Adding to their under-dog condition was the fact they had only nine players and most teams expected to skate them into the ice. In the opening tilt against the WOAA Champion Walkerton crew, the waxers dropped a 4-2 decision and were in the contest until mid-way through the third period when the winners scored the clincher. As it turned out, Exeter gave the eventual tournament "B" Champions their hardest game as Walkerton went on to post decisive wins against their other competitors, Terry Zachar scored Exeter's first goal in that contest on a pass from Steve McIntyre and then Brett Batten scored an unassisted marker near the end of the second period on a solo dash to narrow the Walkerton lead to 3-2, However, the champs scored again in the third period to open a gap the locals could not close, Win two That put Exeter into the con- solation side of the tournament and they returned to the ice on Saturday afternoon to post a decisive 4-1 margin over Listowel and then copped the silverware with a thrilling 2-0 win over Goderich in the final on Sunday afternoon, Brett Batten paced the team to their win over Listowel as he scored a pair of tallies and fed two perfect passes to Todd Lewis in front of theLis towel net and the latter made no mistake as he calmly whipped the two shots into the oppen• corner. Batten's first goal was assisted by Sean Whiteford and his second was a solo effort. Jim Lewis played a steady game between the pipes and was robbed of his shutout when Listowel scored with less than a minute remaining in the contest, Sean Whiteford and Terry Zachar gave him plenty of help as they continually stopped Listowel at the blueline. In Sunday's contest against Goderich, the Waxers were still the underdogs, having lost two exhibition contests earlier in the season against the county town crew by fairly decisive margins, However, the locals came out hustling and took a 1-0 lead early in the first period on a play that worked well for them throughout the tournament. Sean Whiteford stopped a Goderich attack at centre ice and fired the puck back into their end, Brett Batten beat the Goderich defenders to the puck and again found Todd Lewis out in front and the latter found the range with a shot to the open corner, The teams then battled on scoreless terms until the start of the final period when Brett Batten again raced in to pick up a Sean Whiteford clearing shot. Batten picked the puck up along the boards and skated around the net and whipped it into the net before the Goderich netminder could cover the corner. Jim Lewis stopped several shots, particularly in the final minutes of the third period, to post his shutout, Sean Whiteford and Terry Zachar again played strong defensive roles while the Exeter forwards continually beat Goderich to the puck. It was the first time in several years that an Exeter team had won' any silverware at the Listowel event. Last year's entry were beaten in the championship final.
