SUMMERS GRANTON Mrs. Austin Hobbs was the hostess for the March meeting of the Granton Women's Institute Tuesday evening, March 15. Mrs. Gordon Dann presided and opened the meeting with the Ode, Lord's Prayer, and Mary Stewart Collect. Mrs. Norman Riddell convened the program on the topic Canadian Industries by reading a paper on the progress through the years of the Hartz Mountain Pet Supplies Industry in St. Thomas, who have recently enlarged their warehouse there, Mrs. Riddell also read an article advocating the growing of wild bird seed as a potential crop for farmers. Mrs. Clifford McRobert was in charge of Household Hints, and provided a number of ways to save energy, and concluded the program with a contest which was won by Mrs. James Kerr. Mrs. Don Roloson gave a report on the District Directors Meeting and further arrangements were made concerning the St. Patrick's Day smorgasbord supper and euchre, also plans were discussed regarding the Needlepoint for Beginners Course Summary Day, March 24. Mrs. Hamilton Hodgins, Mrs. Don Roloson, and Mrs. Percy Hodgins were named as • the nominating committee for the 1977 officers. Canvassers for the Canadian Cancer Society were the following members, Mrs. Gordon Dann, Mrs. Clarence Lewis, Mrs. Don Roloson, Miss Mabel McNaughton, Mrs. Cliff McRobert, Mrs. Joseph Pecko and Mrs. Henry Wissel, Captain, Mrs. Elmer Summers. Choices for leaders training school courses were A Festival of Dairy Foods and Creative Stit- chery. The hostess was assisted with serving lunch by Mrs. N. Riddell and Mrs. C. McRobert, The attendance at the St. Patrick's Day smorgasbord supper and euchre sponsored by the Granton W.I. held at the Masonic Hall was a great success as in former years, by the number of people who were present for the supper and later enjoyed progressive euchre. Prize winners were ladies high score, Mrs, Violet O'Brien of Kirkton; lone hands, Mrs. Clif- • ford McRobert; and low score Mrs. Clare Dunlop; for the men, high score, Mrs. Hamilton Hodgins, playing a man's card; lone hands, Laurence Beckett of Woodham and low score; Percy Hodgins, 4-H news The sixth meeting of the "Sweat Shirts" 4-H Club course, "Consider Your Clothes", met at the home of leader Mrs. Michael O'Shea on Tuesday evening, March 15, The meeting opened with the pledge and the minutes were read and adopted, Linda Weber was secretary for this meeting. The roll call was answered by showing a picture of someone dressed in their native costume or an old photo from the family album. Mrs. O'Shea mentioned that the Home Economist from the • Department of Agriculture would like to come to their next meeting, After a discussion on a design for the book covers, Brenda wearing a sweat shirt could be attached to the cover. Plans for the skit for Achievement Day, April 30, were talked about. Mrs. O'Shea handed out pamphlets containing ideas for blouses, the members then divided into two groups. The girls in charge of leader Mrs. Robt, Garrett were shown how to make facings and collars, and the girls in Mrs. O'Shea group discussed clothing and how Clothes effected the times. The next meeting of the "Sweat Shirts" will take place at the By MRS. WILLIAM ROHDE Mr. & Mrs, Howard Cunnington and family attended the funeral of their uncle the late Leonard Bender at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, Kitchener on Saturday. The sympathy of the community is extended to them, Mr. & Mrs. Donald Ballan- tyne, David, Robert and Richard of Thamesford were Sunday guests with Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Ballantyne. Miss Sandra Hern of Zion and Miss Lori Lynn Stewart are visiting this week with Mr. & Mrs. Rick Potter in Sault Ste. Marie. Brad Cann, Murray Stewart and Rob Stewart are on a tour of Jamaica this week. They are among the students from South Huron District High School who went. Mrs. Helen Caswell, Billy, Diane and Robert of London spent Sunday with Mr, & Mrs. Alvin Passmore. Miss Barbara Miller, Guelph By MRS. STAN PRESZCATOR Mr. & Mrs. Stan Preszcator and girls and Mrs, Joe Thornton were Sunday supper guests with Muriel Biernaski and Angela and Jerry Dallier Sarnia. Angela Biernaski returned home to spend