Beat Mitchell by 6-1 count
Times-Advocate, March 17, 1977 Page 11
Exeter wins in rough playoff opener
The Exeter Hawks whipped
Mitchell 6-1 in Zurich, Tuesday,
and if the first game of their
playoff series is an indication of
things to follow, it could be a
rough one.
The referees called a total of 40
penalties — including 16 roughing
and four fighting — and they
could easily have called twice
that number had they felt so
inclined.
Mitchell refused to shake hands
with the victors after the contest
and there was a mild skirmish
between Hawks manager Fred
Mommersteeg and Mitchell
coach Bob Zimmer after the

series, out-shooting their

namesakes by a wide margin,
The series swings back td
Mitchell on Saturday night and
the third game will be played in
Zurich at 8:00 p.m,, Sunday.
Two quick goals by Brian
Taylor in the opening minutes of
the second period appeared to
take the steam out of the Mitchell
attack and for the balance of the
game they appeared intent on
trying to intimidate the Exeter
squad.
The Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the
first period when Gerald Weido
Park pee wees
lose two straight
By CAROL GI HGERICH
The Huron Park pee wees lost
two straight games to Dublin this
week in Ontario Minor Hockey
Association "D" playoffs.
Dublin took the opening game
Saturday by a score of 9-2 and
came back Sunday with a 6-1
victory.
Terry Hodgins and Steve
O'Neil scored for Huron Park in
the first game with assists going
to Dennis Johnston and Steve
O'Neil.
Terry Hodgins converted a
pass from Tony Jones for the only
Huron Park score in the second
contest.
In exhibition games this week,
the Huron Park midgets lost 10-0
to London • and the Huron
Parkettes were blanked 6-0 by a
London squad in girls play.
Atoms drop
exhibitions
The Exeter atoms were nipped
3-1 in an exhibition contest in
Seaforth, Tuesday, after suf-
fering a 7-0 drubbing at the hands
of Goderich in a tilt at Huron
Park, Sunday.
In Tuesday night's fray,
Seaforth opened a 2-0 lead before
Exeter finally managed to get on
the score board when Allan Pym
dented the twine.
Seaforth scored again in the
final seconds of the middle stanza
and then held their margin
through the third period.
In Sunday's contest, Goderich
dominated play throughout and
fired a barrage of shots at Dave
Rook and Jim Lewis in the
Exeter net.
Waxers score
lopsided victory ,
The Exeter Waxers scored a
lopsided 10-0 win over Zurich in
an exhibition contest, Thursday.
Brett Batten paced the scoring
attack with four goals and one
assist, while Terry Zachar had a
hat trick and Todd Lewis fired a
pair. The single goal came off
the stick of Sfeve McIntyre.
Sean Whiteford and Trevor
Blue assisted on two goals each
and single assists were recorded
by Steve Pym, Dave Russell and
Brian Quinn,
Jim Lewis had an easy time
recording the ,shutout as he had
only a couple of shots to handle.
Marty Merner was a busy man in
the Zurich nets, and despite
allowing 10 goals, made several
good stops on the Exeter crew.
Atoms square
Hensall series
The Exeter atom 2 evened
their exhibition series with Hen-
sall, Sunday, when they posted a
5-3 win in Huron Park. Hensall
won a week earlier by a 5.4 ver-
dict.
The visitors jumped into a 3-0
lead in Sunday's contest on a pair
of goals by D'Arren Moir and a
single by John O'Brien,
However, Exeter came roar-
ing back with five tallies in the
final 10 minutes of the game to
post the win. Allan Pym started
things off for Exeter with two
goals early in the period and then
Terry Zachar fired the tying tal-
ly,
Steve Gould notched the
winner at the 8:28 mark and add-
ed an insurance tally in the final
minute.
SUZUKI
made a good second effort to dent
the twine on a play with Rick
Ingram and Tom Hayter.
Playing with a man advantage,
Taylor scored at the 1:29 mark of
the second frame on a nifty play
with Weido and Jim Ferguson
and then came right back 25
seconds later to take a perfect
pass from Rick Ingram from
behind the net to up the lead to 3-
0, Paul Brooks also drew an
assist.
Mitchell scored on a power play
at the 2:48 mark and that was all
the scoring for the middle frame,
In the final, Exeter again
jumped quickly to the attack and
Ken Pinder found the mark after
11 seconds on a play with John
VanGerwen and Steve Jennison.
Phil Knight opened the margin
to 5-1 at the 13:55 mark when he
raced downthe sideline and
rfillIKWIN.WATO0f:
One of the teams involved in
this Sunday's charity .match at
Huron Park is having problems
