Atoms defeated
by Strathroy
The Exeter atoms were
eliminated from Shamrock
playoffs this week when they lost
two straight to Strathroy in a
best-of-three semi-finals series.
Playing in Hockeyland, Friday,
the locals absorbed a 5-0 loss and
on Huron Park ice Sunday af-
ternoon they were nipped 3-2
when the visitors scored two
goals in the final period to erase
an early Exeter lead.
Strathroy took a 1-0 lead in the
first period of Sunday's contest,
but Exeter roared back with
markers late in the second and
early in the third to post their 2-1
margin.
Scott Lovie was the marksman
on the first tally when he picked
the top corner after taking a pass
from Steve Laithwaite, while
Steve Gould notched the second
to finish off a play with Jeff Pfaff.

Third Period Decides
The third period proved the
difference in Tuesday's win for
Preston as the Jesters scored
three unanswered goals. ,
Jim Reid put the Jesters ahead
in the first period and Ed Robb
tied the score in the middle frame
on passes from Jamie Robb and
Jacques Cousineau.
The third period Preston goals
were fired by Jim Reid, John
Chambers and Ken Crosby,
Second Period Decides
Three goals in the middle
frame Sunday allowed the Jets to
post their first playoff victory.
Each team scored two goals in
the first period.
Brian Murphy of the Jets
opened the game scoring at 4.56
of the opening period when he
converted passes from Randy
Roth and goalie Lorne Daer.
Only two minutes later the Jets
were ahead 2-0 on a successful
power play attempt. Randy
Roth pulled the trigger with
assists going to Jack Chipchase
and Brain Murphy,
The Jesters struck back before
the period ended to get back on
even terms. John Chambers
registered* at 17.27 while Bill
White of the Jets was serving a
double minor penalty and Jim
Reid followed with less than a
minute remaining.
The go-ahead goal for the Jets
early in the second period again
came as the result of a power
play. Bill Bannerman blinked the
red light behind the Preston net
on a play started by Randy Roth
and Jack Chipchase at 2.34.
Ken McCutcheon put the Jets in
front 4-2 at 5.06 on a three-way
combination, with Scott Graham
and Bill Bannerman.
Ken Stewart hit the mark for
Preston near the midway mark to
cut the Jets margin to a single
goal but it was upped to two
before the period ended.
With less than two minutes to
go Jacques Cousineau fired the
goal which also proved to be the
winner with assists going to Ed
and Jamie Robb.
The only goal in the third
period came from the stick of
John Chambers of Preston.
Randy Roth of the Jets missed
on a penalty shot attempt in the
third period when his shot grazed
the goal post.
End Season with Loss
The regular season for the Jets
ended Friday night when they
suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands
of the same Preston Jesters.
The only marksmen for the
Jets were Jack Chipchase and
Randy Roth. Both goals came in
the second period.
Ralph Johnston was the only
double scorer for Preston while
John Chambers and Cam Crosby
added singles. Johnston is ,a
brother of Terry Johnston of the
L-I club.
Exeter's Bantam and Pee Wee
2 teams can be excused if they
would rather forget the third
periods in their Saturday OMBA
quarter-final games in Pelham.
Both teams watched leads
disappear in the final 15 minutes,
as the Pee Wees were edged 7-6
while the bantams dropped a 7-3
verdict.
The losses eliminated both
teams as Pelham had won the
first two games in each series
with two wins in Huron Park the
previous weekend.
Despite the loss, the teams
came home in high spirits after
an enjoyable outing. They were
billeted with Pelham players for
the night and then enjoyed a trip
to Niagara Falls on Sunday
before returning to Exeter.
The Exeter bantams ex-
perienced a total collapse in the
final seven minutes of their
game, just when it appeared they
could be on their way to a win.
They started the final frame
with a 3-1 lead, but Pelham
rapped in six straight goals in
those last seven minutes.
Chris Mittleholtz put the locals
on the scoreboard in the first
period when he finished off a play
with Pete Tuckey and Rob Smith.
In the second period, Bruce Shaw
scored on an unassisted effort
and duplicated the feat after
Pelham had scored their first
goal of the game,
The score remained at 3-1 for
the next, eight minutes until.
Pelham started their six-goal
onslought to take the win.
In the Pee Wee contest, Pelham
scored three goals in the final
period to overcome an Exeter
lead to go on to their victory.
The homesters jumped into a 1-
0 lead with the only goal of the
first and went ahead by a 3-1
count in the second before Exeter
caught fire and rammed in four
goals to only one by their hosts.
That gave Exeter a 5-4 edge
starting the final stanza, but
Pelham tied it up in the early
minutes and then scored two
more to post a 7-5 margin.
Exeter whittled that to one goal
with a tally 'in the final minute,
but they couldn't get the
equalizer.
Exeter fans were disappointed
in the officiating. Two Pelham
goals were reportedly scored on
off-side plays, while an Exeter
tally was disallowed by the
referees.
Steve Francis paced the Exeter
attack with four goals, and
singles were picked up by Jim
Siddall and Brian Blackburn.
Francis also picked up one
Assist, while Siddall, Chris
VanGerwen and Trevor Boyle
had two each. Graham Solomon
was also in on. one of the Exeter
goals.
Once again,. Brian Gula was
one-man wrecking crew for,
Pelham as he scored three of hie
team's goals.
