GRAND BEN
AND DISTRICT NEWS
The Severn Park Steering
committee has recommended to
Grand Bend council that Severn
Park should remain under the
ownership of the Provincial
government.
The Golden Age Club of Grand
Bend held their March meeting,
Wednesday afternoon at the
Village Inn Retreat, with '39 in
attendance.
President William Love,
presided and meeting opened as
usual and all sang "Happy Birth-
day" to Mrs. Olive Webb,
During the business several
bus trips were discussed, and the
ladies are planning a quilting
bee.
Entertainment was in charge
of groups 3. Alec and Clara
Hamilton showed slides and
commentary of their trip to the
Maritimes and through several of
the U. S. eastern States.
Roy Morenz entertained by
singing "Ain't we crazy", and
"Mother the Queen of my heart,"
accompanying himself on guitar.
Euchre and crokinole were
played and a tasty lunch was
served, by Inn staff.
The committee's report to
council stated they arrived at this
decision due to the negative
reaction expressed by the eight
people who attended a public
meeting held by the steering
Church Sunday morning was
Rev. Jack Thompson, London,
secretary of the District Branch
of the Canadian Bible society. His
sermon topic was, "The Gospel of
Uncle Tom's Cabin," Choir an-
them was, "Does Jesus care?"
Rev. John Campbell, Church of
God pastor, attended a ministers
meeting, at St. Joseph, Michigan,
on Monday, Tuesday and Wed-
nesday.
March of Dimes
The March of Dimes campaign
in Grand Bend by members of the
Grand Bend Lioness club has
been completed and a total of
$758.03 collected.
committee.
At the meeting, all of those
present expressed concern that
any construction of recreation
facilities in the park would result
in the loss of the woodlots and
trails presently on the site,
The eight interested people who
attended the public meeting also
were unanimous in their desire to
see the park remain in its natural
state.
Council was divided over the
steering committee's recom-
mendation as councillors Harold
Green and Bill Baird said,
"they couldn't see turning Severn
Park back to the province."
Deputy-Reeve Bob Simpson
however, reminded them the
property had not been received
from the Provincial government
yet so it is not a matter of"turning
it back."
After some discussion Reeve
Bob Sharen suggested council
ask the Lions if they would
consider paying 50 per cent of the
operational costs for a five year
period to keep the park in its
present state. However, this is
presuming the Provincial
government would be willing to
allow Grand Bend to have the I
Park area under these con-
ditions.
The agreement with the
Province called for using the
Severn Park area for
recreational facilities. If this is
not going to be carried out in the
near future, the Province may
decide to keep the park area
themselves.