a week with her grand- parents. Mrs. Stan Preszcator and Mrs. Joe Thornton visited Monday afternoon with the formers father who is a patient in Seaforth Hospital, Seaforth. Mrs. Lloyd England is a patient in University Hospital, London. We wish her a speedy recovery. spent the weekend and Miss Melanie Veal of Hensali was a guest Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Miller. Grant Hodgert and Jack Hodgert returned home last week after holidaying in Florida, There were 15 people in at- tendance at the Lenten service at Elimville Church, Sunday home of Mrs. Robert Garrett March 29 at 7 p.m. C.G. I.T., Explorer and Cub news Monday evening the cubs and their leaders enjoyed a St. Patrick's Day celebration and were entertained by Michael O'Shea at the piano with a number of Irish songs. The C.G.I.T. cancelled their meeting Thursday evening on account of the Science Fair at Biddulph Central School which was held on the same night. The Explorers could not meet last Monday evening because of water in the United Church Basement. All the youth groups have cancelled their meetings next week because of the school term holiday break. Friendly neighbors A number of members dropped in at the Scout Hall Wednesday afternoon and enjoyed a game of pool upstairs,and crokinole,cards and shuffleboard downstairs. Highlight of the afternoon was the birthday cake and ice cream for lunch honoring Mrs. A. Crockett. Granton Students do well at Science Fair Congratulations to the following students on their achievements at the Biddulph Central School Science Fair Thursday evening, March 17. Seniors, Allan McRobert for his Solar heating display; Robert Brintnell for his irrigation display and Kim Knapman for her project, a dismembered chicken preserved in alcohol and Betty Ann Herbert prize for juniors with . her display on Crystal, Tin, Iron and Steel. Church news At the United Church Rev. Elwood Morden conducted the morning worship and took his sermon from the scripture lesson Matthew 27-47. "My God, My God why hast Thou forsaken me?" and entitled it "The world of doubt" the fourth in the Lenten. Series on the Seven Last Words, The tragedy of the Crucifixion reached its climax with these words said Rev. Morden, Jesus felt himself to be forsaken by God and Man when he uttered these words of doubt, but if He had only known, His Heavenly Father was closer to Him than ever in His life before. In summation the minister said As long as we claim God as our very own we can never be desolate, especially those who find life bewildering. At St. Thomas Anglican Church the service of Holy Communion was observed on Sunday morning the celebrant Was Rev. Mary Mills assisted by Miss Marion Herbert who also read the Epistle of the day Galations Chapt. 4. This being the fourth Sunday in Lenten, also known as Mothering Sunday, Rev. Mills in her sermon drew attention to the spiritual meaning of this and said, Jerusalem is the Mother of us all, she also referred to are return of the Apostles and the miracle of the feeding of the multitude. The April Fool's supper on March 30 which will be held in the Church Hall was announced. Personals Dean and Raymond McRobert, Jerry Egan, Scott Hack and Brad Tomlin all Medway High School students are enjoying a visit to Spain and Morocco on the half term break. This trip is spon- sored by the school. Mrs. Joseph Bryan who is receiving therapy at Victoria Hospital, London, was allowed to visit relatives over the weekend. Mr, & Mrs. Don McRobert, Rosemary and Sherry are visiting Mrs. McRobert's parents Mr. & Mrs. Elmer Harlton, who are spending the winter in Lakeland Florida. Miss Judy Bailey, Lobo, spent the day on Monday visiting with Miss Marion Herbert. The Hobbs and the Egan families were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. & Mrs. Carl Jones and Kim. Get well wishes are extended to Mrs. Wm. Knapman who is a patient in St. Mary's Memorial Hospital. Mr, & Mrs. Elmer Summers attended the funeral in Hamilton of Mrs. Summer's sister, Mrs. John (Clarice) Babbidge of Low Banks, formerly of Hamilton, Congratulations to Glyn Knapman a grade 5 student at Biddulph Central School on achieving a 99 percent on his term's marks.
