this summer's operation,
In addition to the four weeks at
the Huron Park arena from July
31 to August 27, similar in-
struction will be given at the
Ilderton arena during the same
period.
The registration response to
the 1977 school is "fantastic
according to Gilmour. He added,
"We have already accepted 304
registrations for this summer.
Last year at the same time the
figure stood at 90. We can handle
a maximum of 900."
A number of professional
hockey teams will be sending
players to Huron Park again this
year for the fourth consecutive
time. These players are not here
to coach but to gain coaching help
in specialized aspects of their
game.
Doug Riseborough of the
Montreal Canadiens who is
proving to be one of the most
improved players in the NHL this
year spent two week sessions at
the Huron School during 1975 and
1976.
Also in attendance last year
was Dave "Tiger" Williams of
the Toronto Maple Leafs,
Williams assessment of the
school is "nothing less than
great."
Teams already committed to
sending some of their performers
this summer are the Canadiens,
Bruins, Rangers and Cincinatti
Stingers.
Also planning on coming here
for a week are four of the Quebec
Major Junior all-star team.
These include Jean Savard of
Quebec City and Robert Picard,
the top player in Quebec.
Gilmour said he was hoping to
include an old timers hockey
tournament as part of the last
week of the school. An event of
this kind could attract as many
as 20 teams.
He continued, "It would be nice
to have old timer teams from
Exeter and Ilderton act as the
host clubs in the two district
arenas. We would include
programs for the wives."
Most of Huron's coaching staff
hold phys-ed MAs or PhDs, but
have solid hockey backgrounds;
they have developed a program
utilizing bio-mechanical
analysis, European conditioning
methods and video tape.
Boys are on the ice twice daily
with three hours of hockey and
one-and-a-half hours of skating
instruction. (Coaches even study
the marks kids' skate blades
leave on the ice.) Boys also have
daily off-ice training sessions.
Goalies get an extra hour of ice
time daily plus their own off-ice
drills (61 are used). Four coaches
plus one counsellor are on the ice
with the kids and the same
coaches remain with their
students on ice during the whole
week.
Unstructured camp activities
include bowling, swimming, field
games, barbecues and at least
one visit to Grand Bend,

Continental reputation rises Spring Sale The performance of the
Woodstock Royals in the first
four games of the Ontario Allan
Cup playoff has given the OHA
Continental Senior league a real
boost.
The Woodstock club came up
with a resounding 11-4 win over
the Brantford Alexanders Sunday
to even their series at two games
a piece.
This is the third year that the
Continental winners have moved
on in playoff contention against
Senior A teams and Woodstock is
the first team to get a victory.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets were
eliminated four straight games in
the first two tries by the Barrie
Flyers.
In a telephone interview with
the T-A, Monday Don Urbshott of
the Jets commented, "The
showing by Woodstock in winning
two games certainly gives our
league a lot of creditability."
He continued, "It says a lot for
the way we operate our league
with-all teams operating' "oh a
share the wealth basis with their
players."
Urbshott conceded that
"Brantford will likely eliminate
Woodstock if they play hard and
pull together, they certainly have
the more experienced players."
Brantford in the Senior "A"
league this year after a one year
leave of absence has brought
players from all over Canada and
the United States in an attempt to
win the Allan Cup.
Urbshott said Brantford
sponsor Dr. Karl has made no
bones about wanting to win the all
Canadian senior championship.
During the winter when several
of his players were injured Dr.
Karl ran a newspaper ad-
vertisement which said, "Come
with us and win the Allan Cup."
While Urbshott said he felt
Brantford would go on to
eliminate the Royals and meet
the Maritimes winner they had a
difficult chore. He continued,
"It's difficult to bring players
from all over and mould them

into a winner in one year."
The minimum salary on the
Brantford team is $0 per player
per game. Urbshott said that
Barrie lost about $80,000 last year
in the Allan Cup attempt and he
expected the Brantford loss this
year would likely be higher.
He estimated the total budget
for the 1976-77 campaign for his
Lucan-Ilderton Jets at about
$17,000.