securing the services of a coach
and manager.
It's not that there aren't any
candidates; the fact is there are
too many.
The Exeter Minor Hockey
Association coaches and
managers have been enlisted to
perform in this year's contest
with the CFPL "Team 10"
celebrities and there's a royal
battle going on as to which coach
and manager will have to stay on
the bench and direct the attack.
Actually, no one wants the job.
"Who would really want to be
responsible for coaching a bunch
of people who think they know
more than the coach?" EMHA
president Ron Bogart asked. .
He said they thought of asking
the kids in the minor system to
take turns directing the squad,
but most of the members "get
even" tactics from the kids.
The 20-member squad took a
vote to see whom they felt was
most qualified from among their
ranks, and they had 20 different
names presented, so that didn't
solve the problem.
They decided to have a race
around the ice surface to pick, the
slowest skater, It was a dead heat
as none made it past the first
blueline,
Referee Pat O'Brien was asked
to pick out the member he felt
could yell the loudest, but he
broke into the clear. He was
tripped from behind while taking
the shot, but still managed to get
the puck into the corner past
Dave Holmes.
Rick Ingram displayed some
fancy foot-work on the final
Exeter goal. He carried the puck
away from a Mitchell defender
behind the net and kicked the
puck out to the side where Weido
blasted it home for his second
tally of the night.
There were two fights in the
final period with Don McKeller
and Kim McKinnon matching up
with Mitchell's Murray Elliott
and Bill McCreight. All four were
given majors and McKeller was
also assessed a misconduct as the
aggressor. McKeller ended up
with seven penalties for the night.
Coach Ron Bogart said after
the game he was pleased with his
•-•-.=?IitICN
indicated he always wore ear
plugs and never heard any of
them.
So, the matter will probably
boil down to picking straws!
However, Fred Mommersteeg
may get the post as he is the lone
non-skating member of the outfit.
"We've offered him a new pair of
wooden shoes if he'll take the
job," Bogart announced.
squad's showing, but indicated he
hoped the team would reduce
their penalty total,
He opined that the referees
appeared to call a few cheap
penalties and let some more
serious violations go unpenalized.
The Hawks had an easy time
eliminating Mt, Brydges in the
sixth game of their playoff as
they posted a 12-3 verdict on the
losers' ice, Saturday.
Exeter scored four goals in
each period on the way to their
win and it became evident early
in the contest that Mt. Brydges
had given up any hopes of
stopping the Hawks.
Their main intention appeared
to be in roughing up the Hawks,
but the locals kept their' cool to
stay away from any possible
suspensions with the loop final
coming up.
Ken Pinder paced the Hawks to
their lop-sided win with four
goals and one assist.
Single tallies were registered
by Noel Skinner, Fred Mom-
mersteeg, Rick Ingram, Don
McKeller, Phil Knight, Jim
Ferguson, Gerald Weido and
Matt Muller.

My widowed sister paid
$150.00 for a German
Shepherd pup from a
breeding kennel. After she
had it for about ten days it
became very ill and she took
to to the Vet who performed
an operation costing $110.00
The kennel owher refuses
to pay any part of this bill,
and we'd like to know who
we can report this woman to.
The kennel in question is
not a registered one, but a
reply we received from the
owner of the kennel states
that, "all the pups in this
litter were healthy when
born and sold,"
The kennel owner also
claims that when she phoned
the Vet he told her that the
pup suffered from a grossly
distended stomach, due to,
overfeeding.

I paid $698 for a car (after,
certification) last June. In mid
November the motor conked
out but when I went back to
the dealer to see if there was
any way to get another car
he said it had lasted pretty
good for the money I paid.
I don't agree, do you?
Unfortunately, there is no
such thing as a 'guaranteed
USED car," regardless of
whether it is a late model
automobile or an old one,
and this applies whether the
car was purchased from a
dealer or privately.
There's a well worn
phrase, saying, "When you
buy a used car you're buying
someone else's trouble, This
of course is not always the
case, but unfortunately
often is."
Once you've seen our selection you'll agree
that we're Huron County's number one van
