The finished products have to be seen to be appreciated and it is obvious the work that goes into anything produced is very painstaking and well done. The employees care. However the wood working department is not the only busy place at ARC. Debbie Patterson heads the office program offered • at ARC including typing, collating, stuffing, stamping and mailing. Meals for the "staff members and some of the employees are provided by Paula Vink and her kitchen and domestic employees. In yet another aspect of the business, Margaret Wright and her contractural employees take care of the painting, assembling and packaging of items produced in the centre. Margaret Merner teaches at the centre four days a week and the employees learn reading, writing, basic mathematics, dealing with money and change and measuring. Staff members are helped by volunteer workers from surrounding communities. Mrs. Patterson of Clinton volunteers her time in the crafts room teaching ceramics to employees. The result is a large selection of ceramic ware to choose from and you may take a look at their displays around the building and order any piece you choose. Diversification seems to be the key to ARC Industries success. This diversification continues all the time. The wood-working shop has contracts with local camp- sites for signs, with fishermen in local ports for shipping crates, with survey companies for survey stakes, with parks for THAT'S A LOT OF SANDING — Working from a wheelchair doesn't stop Stan Pickering of Dashwood from doing an excellent job of san- ding down picnic tables put together by other employees of ARC In- dustries in Dashwood. photo by McKinley RAVELLE'S GIFTS Going Out of Business S ALE 3 DAYS - APRIL 1, 2, 3 Most Items '/2 Price 55 Main St. Grand Bend Mr. & Mrs. Ross Taylor have returned home after spending the winter in Florida. The wood-working department of the Adult Rehabilation Centre (ARC) in Dashwood is putting out an impressive variety of goods from wooden signs to children' toys to picnic tables. Not only that, they will tackle anything made out of wood you desire, provided wood-working in- struction Dave Hemingway feels they can handle it. As for your lawn, Seffa Ketelaars' maintenance staff will offer cleaning, lawn cutting, and gardening for local businessmen and residents. The idea is to train the employees in maintenance and janitorial duties and the price is right. Arc Industries has come a long way since 1973 and their managing director Don Campbell `is enthusiastic this growth . will ' ontittuer In 1973' seven local adults worked under the supervision of volunteer staff. Today Mr. Campbell says "there are eight full time instructors and 49 employees. We hope to in- crease the number of employees to 65 by the end of the year." The quality of the work done by those employees is especially evident in the wood and ceramic products they produce. It takes about two hours for the wood- working department to put together a six foot picnic table and they sell them for only $47.95. Mr. Hemingway says "You can get any stain or sealer put on them you want and the tables are signs, and picnic tables in fact there is no end. Now, thanks to a $500 donation made to ARC by the Shipka Community Centre, they will be able to purchase even more wood-working equipment as well as silk-screening equipment and supplies. The diversity continues. Eighty percent of their funds come from government grants with the remaining 20 per cent from donations and the sale of items made by employees. So far four members have graduated from the courses at ARC and are holding responsible jobs in local communities. Visitors are welcome at ARC Industries between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. any day of the week. If you would like to order any of the items the employees offer for sale, you may simply phone in your request, or drop in, take a tour, see what they have to offer. You may be pleasantly surprised at the quality, quantity and price. IT TAKES A LOT OF FISH CRATES — Right now employees of Arc Industries in Dashwood are busy putting together fish shipping crates ordered by fishermen in Grand Bend and Bayfield. Above, Ken Carter, left of Grand Bend and Cam Deline of Exeter assemble the crates in the wood-working department. photo by McKinley .14J0100000111111010111100001100010110101111101110101011111110101101111000001011100100111111010101001111011000110111110101110110110110111111111101010111011101001110010110000000011010001011111111011111111111112 a F. = Mrs. Watkins invitesyou to visit her ...--..... - .-....
