Mrs. Roy Morton, Riverview
members recalled the group's
beginning in 1938 at their March
meeting.
The first meeting of the
Riverview W. I. was held at the
home of Mrs. Andrew Dorman,
their first president, The meeting
had been organized by Mrs.
George Young of Lucan.
Mrs, Olive Currie, convener of
resolutions, reminded the
Institute members that the first
resolution was from a W. I,
member in Whitby who saw the
need to have bread wrapped for
sale. She drafted a resolution
which in due time became law.
Mrs. Currie challenged that with
30,000 W, I. members behind a
resolution, "many things can be
accomplished." She also
reminisced on farm life which
brought back many memories to
those present.
Fifteen members were present
and responded to the roll call with
mittee this week and tentative
approval was given to proceed
with a fund raising campaign for
the new community centre.
Plans have been drawn un for
suggestions, "Change I would
like to see in our W. I. or in our
community,"
Reports were given on W, I.
plates recently purchased, visit
to Craigholme Nursing Home,
and the recent district meeting at
Parkhill. March 23 will be
Summary Day at Parkhill United
Church for the needle-point
project, and the district annual
will be held May '17 at Parkhill
United Church. Cloverdale W. I„
will host the W. I. for.1977, .
An "In Memorium" Service
was conducted by Mrs. Hilda
Morton for Mrs. Andrew Morton,
a charter member who passed
away recently.
Mrs, John Walker gave the
motto "resolve to see our faults
as we see the faults in others",
and Mrs. Roy Morton gave a
reading "Having a Friendly
Game of Bridge."
Mrs. Olive Currie closed with a
poem "plant your Garden" and
Mrs, Roy Morton entertained the

the projected $300,000 centre to be
located on 16 acres of land on the
Old Flax Mill property within the
village,
The preliminary plans call for
a concrete and steel building
approximately 90' x 120' . The
large main hall, 120' x 50', is
being planned to accommodate a
wide variety of activities in-
cluding volleyball, and basket-
ball, With the aim of keeping it as
versatile as possible, a portable
stage will be included.
Off the main area, a kitchen
will be located with a service
area, A smaller meeting room,
approximately 35' x 38' is
separated from the main hall by
folding doors to it so it may be
wed as a separate entity,or used
to enlarge the size of the main
hall whenever necessary.
A coatroom, janitor's room,
and storage area are included in
the plans. : •
Washrooms will also be set up
with a double usage in that they
can be entered from outside or

from within the building. Thus in
the event that activities are being
held on the grounds outside the
building, the washroom facilities
will be available without the
necessity of opening the entire
building.
Chairman of the steering
committee for the proposed
centre is John Bender with Les
Morley as co-chairman. Beth
Norton is serving as secretary
and Phil Cant as treasurer.
McGillivray township is
represented by Gerald Wright.
Jack Dorman and Don and Marg
McAlpine, East Williams
Township is represented by Ken
Crawford and Henry Twynstra.
For some time there had been
discussion concerning the need
for a community centre in Ailsa
Craig. During the summer of 1976
the Ailsa Craig Business
Association decided to find ways
to make the idea a reality.
Approval was received from the
Ailsa Craig Village council, and
the steering committee was
formed consisting of ap-
proximately 30 persons from the
different organizations with in
the village. The committee has
been meeting regularly since that
point and the preliminary plans
were prepared by Frank
O'Shaughnessy.
A finance committee has been
appointed to be responsible to
raise funds from the general
public. They are currently
preparing a brochure which will
be distributed shortly to all
householders within the three
municipalities, Some $75,000
must be raised in order to qualify
for Wintario monies,
It is anticipated that the
proposed community centre will
be used for community functions
such as scouts, recreation,
wedding receptions, dances,

In response to a meeting called
for parents and interested sup-
porters of Scouts and Cubs, about
30 persons met at the United
Church March I.
The following group committee
was formed: chairman, Kenneth
McLachlan; vice-chairman, Mrs.
Don Clark; secretary, Mrs. Hank
Oosterwal and treasurer, Mrs.
Phil Cant.
It was noted that parents of all
boys in the Scouts and Cubs are
members of.the group committee
and will be called upon from time
to time to assist wherever
