T-A photo Birthday for senior, instructor bakes cake Approximately 160 members of the Lucan Junior Farmers' and friends gathered at the Kirkton Community Centre on Friday evening, February 18, for their second annual banquet and dance. Wendy Hardy was Emcee for the event offering the toast to the Queen and welcoming and in- Parade to United Church Baden-Powell Sunday was observed by the Guides, Scouts, Brownies and Cubs with mem- bers of the and Explorer Groups as their guests at the morning service in the United Church. The colour party included Brownies, Tracy DeBoer, Giselle Williams, Cheryl Lyn; Guides, Martina Engel, Mary Clarke, Jacquiline Crony; Cubs, Tommie Vandenberg, Tony O'Brien, Abner Butler, David Radcliffe, Dennis McDonald, Paul Lankin, and Scouts, Don Riley, Doug Smith and Francis Giesen. Guide Cindy Bakker led in the Psalm followed by the youth groups singing a version of "Kum Ba Ya" (Come by here) with the congregation joining in thesecond verse and chorus. Those receiving the offering were: Brownie Dinette Steffans, Guide Carol Manders, C.G.I.T. Jacqueline Green and Scout John Storey. Rev. Cecil Jardine spoke to the youth groups on the topic "To Love and Serve God". This morning (Thursday) at 9:45 the inter-faith "Prayer and Share" group meets with leader Ann Elliott of Strathroy. All women of the community are welcome. Atoms reach second round The Lucan Atoms have ad- vanced to the second round of Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs by ousting Watford. In the third and deciding game at the Huron Park arena Friday night the Lucan youngsters were victorious by a score of 6-2. Jeff Shipley and John Cook each fired two successful shots to lead the Lucan scoring attack. Adding single goals were Lester Arts and Brian Haygarth, The next opposition for the Lucan club will be Parkhill. The first game was played in Parkhill last night, Wednesday. A weekend exhibition series between the Lucan and Sterling Heights Michigan teams ended in a draw. Sterling Heights won 4-3 in Hensall Saturday, and Lucan rebounded to win 6-3 in Ilderton, Sunday. Brian Stewart scored all four goals for Sterling Heights, Saturday. Jeff Shipley was a double scorer for Lucan and Brian Haygarth added the odd goal. Jeff Shipley with two goals led Lucan to the Sunday victory and single goals were fired by Brian Haygarth, Brent Bannerman and Jess Crawford, troducing the Head Table guests in a unique and humorous way. Grace was asked by Tom Hardy and the catering group was thanked by Ron Funston. Sherry Riddell introduced the guest speaker, M.H. Hodgins, long time treasurer of the Lucan and Community Memorial Arena Board. Mr. Hodgins had been asked to give a run down of the events leading up to thebuilding of the "old arena" and of some of the happenings during the 50's and 60's. This he did very ably and interestingly. His "paper", as he called it, was very well received which was evident by the attention he commanded, and one lady was heard to remark she could have listened for an hour. In thanking Mr. Hodgins, Russ Smith also presented him with a plaque inscribed "In ap- preciation to Murray Hodgins for services rendered to community —Lucan Jr. Farmers, Mr. Officers named for 4-H club The first meeting of the 4-H Lucan No, 1 Club was held February 16 at the home of Mrs. Beth Cowdrey. The leaders are Mrs. Cowdrey and Mrs. Ruth Ann Curtis. The officers were elected as follows: president, Beth Arthurs, secretary-treasurer, Darlene Paton and Reporter Laura McKenzie. During the meeting material lines were discussed, the members were taught to take measurements and they put themselves into categories, e.g. "tall and slender", "petite", etc. Cancer group plans activities The executive of the Lucan Biddulph Branch of the Canadian Cancer Society met at the home of Campaign Chairman Mrs.Dean Gibson of Lucan on Wednesday evening to plan this year's campaign activities. Len Maslen presided and conducted the business, which included a decision to hold another Great Family Ride as it proved an overwhelming success last year, also arrangements are being made for a home baking sale. Two new service to patients members were welcomed, Mrs. Helen Toonders and Mrs. Mary DeBrouwer. Openings for Lent sessions Learning for Lent commences next Thursday, March 3. There are still openings in the Interest Groups of Crotcheting-Knitting, Women and the Law and the Travelogues. Men, women and children are welcome. Child care is provided. He said he would treasure the plaque and it is presently hanging above his desk in his "office". Sharon Young introduced past president Richard Acres who spoke briefly of the needs of the Junior Farmer Organization, in order that it continue to be a very worthwhile community service and educational group. Brian Noyes emceed a really "fun" variety show with those taking part being as follows: Scott Anderson, Dennis Burt, Diane Carty, Maylyn Fevery, Brent Froats, Ron Funston, Randy Kraul, Brenda Parnall, Sherry Riddell, Brenda Scott, Ron Simpson, Bob Smith, Brad Taylor and Marty Wraith. Dancing to records was en- joyed following the variety show, Members of both the Sunshine Group and the Busy Buddies enjoyed a decorated birthday cake with their lunch on Thur- sday at their regular weekly meeting. The cake, in honour of the 90th birthday of Miss Aggie Nor- thgraves, was baked by the in- structor Gladys Ross, who also did the writing on the individual smaller heart-shaped cake given to Miss Northgraves. Members of the Busy Buddies did the rest of the decorating and everyone thought Mrs. Ross must have 'been an excellent instructor. Bingo was enjoyed by mem- bers of the Sunshine Group, and eight members of that group played bridge with Oney McFalls and Maude Hodgins taking high score, During the business meeting, chaired by president Merna O'Neil, Olive and Rose Atkinson agreed to convene the card games, etc., for the next two months, a delayed birthday greeting was extended to Mildred Hertzil and this week's birthdays include Liz Conlin, Agnes Hotson and Aggie Northgraves. A very humorous reading was given by Mary Kooy. Members of the Lucan Women's Institute answered the roll call at their meeting Wed- nesday afternoon by giving "A gem of thought", some of which caused much laughter. Public Relations Convener Iva M. Hodgins directed their thoughts toward the motto "There are gems of thought that are ageless and eternal...Cicero" telling something of the life of Cicero and giving quotes, some humorous, and others thought- provoking, from various writers. The group decided to send president, Lillian Ashton, to the Officer's Conference at Waterloo University in May. A thank you note was read from the "Gift Cupboard" committee at Thameswood Lodge, London, for the gifts to the Cancer Society in December, and portions of the "President's Letter" were also read by secretary Iola Goring. Everyone is invited to attend an afternoon of euchre in the Masonic Hall on Monday, February 28 at 1:30 p.m, Refreshments and prizes, with admission only .75 cents. A draw will take place for a mystery prize. The District Annual was an- nounced by District Director Bernice Lockyer for Tuesday, May 17, in Parkhill with Cloverdale Institute as hostess Branch, the theme to be "Building for Tomorrow". The subscription to "The Canadian Consumer" will be taken for one more year, It was suggested that copies be placed in the Library following reading by the members, The business meeting was chaired by the president.
