For the last number of years, car• makers have been struggling unsuccessfully with a huge problem, how to produce a car that is right for these changed limes as well as for the changing times ahead. A car that effortlessly combines economy, room, performance and safely. It was beginning to look like an impos- sible chore. Until now. Until the Volkswagen Rabbit. The car that does the impossible. We spent five years planning and creating it. Fresh, from the ground up. Its engine is a gem of ingenuity and function, Transversely mounted, this 16 litre, over- head cam, Theysaid it couldn't be fuel iniected powerplant, delivers 45.2 miles per gallon on the highway and 30 miles per gallon in the city'. Yet remarkably, it con also propel you from 0 to 50 miles an hour un on astonishing 77 seconds. IA combination unmatched in the world.) The engine along with the transmission is mounlod up front, • over the drive wheels to give you the superior road-hugging advantages of front- wheel drive. Its rack-and-pinion steering gives you instant and obedient steering response. Its unique "independent stabilizer rear axle" makes the car more stable on rough roads. Smoother riding on ordinary roads. Safety? The Rabbit has front disc brakes and a dual diagonal brake circuit. (If one circuit fails, a second is still there). A double jointed steering column breaks aside in the event of an impact, The Rabbit also boasts negative steering roll radius. (It assists the driver in maintaining directional control under conditions which contribute to skidding.) There's a specially designed "unitized safety cell body". Even reinforced steel beams in the doors. - When it comes to room, a staggering 87% of the car is sheer passenger and cargo space. Besides seating four adults comfort- ably, the Rabbit with its rear seat folded down has more luggage space than a Cadillac Fleetwood. And with five doors, there are enough ins and outs for everyone. Stop by your nearest Volkswagen dealership and put a \blkswagen Rabbit to the test. When you're done, we know there'll be one less person who said it couldn't be done There's no comparison.
