Deciding game in Listowel, tonight
Midgets regain form to knot series
Times-Advocate,. March 31, 1977 Page 19
•
The Exeter Kinsmen midgets,
with their backs to the wall due to
two sub-par performances,
regained their form this week to
even their best-of-five series with
Listowel.
Listowel out-hustled the locals
to post wins of 7-4 and 4-2 in the
first two games, but Exeter
fought off elimination with an 8-4
verdict in Listowel on Saturday
and then returned to Huron Park
to score a 5-1 triumph, Monday.
That sets the stage for the
deciding game tonight (Thur-
sday) in Listowel at 7 :00 p.m. and
the winner will advance to the
OMHA final against Alliston.
In Monday night's game, the
Exeter crew moved to the attack
from the opening face-off and
scored two goals in less than
two minutes to take a lead they
never relinquished.
Randy Parsons, who had been
a doubtful starter due to illness,
started the team off on the right
foot when he found the range on a
play with linemates Dave Bogart
and Paul Pooley. Ron Bilcke
helped set up the play when he
stopped the puck at the Listowel
blueline and fired it back to his
forwards,
At the 1:50 mark, Exeter
scored what turned out to be the
winner when Brian Mercer
finished off a power play with the
Pooley twins. The three kept the
puck in the Listowel end on some
nifty passing and Mercer finally
got the scoring chance when he
skated out from behind the net to
hit an open corner.
Although Exeter continued to
control the play, they ran into
penalty trouble mid-way through
the period and with two men
sitting out infractions, Listowel
reduced the lead to 2-1.
Shortly after, Exeter again had
two men in the penalty box, but
this time they managed to hold
off the Listowel attack.
Near the end of the period, Ron
Bilcke again stopped the puck at
the Blueline and deumped it into
the corner for Perry Pooley. The
latter spotted Preston Dearing
moving into the slot and his pass
was quickly whipped into the net
by Dearing.
In the second period, Exeter
scored the only goal when they
were playing a man short. Paul
Pooley moved in on a lone
defender and his attempt was
blocked, but brother Perry
dashed in behind him to grab
the loose puck and send a
blistering slap shot into the net
from about 25 feet out.
The lone goal of the final
session came off an Exeter power
play with Perry Pooley finding
the range to finish off a play with
Brad Taylor and Ron Bilcke.
Exeter picked up 11 of the 17
penalties called in the tilt, They
handed out several stiff body
checks in the contest to keep
Listowel players off the puck,
Regain form
Exeter posted a decisive 8-4
margin on Lis towel's ice,
Saturday.
They dominated play
throughout most of the contest
and won it going away with three
goals in the last 10 minutes of the
third period.
Exeter gave their supporters
ample evidence that they were
"up" for the contest when they
jumped to the attack right off the
opening whistle.
Randy Parsons put them on the
scoreboard early on a play with
Dave Bogart and after Listowel
knotted the count mid-way
through the period, Randy Fisher
gave Exeter a 2-1 lead when he
took a pass from Dennis
Preszcator to blink the light with
One of the interested spectators
at Saturday's midget game in
Listowel was former Ausable
Conservation Authority fieldman
Terry McCauley.
He now lives in Alliston and the
winner of the Listowel-Exeter
series will face Alliston in the
OMHA finals.
One of Terry's twin sons,
two Lis towel players in the
penalty box.
Fisher, who played a spec-
tacular game, upped the lead to 3-
1 in the second frame when he
raced into the corner to get the
puck and skated out in front to
push a shot into the open corner,
Listowel then caught fire and
evened the count, their third goal
coming on a power play, but
Dennis Preszcator put Exeter
back into a 4-3 lead when he was
although still of bantam age, is
playing on the Alliston midget
squad.
He advised Exeter fans he
hoped the local Kinsmen midgets
could win the series against
Listowel as he was looking for-
ward to a series between his
present and former home towns.
set up at the point by Preston
Dearing.
The middle frame ended with
four Exeter players in the
penalty box for the final minutes
to only two for Listowel, but the
locals escaped on some fine
penalty killing.
Fisher opened the scoring in
the final session with his third
goal of the night when he again
raced into the corner and came
out front to push the puck in
behind a maze of Listowel
players.
Listowel narrowed the count to
5-4 when they scored on a power
play half way through the period,
but then Exeter put the game out
of reach when Brad Taylor
scored on a power play and his
tally was followed by an
unassisted effort by Paul Pooley
and another tally off the stick of
Taylor with assists going to
Dennis Preszcator and Dave
Bogart,
Still Listless
The Listowel crew pushed the
Kinsmen midgets to the wall
when they scored their second
straight series win with a 4-2
margin in Huron Park, Friday.
Exeter were still off form in
this contest and were continually
beaten to the puck in both ends of
the rink.
The visitors jumped into a 3-0
lead before Exeter finally
managed to hit the scoreboard
late in the second period on a goal
by Paul Pooley with Perry
Pooley drawing the assist.
Paul Pooley came back with
his second of the night in the final
period with Brian Mercer
drawing the assist on the power
play, but Listowel then countered
on their own power play in less
than a minute to take their 4-2
lead.
Exeter's. hopes for a final rally
were dashed when they drew two
penalties in the final three
minutes.

TWO HANDER — Exeter midget star Perry Pooley got nothing on this play except a sore backside, His
drive was stopped by the Listowel goalie and the defenceman moving in behind is shown in the midst of his
two-handed slash which caught Pooley in the back. He earned a rest in the penalty box, while Pooley had to
take a rest in the players' box to shake off the foul blow. T-A photo

THAT'S THE WAY IT IS — This picture amply expresses the joys of winning and the agony of defeat. Brad
