Exeter cops Shamrock pee wee title
The Exeter pee wees ended
their season on a winning note,
Monday, as they nipped Lambeth
9-3 in Huron Park to win the
Shamrock "A" championship.
Each member of the team was
presented with a gold Shamrock
medallion following the tilt, The
title was the third recorded by the
local squad this year as they had
previously won the Legion zone
and district championships.
Lambeth needed only one tie
with Exeter to win the title and
they came close in both games of
the home-and-home affair.
Exeter won the first game in
Lambeth when they scored with
just 37 seconds left on the clock
and Monday night they notched
the winner with just over three
minutes remaining.
Monday's contest was a nip and
tuck affair right from the opening
whistle as Lambeth came up with
goals to tie the game on three
occasions,
Dave Underwood put Exeter on
the sheet in the first period when
he broke in alone to find an open
corner and then Lambeth tied it
up in the second only to have Bill
Glover finish off a play with Mike
Murray to give Exeter a 2-1
margin.
After Lambeth scored on a
power play, Dave Shaw gave
Exeter another one-goal margin
in the third when he worked h is
way through the defence to blast
a shot into the net.
Lambeth came right back and
their fans thought they had the tie
that would have given them the
title, but in the final minutes
Mike Clark banged in a rebound
on a play assisted by Glover and
Mark Vandergunst.
That goal came just seconds
after Exeter goalie Peter
Dearing had stopped a
breakaway. He turned aside
several hard shots to record the
win.
In the opening game in Lam-
beth, the home crew took a 1-0
lead in the first, but Exeter came
back with two straight tallies by
Bill Glover and Mike Clark to
take a 2-1 margin,
That lasted only until the final
minute of the first period when
Lambeth again knotted the count.
The teams battled on even
terms throughout the second and
most of the third until Dave Shaw
was fed a pass by Dave Under-

FLOCK TOGETHER
The saying, "Birds of a feather
flock together" came true
Friday night on the farm of Gary
Stevens, near Thorndale,
Near midnight Stevens saw a
vehicle stop near where he kept a
flock of geese. Fearing that some
one was trying to steal some of
his geese, Stevens went to in-
vestigate and was surprised to
find his flock was increased by
two.
The visitors were not geese, but
a pair of muted swans. The birds
the property of the town of St.
Marys were returned to their
proper home.
