Good news for the Blue Jays
Canada's newest major league baseball team the
Toronto Blue Jays are going to be in for a good season in
their first start if the prediction of an American psychic can
be believed.
Appearing on CFPL radio with Bill Brady Tuesday
morning, Jay Bell of Phoenix, Arizona said the Blue Jays
would enjoy a year "much better than most people expect."
On the 1978 season for the Blue Jays, Bell offered,
"They will be an absolute smash and will be totally
accepted." Bell is the same person who appeared last fall
with Brady and predicted Jimmy Carter would win the
United States presidential election in November.
The Blue Jays are a sure thing to be a success as far as
spectators are concerned. More than 8,000 season tickets
have already been sold and opening day on April 7 is already
close to a sell-out.
More general admission tickets may be available for
the first game when erection of the outfield fence is com-
pleted.
The pre-season ticket sales far exceed those of many
established clubs and in particular the San Francisco
Giants who at one time appeared to be destined to transfer
to Toronto.
The season ticket sales have already put more than four
million dollars in the Blue Jays treasury and this certainly
should make for a very stable and firm financial position.
Plenty of entertainment
A visit to the Huron Park arena Sunday afternoon at 3
p.m. should ensure area sports fans of an enjoyable hour or
two of entertainment.
While the event is being listed as a hockey game the
prime commodity could be humour. The game will actually
be hockey but the fare offered may be a bit on the funny
side.
Pitted against each other will be Team 10 from CFPL
television and a squad made up of coaches from the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association.
The local club will likely be in for a storm or two during
the afternoon if weather forecasters Judy Savoy and Bill
Hutchings live up to their reputations.
Most of the Channel 10 regulars are expected to be in
the lineup. These include fellows like Jack Burghart, Pete
James, Dan MacDonald, Ted Kostecki, Wayne Rogers and
George Clarke, to name only a few.
Adding a little to the game will be Peaches, the four
footed friend of Pirie Mitchell, host of CFPL's talent hour.
We hope Peaches is a little more awake then she was
during a similar game a year ago. At that time Peaches
slept most of the time in the penalty box.
The EMHA team is loaded with coaching talent
although some of the members may have a little trouble in
putting their theories into practice.
The game is being sponsored by the Exeter Kinsmen
club and all proceeds will go to support minor hockey in Ex-
eter.
Racing popular
Harness horse racing continues to be very popular in
this area and many owners and drivers are enjoying a very
successful season.
One who was very successful as a part-time trainer and
driver has decided to make the racing business a full time
career. He is Jack Darling who gave up his post as manager
of the Clover Farm market at Huron Park. Jack has seven
or eight horses of his own which he trains and also is
available to catch drive for other owners.
Darling was listed last week as the top percentage
driver at Western Fair Raceway with a mark of .465. It was
the first time Jack was able to make the Western ratings
because he was usually having only a couple of drives a
week and didn't qualify.
In the top driving competition Fred Maguire of Ailsa
Craig is second and Jim Wallace of Crediton third.
Other area drivers who are enjoying successful years
include Ken and Andy Hardy, Clarence Young, Neil
McRann, Larry Decaluwe, Jim Rundle, Dennis Morrissey
and others we fail to remember at the moment.
Missille Almahurst owned jointly by Bill Ellerington
and Bob Pooley has won three straight at American tracks
and the feature at Western Raceway Saturday was won by
Able Baron owned by Doug Courtney of Grand Bend.
Able Baron showed well last year as a two year-old and
is staked in many of the top three-year old pacing events
this year. In his young career Able Baron has amassed win-
nings of more than $50,000.
Local gymnastics
While speaking about gymnastics at the show in Toron-
to, one doesn't have to travel that far to see a display of
gymnastics.
The Exeter recreation department will be presenting
their annual gymnastics recital at South Huron District
High School this Saturday night.
The show gets underway at 7 p.m. and everyone of the
youngsters participating in classes each Saturday will have
the opportunity to show their talents to their parents and
friends.
