Exeter wins battle of the Hawks in sixth game
"I didn't mention it to anyone,
but I knew we would do it in six
games," commented coach Ron
Bogart during the post game
celebrations in the Exeter Hawks
dressing room Tuesday.
That earned him a round of
guffaws from his players as they
sat wiping the sweat from their
bodies after a hard-fought 6-5
overtime win over their
namesakes from Mitchell that
sent them into the OHA junior
"D" semi-final against
Wellington.
The win ended a series in which
predictions of victories were
safely made only after the games
and certainly only after the final
buzzer had sounded.
Both teams displayed the
ability to keep coming back from
deficits, although in the final
game it was a case of Exeter
appearing to have just that extra
determination needed to win
championships.
They bombarded Mitchell's
Bob Ward with 62 shots in the 70-
minute hockey game. It was the
cleanest game of the series as
both squads Stuck strictly to
hockey and ended up with only 10
minutes in penalties in total as
neither dared to allow the other
an extra attacker,
The winning goal came at the
1:05 mark of the overtime session
when captain Phil Knight just
managed to stop the puck a
fraction of an inch from going out
of the Mitchell end and he fired a
blazing slap shot towards the net
and into a maze of players. Fred
Mommersteeg managed to get
his stick on the shot and deflect it
into the corner.
Mitchell started the game
scoring in the first period, despite
being out-shot by an 18-7 margin.
Exeter knotted the count at the
34 second mark of the second
when Noel Skinner flipped the
puck to Kim McKinnon and he,
and Don McKeller raced in on one
defender. McKinnon pulled the
defender to his side and then fed a
pass to McKinnon who skated in
alone to beat Ward.
Mitchell opened a 2-1 margin
four minutes later, but again
Exeter came right back and in 19
seconds had the equalizer when
John VanGerwen picked up his
own rebound to flip it into the
cage. Jim Ferguson started the
play at the blueline with a pass
into the corner for Ken Pinder
and he fed it into the slot to
VanGerwen.
Exeter's most glaring error of
the night allowed Mitchell to
move ahead 3-2 near the mid-way
mark. While setting up a power
play in their own end, the Hawks
allowed Mitchell to pick up the
puck and captain Bob Skinner
found Randy Raycraft beside the
net and he whipped the puck past
Randy Lovie.
Lovie was obviously miffed at
the play and considered taking
himself out of the game, but was
talked out of that by his coach
and team mates.
That may have been the
pyschological lift the Hawks
needed as they scored twice in
the last three minutes to take
their first lead in the game.
Ken Pinder notched the first on
a brilliant move at the net after
taking a pass from Fred Mom-
mersteeg, Pinder shifted to in-
dicate he was going around
behind the net, but at the last
, instant moved the puck back in
front and slipped it into the
corner.
Then Brian Taylor, Rick
Ingram and Gerald Weido came
up with another top effort at the
19:14 mark for the go-ahead tally.
Ingram beat two Mitchell
players for the puck in the corner
and slipped it to Weido behind the
net. Weido came around the
corner and found Taylor alone in
front and the latter made no
mistake on a quick wrist shot into
the open corner to make it 4-3.
Exeter had 21 shots in the
middle period to eight by the
home side.
Mitchell knotted the count at
the 4:04 mark of the final period
on a disputed goal. The puck was
pushed into the cage just as the
whistle blew, but the referees
ruled that it had entered in time
to be allowed.
The hosts just failed to take the
lead a few minutes later when
Mike Avery was in alone and
Lovie robbed him with a brilliant
stick save while he was down on
the ice.
Exeter opened a 5-4 lead at the
13:34 mark when Ken Pinder dng
the puck out of the Mitchell
corner and fed it back to Jim
The Exeter Hawks will
now meet Wellington in the
OHA junior "D" semi-final
series following their win
over the Mitchell Hawks.
That series has been ten-
tatively set to open in
Zurich this Friday night at
8:00 p.m. with the return
game in Wellington at 3:00
p.m., Sunday.
However, Hawks
management were still
attempting to have that
changed as they have in-
dicated they would prefer
to play two games in either
town in the first weekend
and return to the other for
Ferguson at the point. The lat-
ter's backhander was blocked,
but John VanGerwen picked up
the rebound and fired it home.
They appeared to be heading
for the win, but Mitchell chalked
up the equalizer when Dennis
"Igor" Fischer blasted a shot
into Lovie that knocked the
netminder off balance and into
the net with the puck at 17:27.
two more games the
following weekend.
They explain that the
cost of transportation
makes it very expensive to
go back and forth for only
one game at a time, plus
the amount of timein-
volved in travelling.
The OHA has been asked
to assist them in changing
the present schedule, but no
word had been received
from Toronto at press time,
When the schedule is ap-
proved, it will be provided
for the London Free Press so
area hockey fans can be ad-
vised,
The regular play ended with
Exeter leading in shots by a 54-29
margin.
