win dual meet
Despite injuries to three
members of the team, the South
Huron District High School
wrestlers won the Huron-Perth
Conference. dual meet cham-
pionship for the ninth consecutive
year.
The South Huron wrestlers
downed Goderich 54-30 to take the
title, Coach Doug Ellison com-
mented on the win, "The results
were gratifying considering that
Mike Westelaken and Cliff Hicks
were out with knee injuries and a
shoulder injury kept Randy
Fisher out of the competition."
Winning matches for South
Huron against Goderich were
Phil De Haan, Vince Winters,
Richard Rooseboom, Brian
Westelaken, Brian Pym, Brian
Mayer, Bill Duttman, Ron Miller,
Ron Bilcke, Rick Bilcke and Ray
Gallagher.
After winning the Huron-Per.th
team championship a week
earlier the South Huron grap-
plers finished in tenth spot in
Saturday's WOSSA competition
in London,
A total of 45 schools were
represented in London with an
average of 20 wrestlers in each
weight class.
Coach Ellison's comments on
the WOSSA meet were, "Our
finish was a little disappointing
but satisfactory considering we
were short three of our top
performers due to injuries. With
Westelaken, Hicks and Fisher in
action we probably would have
placed fourth or fifth,
Rick Bilcke was best for South
Huron with four victories and two
losses good for third place at 194
pounds. Finishing fourth were
Brian Mayer, Vince Winters and
Ron Bilcke.
Tuesday afternoon coach
Ellison released the names of the
winners of two special awards
and said both decisions were very
difficult to make,
The best wrestler title will be
shared by Brian Mayer and Vince
Winters. Mayer posted 30 vic-
tories during the season while
suffering only seven losses.
Winters was successful in 33
matches and also had seven
setbacks.
In special events, Mayer won
his weight crown at Huron-Perth
and the annual Red and Black
tourney. He was also fourth at
WOSSA and fifth at a Kitchener-
Waterloo tournament.
Vince Winters won Huron-
Perth in his class, was second at
Huron-Perth and a Woodstock
event, fourth at WOSSA and fifth
in Kitchener.
The most improved wrestler is
Murton Brock. Last year Murton
wrestled second to Mike
The recent weekend trip to
Royal Oak, Michigan by five
hockey teams from Huron Park
was successful as the area clubs
gained an even split with two
wins and a tie in the five games
played,
The Huron Park bantams
scored a 4-1 win over their
Michigan counterparts and the
midgets were victorious by a
score of 2-0.
The two girls teams battled to a
2-2 draw and Royal Oak won the
pee wee and mite division con-
tests by scores of 2-1 and 4-2,
respectively.
Rich Lather led the Huron Park
bantam scoring attack with two
successful shots. Steve Gibbs
assisted on both and Don
Stuckless added one assist.
Steve Gibbs scored on a three-
way combination with Rich
Lather and Benjie Hillman and
Tony Underhill registered with
Westelaken and was unable to
compete in Huron-Perth or
WOSSA competitions.
This year he blossomed out to
take his weight division at Huron-
Perth and Woodstock, was third
at Red and Black and fifth at,
Kitchener.

The Huron Park midget
scoring was taken care of by Tim
Smith and Shayne Peacock with
assists going to Ron Kennedy and
Bob Lawrence.
The lone Huron Park pee wee
score came from the stick of
George Tomes on passes from
Robbie Winger and Shawn Wells.
Yvonne Wells and Kim Ken-
nedy were the Huron Park girls
sharpshooters. Darlene Smith
assisted on both and Kim Ken-
nedy picked up a single assist.
The Huron Park mite division
marksmen were David
"Meeker" Smith and Don Fields.
Gaining assists were Todd Lewis,
Mike Lessard and Steve
McIntyre,
In house league play this week,
the Canadiens blanked the Leafs
a-o and then suffered a 4-0 shutout
at the hands of the Bruins.
Cal Stanlake was a double
scorer for the Canadiens and
Brett Batten added the third goal.
All came on unassisted efforts.
Debbie Lightfoot scored three
goals and added an assist to
account for the Bruins scoring.
Fred Gregus picked up one
assist.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets broke
even in two. Ontario Hockey
Association Continental Senior
"A" games this week and con-
tinue in fourth place in the league
standings,
The London Kings head the
standings with 55 points, the
Stratford Perths are second with
48 points, the Preston Jesters
have 46 and Jets follow with 43
points.
Friday night the Jets dropped a
7-5 decision to Stratford and
Sunday afternoon they squared
their week's record with a close 5-
4 victory over the Preston
Jesters. Both, games were played
at the Ilderton arena.
The Jets are in action on five
occasions during the next week.
Last night, Wednesday they were
at home to the Durham Huskies
and Friday night the Woodstock
Royals will be at the Ilderton
Late goal proves winner
Jamie Robb's successful shot
at 14,01 of the third period
allowed the Jets to nip Preston
Sunday afternoon, Terry John-
ston and Ed Robb provided
assists.
The first period was even with
each team scoring two goals. Ted
Thomas and Murray Markle
were the marksmen for Preston,
Bill Bannerman triggered the
first Jets score on a three-way
effort with Bill White and Doug
Galloway and Barry Baynham
finished off a combination with
Ed Parkinson and Rick Fifield.
Shortly after two minutes in the
middle frame, Ed Parkinson hit
the scoring mark with assists
going to Randy Roth and Rick
Fifield.
About three minutes later Bill
Bannerman converted a pass
from Doug Galloway as the two
broke in on one lone Preston
defender to put the L-I club ahead
by two goals.
John Chambers again reduced
the Jets lead to a single goal by
scoring at seven minutes for
Preston and Ken Stewart fired
the equalizer near six minutes of
the third period to set the stage
for Robb's winning counter.
John Robertson was in goal for
the Jets and faced 40 shots while
his team-mates fired 45 shots at
Paul Steffler in the Preston goal.
Double scorers hurt
Two goals each by Jim Betts
and Randy Stubel later in the
third period allowed the Stratford
Perths to come from behind and
post Friday's 7-5 win over the
Jets.
The Perths held a slight 2-1
edge at the end of the first period
on goals by Dan Duncan and
Terry Warboys. The lone marker
for the Jets came from the stick
of Ed Robb on a power play with
assists going to Jamie Robb and
Barry Baynham.
The Stratford lead was
retained at the end of 40 minutes
of play as Jamie Robb hit for the
Jets on passes from Ed Robb and
Jacques Cousineau and Jerry
Harrigan hit for Stratford,
In the first four minutes of the
third period the Jets struck for
two goals to take a 4-3 lead which
lasted until Betts and Stubel took
Over.
Bill Bannerman was the first
Jets sniper on a play started by
Doug Galloway - and Ken
McCutcheon and Ed Robb
finished off a three-way effort
with Rick Martin and Jamie
Robb.
A power play at 16.51 produced
the final Jets score from the stick
of Scott Graham on an unassisted
effort,
