By ELAINE TOWNSHEND
I have a problem. My brother-
in-law's birthday is only a few
days away, and I have no idea
what to give him. He's one of
those people who has everything.
With a charming wife, three
great kids and a sister-in-law like
me, what more could he want?
When he was turning their
basement into a family room, a
gift presented no problem. I
simply took my oldest nephew to
the store, and he pointed out the
tools his dad needed. Now, the
rec room is finished; John has a
huge collection of tools, and I'm
confronted with the same old
question - what can I give him for
his birthday?
I learned long ago not to ask
him want he wants, because the
answer is always "a Corvette."
He rates horses as highly as
Corvettes, and since I can't af-
ford a real horse, I've sub-
stituted inanimate objects. So
far, I've given him a wall
tapestry with three palominos
embossed on it, a pair of book
ends in the shape of horse heads
and a brass door knocker that
resembles a horseshoe. I fear
another horsey gift for the house
will cause my sister to holler,
"Whoa!"
Maybe I'll combine his two
loves, horses and Corvettes, by
buying an ornament shaped like
a horse, that he can mount on the
hood of his Corvette whenever he
gets one.
I could give him a box of
turtles; they're the only kind of
chocolates he likes. He'll have to
eat them quickly or hide the box
before the rest of us nab onto it,
though.
I'd take him out to dinner, but
he'd probably expect a
restaurant other than
MacDonalds.
He thinks John Denver is a fan-
tastic singer, and that's one point
on which we agree. He'd enjoy
listening to a Denver LP, but
that's what I gave him for Christ-
mas, For three weeks, I wrestled
with the temptation to spin the
record on my own turntable. I
don't feel strong enough to fight
a similar battle in March.
I'd give him a subscription to
this newspaper, but he might
read my column now and again. I
wouldn't be able to make any
remarks about him, and that
would cramp my writing style.
My parents are giving him a
shirt. Maybe buy a tie to go
with it. There's always room for
one more in his closet.
In the past few years, lottery
tickets have become popular
presents. If I bought John a Loto
Canada or Wintario ticket and if
he won a million dollars, I
wonder how much he'd share
with the generous person who
made it all possible.
I've put a lot of thought into
John's birthday present, and I've
reached this conclusion:
Regardless of the gift I chose,
he'll be happy because he values
the thought behind the present
more than its monetary worth.
Therefore, he'll accept an or-
nament instead of a live horse;
he'll appreciate a tie more than a
tuxedo, and he'll enjoy a Big Mac
as much as a steak. I hope.
Profanity is the use of strong
words by weak people.
MR, AND MRS. RON DOUGALL
Judy Miller and Ron Dougall exchanged marriage vows on January 29
at Dashwood Lutheran Church. The wedding party was restricted at
the time because of the blizzardy weather conditions and another
ceremony was held on February 18. Rev. Mellecke officiated. The bride
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Miller; Dashwood and the
groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Harry Dougall, Exeter. The maid of
honour was Erika Freiter and the bridesmaids were Joanne and Bren-
da Miller. The best man was Steve Faber and guests were ushered by
Lorne Miller and Ro er Dougall.
MR. AND MRS. ROY PULLMAN
The marriage of Nancy Evelyn Colbert to Roy Edward Pullman was
solemnized .at a Christmas candlelight service in Hyde Park United
Church on December 28, 1976. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Whitney Colbert, Hyde Park and the groom is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Cleveland Pullman, Exeter. Reverend C. W. de Quetteville of-
ficiated. Soloist was Mrs. B. Strapp, accompanied by Mrs. M. G.
Dukeshire at the organ. The bride, given in marriage by her father,
was attended by her sister, Judith Anne, as maid of honour and her
cousin, Miss Tricia Grabowski of Winds6r, as flower girl. Groomsman
'was Mr. John McLean of Surrey, British Columbia, and ushers were Mr.
Ron Michalski, London and Mr. Ron Pullman, Centralia, twin brother of I
the groom. The service was followed by a reception at Sunningdale
Country Club. The couple are now residing in London.
Seniors receive
weather break
After a stormy January and
February when meetings had to
be called off the Senior Citizens
held their March meeting
Monday .
It was the first meeting of the
year with a good attendance of
over 50 members.
Euchre was played along with
crokinole for an hour. Then a
program of musical numbers
comprised.of a trio, Henry Green
on violin, Lorne Johnston bango
and a new addition Mr. Boland
from Zurich Bluewater apart-
ments with violin and vibrator,
Several solos by Mrs. Zivkovic
accompanied by Mrs. Boyle of
Dashwood, reading by Mrs.
Burton, accordion numbers by
David Rundle, a humorous skit
"The Census Taker" by Mrs.
Finkbeiner and Mrs. Merkley.
Several solos and duets by Mrs.
Bullock and Lily Greb on ac-
cordion and guitar ac-
companiment.
Lunch was then served by the
ladies of the Rebekahs and the
men's trio played several
numbers while lunch was being
served a business meeting was
held after lunch.
Love in Action, was the theme
for Friday's World bay of
Prayer. Approximately 80 ladies
gathered in the Anglican Church
in Exeter, to discover anew how
to put love into action.
Engelina Van Essen was the
guest speaker. She stressed the
fact that, in order to love, "we
have to define what love really
is." She continued, "The love we
are talking about, is the love
expressed in the Greek word
agape. It is the deepest, purest
kind of love; - the love God
revealed to us, by letting His Son
die on the cross for our sins."
Jesus said: "A new com-
mandment I give to you, that you
love one another." and, "If
anyone says I Love God, and
hates his brother, he is a liar." In
loving our brother, we have to
forgive. Love and forgiveness go
hand in hand. We can only love
through faith. By faith we will
love, and thus be part of a con-
tinuous flow of giving and sharing
with those in need.
The love we are talking about is
unselfish, - it is a turning away
from self, - a caring for the
and new ways fqr "Love in
Action,"
