Let's Talk
Country
was in the fact too many people
did not have numbers and this
was one of the prime reasons for
the original study. Council had
been advised that the fire
department and other emergency
agencies were concerned about
the difficulty finding homes that
weren't numbered.
"Surely people realize it could
be a matter of life and death,"
Wright commented,
Indecent act
nets jail term
A 31-year-old London man was
sentenced to four days in jail
after being found guilty of
committing an indecent act in
Exeter on December 13.
He appeared before His Honour
Judge Glenn Hays in Exeter
court, Tuesday.
Neale Gordon Kenny was
charged following an incident
near the grandstand at the
Exeter Community Park when he
exposed himself to a nine-year-
old girl after offering her some
candy,
Police charged the accused
three weeks after the incident
when he was in Exeter again. He
was apprehended through a
description of his car given by the
girl,
The court learned that Kenney
is presently on probation for a
similar, but less serious offence
and is currently receiving
psychiatric help for his problem.
Dale Brian Martin, RR 4
Ripley, was convicted of im-
paired driving and was handed a
$50 fine or five days and had his
licence suspended for three
months. He was charged on June
14 after being stopped, for driving
at an excessive speed. A
breathalizer gave a reading of 100
mgs.
A St. Marys driver, Donald
Oliver, was fined $200 or 20 days
for driving at a speed of 90 in a
50 m ph. zone. The accused was
apprehended on September 4
after passing an unmarked police
cruiser.
In the only other case, Bryan
Peter Corriveau, Zurich, was
fined $100 or 10 days on each of
two counts of possession of
narcotics.
Tennis club
asks control
The Exeter tennis club have
recommended that they be given
complete control of the local
tennis courts for the coming
season.
President Bill Dinney said the
club would operate the facility on
a self-sufficient basis whereby
the people who use it would pay
the costs involved. He said there
would be strict rules established
for the use and fees for tennis
players.
It was indicated as well that the
club would promote tennis in the
area by providing professional
lessons and fellowship at the least
possible expense to participants
and they would undertake d
lighting system to make the
courts available for greater use.
"We're trying to get going as
soon as possible," he told council
this week, noting that lessons
could start in April.
He said the club would assume
the responsibility for all main-
tenance and programing.
"I can't see any problems,"
Councillor Harold Patterson
commented.
Mayor Bruce Shaw said the
only problem may be in providing
enough time for tennis players
who may not wish to join the club.
Council referred the matter to
their newly appointed interim
recreation committee.

Mr. & Mrs. John Templeman
and family were Thursday
evening dinner guests of Rev. &
Mrs. Bruce Eaton and family.
The planning committee for the
get acquainted party planned by
the Staffa W.I. met Wednesday at
the home of Mrs. Carter Ker-
slake.
Ladies from Cromarty
Presbyterian Church joined with
the Hibbert United Church
Women on Friday for the World
Day of Prayer service. Guest
speaker was Mrs. Harry Strang,
Exeter.
Mr. & Mrs. Henry Harburn are
holidaying in the sunny south.
Rev. Bruce Eaton left on the
weekend for an overseas mission
assignment in Zaire (formerly
the Belgian Congo). He will do
well drilling work under the
sponsorship of the Presbyterian
Church of the U.S.A. and will be
Admitting that it "should have
been looked after long ago",
Councillor Ted Wright this week
presented two recommendations
for council to consider in an effort
to straighten out the local house
numbering system.
The recommendations he
presented were based on a report
submitted to council two years ago
by a special citizens' committee
of Dennis Hockey, Iry Arm-
strong, Carol Arthur and Olga
Davis.
A 'first'
for council
Exeter council may have come
up with a "first" this week when
they turned down a bylaw which
was presented for their con-
sideration.
The. bylaw, which would
provide fines for people who
failed to remove ice and snow
from their buildings and
sidewalks, was supported only by
Councillors Barb Bell and Lossy
Fuller.
The defeat didn't come as a
surprise. Several members had
indicated in the early stages of
discussion they would probably
not support the new edict.
However, Mayor Shaw
suggested it was unusual for a
bylaw to go down to defeat.
Main Street residents aren't
freed from keeping snow off the
sidewalks, though. An earlier
bylaw remains in effect and
stipulates that if the snow is' not
removed by the property owners,
council may have the work done
and bill the owner. There is no
penalty under the old bylaw.
By MRS. FRED BOWDEN
Mr. & Mrs. Lawrence Hirtzel
and Mr. & Mrs. Tom Kooy were
Friday evening visitors in Grand
Bend with Mr. & Mrs. Maurice
MacDonald.
Rev, John Beaton administered
the rite of baptism to Sherrie
Lynne Smith, daughter of Mr. &
Mrs. James Smith during Sunday
morning's service at the United
Church.
Mr. & Mrs. Tom Kooy were
Sunday dinner guests at the home
of Mr. & Mrs. Maurice Mac -
Donald, Grand Bend. The Kooy's
were celebrating a wedding
anniversary.
located at Mbiyimayi, where
people now carry their drinking
water for ten miles.
Mr. & Mrs. Rob Templeman
visited Sunday with Miss Carol
Anne Stewart, Guelph.
Their report had been turned
over to Councillors Wright and
Harold Patterson for further
study and the two got togehter in
the past two weeks after Hockey
had asked at the last meeting
when council would be making a
decision.
Wright said he agreed with the
citizens' report that there wasn't
much wrong with the present
system, except it was misun-
derstood by many people.
He admitted there were gaps,
but explained there would be
gaps in any system that was
used.
"The main problem," he said,
"is the number of houses without
numbers." He said there was also
a problem in that people did not
put them in a uniform place on
their residence and in some cases
the numbers had been placed on
the wrong entrance.
"Main Street is a mess, but that
would take a lot of figuring to
correct," he added.
Wright and Patterson
recommended that the present
system be corrected with as little
change as possible so that most
people could retain their present
numbers. However, they said
that a new system would have to ,
be used for crescents and cul-de-
sacs.
They also recommended that
the special citizens' committee
be empowered to undertake the
project along with the assistance
of the Exeter Kinsmen.
Hockey, who was at Monday's
meeting, said he was prepared to
work on the project again, but
noted that he didn't know if the
other members would be in view
of the considerable delay in having
their recommendations con-
sidered.
He said he was not certain the
Kinsmen were still prepared to
assist either, noting that the
decision had been made by the
executive of two years ago.
There was a debate whether
council should make it man-
datory.„,tor, people ,lp .erect
numbers on their homes, and
Councillor Wright said the town
already had too many bylaws.
It was noted that council had
the power to make such a rule
under the Municipal Act.
Wright had said at the outset
that one of the main problems