Exeter continued to dominate
play in the extra 10 minutes, out-
shooting Mitchell by an 8-5
margin and Randy Lovie played
his steadiest hockey of the game
in the extra session to preserve
the one-goal margin,
Both coaches visited the op-
posing dressing rooms after the
game. Bob Zimmer even came
bearing a gift for Exeter "to
prove I'm not all bad".
Ron Bogart told the Mitchell
players he didn't expect the
Hawks would meet any tougher
team than they in the balance of
the playoff trail,
Cliff hanger
Sunday night's battle in Zurich
was a real cliff hanger and
Mitchell enjoyed a two-man
advantage in the final two
minutes as they stormed to the
attack and justfailedtoovercome
the 3-2 Exeter margin.
In the final minute, coach Bob
Zimmer lifted goalie Bob Ward in
favor of yet another attacker,
giving them six skaters to
Exeter's three.
However, Randy Lovie
managed to stop all the shots
thrown his way in that hectic
final minute to preserve the
Exeter win and give them the
series lead again,
Mitchell opened the scoring at
the 14:54 mark of the first period
when Ron Elliott found the mark
on a shot to the top corner from
his blueline position,
However, the Mitchell fans
didn't have long to cheer as Don
McKeller knotted the count in
less than a minute when his low
shot went through a maze of legs
into the bottom corner of the
Mitchell net.
Matt Muller gave Exeter a 2-1
margin early in the second on a
play with McKeller and then he
scored his second of the game at
the 17:30 mark on a play with Jim
Ferguson and Don McKeller.
Mitchell scored at the 13:49
mark of the final period to
narrow the gap to one goal and
set the stage for the dramatic
finish,
Rally thwarted
In Friday night's contest at
Mitchell, the Exeter crew just
failed in their efforts to send the
game into overtime and ended up
on the short end of a 6-5 verdict.
Coach Ron Bogart lifted goalie
Laurie Skinner in favor of an
extra attacker in the final
minute, and with the team
already having a man advantage
due to penalties, they peppered
several hard shots at the Mitchell
net but were just wide on a couple
and Dave Holmes managed to
snare the other.
The local Hawks had been
behind throughout most of the
contest and were trailing 6-3 With
only four minutes remaining,
Ken Pinder narrowed the count
to two goals when he converted a
pass from John Van Gerwen and
Phil Knight the pulled them to
within one goal when he took a
pass from Noel Skinner in his own
end and raced the length of the
ice to push the puck behind
Holmes as he was tripped going
in on the net.
That goal came at the 18:38
mark and Exeter continued to
press for the next minute and a
half but couldn't come up with the
equalizer,
Fred Mommersteeg, Matt
Muller and Noel Skinner fired
Exeter's other three goals with
assists on those going to Dave
Kinsman, Ken Pinder, Phil
Knight, Kim McKinnon, Rick
Ingram and Brian Taylor.
Mitchell had broken a 3-3 tie in
the third period when they scored
on a power play near the mid-way
mark and then added two more in
the next three minutes, the
eventual winner coming when
captain Bob Skinner broke
through on a breakaway to beat
Laurie Skinner,
It was Skinner's first contest
since league play and he played a
steady game between the pipes in
place of Randy Lovie who was
nursing a sore foot.

WINNING GOAL - Mitchell captain Bob Skinner moves in on a
breakaway to score the winning goal in Friday's contest in Mitchell. He
swooped around Laurie Skinner to tuck the puck in the net. Chasing
him are Jim Ferguson and Gerald Weido, while Phil Knight moves back
into the play after taking a Mitchell player out along the boards in
front of the Exeter net. T-A photo
HUGS ALL AROUND - The Exeter Hawks line of Fred Mommersteeg,
John VanGerwen, Ken Pinder, Phil Knight and Jim Ferguson show their
emotions after scoring the winning goal in overtime, Tuesdciy, to
eliminate Mitchell. The Mitchellplayers fail to share their enthusiasm as
goalie Bob Ward digs the puck out of the net.

GOOD SPORTS THIS TIME - Mitchell and Exeter Hawks line up for the customary hand shakes after
Tuesday's final series game in Mitchell. Coach Bob Zimmer is shown at the end of the Mitchell line. In the
opening tilt, Mitchell refused to shake hands with the Exeter crew. Despite a hard-hitting series, Tuesday's
game was well played with only five penalties and no signs of animosity. T-A photo
SHAKES HANDS THIS TIME - Mitchell coach Bob Zimmer was one
of the first people into the Exeter dressing room after the local Hawks
ousted his on Tuesday. He even brought the Hawks some refreshments
and congratulated coach Ron Bogart and the team. In the series
opener, Zimmer and his team had refused to shake hands and he had
even become involved in an altercation when he pushed an Exeter of-
ficial. He said he just wanted to show Exeter he wasn't all bad when he
visited them this week. T-A photo
