The Exeter claybird gun club is giving area youngsters a chance to show their angling skills during an upcoming fishing derby. The derby will be held at Morrison. Dam on Saturday, April 30 and any youngsters 14 years of age or under are eligible to compete. Registration will begin at 6 a.m. and continue until nine in the morning. A registration fee of 25 cents will be charg- ed. Prizes in a number of categories will be presented at four in the afternoon. The club is also holding a trophy shoot at the club grounds in Hay township, just north of the Exeter Cemetery on Saturday, May 7. The same night a dance is being held at the Dashwood Community Centre with "The Southern Com- fort" providing the music. The club executive is to be congratulated in their ef- forts to provide good shooting, sportsmanship and conser- vation. They are presently trying to set up programs to raise pheasants in the surrounding townships. The next regular meeting of the club at South Huron District High School on May 9 is expected to include a speaker from the Canadian Wildlife Service. Lots of soccer The response to the minor soccer registration sessions in Exeter and Lucan Saturday were very encouraging. Anyone wishing to join up in either program will have another chance this Saturday morning again. In Exeter the sign-up location is room 116 at SHDHS and in Lucan it's at the fire hall. While on the subject of soccer, Dave Silcock passes on the information that he will be coaching a minor team in the Sarnia operated Southwestern Ontario pee wee soccer League. The home games of the area team will be played in Grand Bend and the team will act as a base for a Huron- Lambton County all star team which will be formed later in the season for North American competition. Any boys between the ages of 11 and 15 who are in- terested in playing top competitive minor soccer are asked to contact Ed Mommersteeg at 238-2797 or Dave Silcock at 235-2193. High school sports week Next week is to be celebrated as High School Sports Week across Canada and athletes from South Huron District High School will be participating. About 20 students from South Huron will be taking part in a Cross Canada run. Doug Ellison of the local school tells us most secondary schools across our country will be part of the run which will carry a baton -from the west to east coast. Member schools in WOSSA are responsible for carrying the baton from Sarnia to Kitchener. The Western Ontario run will begin Monday morning in Sarnia and head up through Parkhill to Elginfield where the South Huron runners will take over and carry on to St. Marys. The Sarnia to Ottawa portion of the run should be completed by the end of the week. Students will be obtaining pledges and these monies will be used for local high school sporting activities. Mayors of some municipalities will be on hand to read high school week sports proclamation in their areas. Golfers raring to go Spring should be officially proclaimed this weekend by many sportsmen and women in this area, Both local golf courses are expected to be open and we know several enthusiastic duffers who have been frothing at the bit for the ground to dry up. They have been consoled to date by watching the pros in action on most weekends on television and watching how easy it is to get out of the rough or a bunker. Seems to us it may be a little easier to watch than actually pull off some of those shots which fellows like Jack Nicklaus seem to thrive on. Nicklaus continues to amaze his championship perfor- mances. It takes great determination and concentration to come back from finishing second in one tourney to win the next week. Hockey school gaining in popularity , The Huron Hockey School which operates each summer out of the Huron Park arena has been evaluated by a Toron- to based magazine as "simply the best hockey school in On- tario." Another article elsewhere on these pages will tell more about the school and increased plans for this summer. The Huron Hockey School started slowly but has been increasing each year under the control of dedicated hockey men and/ teachers like Brian Gilmour, Bill Mahoney and Ron Mason. These three fellows were in at the beginning and are still heading up the strong instructional program, While enrollment by youngsters is necessary for the success of any school, the repeated use of its facilities by professional hockey teams has certainly helped the image of the Huron Hockey School. Doug Riseborough of the Montreal Canadiens who is considered by many to be the most improved this year in the NHL spent two weeks during the last two summers at Huron Park. Also in last year was Dave "Tiger" Williams of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Williams' assessment of the school was, "It is nothing less than great." Perfect gun club score Janice Frayne would like to use of the courts and the chance thank the Recreation Committee , to promote tennis in the Exeter and Town Council for allowing area. It is believed to be the first loss suffered by the Siskins in their arena this year. The Hawks hardly knew what to expect in Stayner as their league cohorts from Tavistock had suffered two severe drubbings in the northern community. However, coach Ron Bogart indicated the Hawks may have felt at home in the Stayner facility. "It was just like walking into our old Exeter rink, only theirs is in worse shape," he commented. When asked for a prediction on the series, Bogart said he could do no better than quote Stayner coach Paul Carruthers during their conversation following Monday's win. Carruthers said if the Hawks continue to play as they have in the first two games, they should wrap the series up in four straight, Bogart said the Stayner coach indicated he was having a tough time keeping his team up for the finals in view of the fact they have been involved in them for the past four years. They won the title on two of those occasions. However, Bogart discounted that to a certain extent and said The Exeter Tennis Club Executive would like to extend a warm welcome to the citizens of the area to a Tennis-Open House at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 4 in the Exeter Public School Library. People of all ages, interested in tennis, are invited to a relaxing evening of Tennis instruction, a film presentation, registration and refreshments, A special hello to the 1976 E.T.C. members and in lieu of their wash-out year we offer this year free membership to the equivalent of last years membership. If a fifth game is necessary it will be back in Zurich on Sunday, The sixth game is in Stayner on Monday and the seventh would be in Zurich on Wednesday. All Zurich games are at 8:00 p.m, Come from behind Monday night's win in Stayner was accomplished with another of the Hawks patented come- from-behind performances after they fell behind by a 3-0 margin in the first period. However, three straight power play goals evened the count and Brian Taylor fired the winner in the final two minutes of the middle session, The Hawks added two in- surance tallies in the third period, the final one into an open net. Meanwhile, Randy Lovie was performing his stellar play at the other end of the rink and blanked the Siskins over the final 44 minutes of the game. Ken Pinder started the Hawks scoring with five minutes left in the first period when he teamed up with Fred Mommersteeg and Tom Hayter on their first power play attempt. Steve Jennison, moved up to centre to replace the injured Rick Ingram, scored in the first minute of the second period on another power play after taking a pass from Phil Knight. Knight then evened the score at 3-3 after seven minutes of play with a solo dash down the ice while Exeter again enjoyed a man advantage. Taylor's winning tally came at the 18:46 mark as he finished off a play with Jennison, The teams battled on scoreless terms throughout most of the third period, before Taylor scored a clincher on an unassisted effort with four minutes remaining. Stayner lifted their goalie for an extra attacker and after Matt Muller bounced a shot off the post and the play went back into the Exeter end, defenceman Jim Ferguson scooped up the puck and skated to centre ice and then fired it into the open net. Don McKellar and Knight picked up assists. The Hawks out-shot Stayner by a 38-36 margin. "We were slow getting started as usual," commented Bogart, noting that the Hawks had not had a full warm-up. They were on the ice for only five minutes when the flooding machine was brought out. They had expected to be allowed to stay on until about 15 minutes before game time, but were shunted off a half hour earlier than that, Win going away In Sunday's opener played before 70Q fans at the Zurich arena, the Hawks continued to receive some stellar net minding from Randy Lovie that enabled them to keep a slim lead until they displayed their devastating — Please turn to Page II ANOTHER ONE — Brian Taylor has scored five goals against Stayner and he's caught in action on one of those occasions, Sunday.
