This home study program is directed to all types of home gardeners, says Professor Harold Crawford of the Office of Continuing Education. "The course covers a wide variety of topics including soils, fertilizers, plant propagation, vegetable culture, herbs, fruits, house plants, trees, shrubs, lawns, lanscape design and pest control. It is designed to take about one year, with an average of one assignment per month. However, there is no time-limit," says Professor Crawford. Home gardening first offered in 1960 through the continuing education program at the University of Guelph, is one of the most popular courses. After successful completion of this non- credit course, students receive a The 'whole' often cheaper Everyone wants to make an economical food buy. Choosing chicken for a favorite recipe may be the first step to saving a few pennies. Food specialists at the Ontario Food Council, Ministry of Agriculture and Food, suggest you compare the price of whole chicken to that of chicken parts before deciding which one to buy. It seems easier to pick up a package of chicken parts. However, chicken parts usually cost more per pound than whole chicken. To save money buy the whole chicken and cut it into READY FOR THE QUARTETTE — Members of the Alpha Pi Sorority were arrayed in musical theme costumes for a recent meeting. A five-year-old boy listened to his father trying to sell their house to a young couple. The prospective buyers decided they should think it over, The father was prepared to wait, but his son piped up, "You'll have to make up your minds, you know!" How much would you like to bet that in 15 or 20 years that kid is a first-rate salesman? Another man put his car up for sale, and a neighbour came to talk about a deal. When he left, the car owner went into the house to tell his wife how much the neighbour had offered for it. His young son obviously wanted to get rid of the car and wasn't at all interested in the price. He pointed out, "The question is, Dad, 'Is he going to buy it?' " My four-year-old nephew has an obsession for Corvettes, mainly due to his father's coaching. Every time he spots one on the street, Brian ex- claims, "Wow! Look at that cool Corvette." He urges his Dad to catch up to it, but that's difficult to do in a '67 Ambassador. Anyone, who takes him for a drive around the neighbourhood, has to pass a certain driveway in a certain crescent because that's where a certain green Corvette lives. One day last summer my sister pulled up beside a sporty Corvette at a stop light. The win- dows were down in both cars. Brian leaned out his side and shouted to the driver, "Cool car, man!" The driver grinned, straighten- ed his shoulders and raised his chin. A little boy with a passion for Corvettes had just made his day! The older the kids grow, though, the less innocent their remarks become. For example, my twelve-year- old niece, Janice, has become calorie conscious; that is, she's conscious of the calories I eat. When I reach for a piece of pie or cake, she tut-tuts, "You'll get fat, Elaine." Nevertheless I have no worries about my future, thanks to Janice and her cat Corky. You see, Corky is going to become a movie star and will be even more successful than Morris. When he becomes rich and famous, he and his mistress are 'going to move ELECT SLATE Another Hurondale 4-H project is underway with Mrs. Mathers and Mrs. Taylor teaching "Clothes For Leisure." Twelve girls from Hurondale 8 met at the home of Mrs. Mathers. Brenda Brunzlow was elected president, the secretary is Suzanne Mathers, the treasurer Mary Ann Hogan. The press reporters are Miriam Wright and Tammy Robinson. After the election of officers, Mrs. Mathers •and Mrs. Taylor proceeded to show different types of fabrics. They also told which material would be most suitable for different articles of clothing. into a mansion in Beverly Hills. I convinced Jan that an estate would be too large for she and Corky to live in alone. Then I added that surely she could make some arrangements for her poor old Aunt Elaine. "Sure," she answered, "you can have the maid's room." Her fourteen-year-old brother, Dave, seems to have only one description of his sister: "She's crazy!" One evening my sister, mother, and I were discussing my plans to move into an apart- ment and live alone. Suddenly, from his chair in a corner, Dave bolstered my cause with this reasoning: "Why shouldn't she be on her own? She's almost forty." Some teen-agers tend to ex- aggerate, and that stretch of Dave's imagination brought him a dirty look—among other threats. Kids do say the darndest things! parts yourself. It's easily done with shears and a little practice. It cutting your own chicken be sure you have a use for all the pieces, to make the savings worthwhile. When fresh whole chickens are featured at the grocery store, buy several and cut them up at home. Separate the parts into packages to suit a recipe or meal, then freeze the packages. Legs, breasts and wings can be used in main dishes and casseroles. Use backs, necks and giblets in soups and stews. Remember to compare the price of whole chicken with chicken parts. Occasionally chicken pieces will be a good buy, but cutting your own chicken is usually more economical. Plan events for Mensal! The Christian women of the German Democratic Republic have prepared the World Day of Prayer program on the theme Love In Action. A message from the German ladies includes, "God has shown what our togetherness should be. Jesus Christ has shown us how our togetherness can be realized and through the power of the Holy Spirit we are able to translate love into action." Approximately 10,2 million citizens, about 60 percent of the German population belong to Christian churches and other religious fellowships. Of these, about eight million are members of a Protestant regional church "landeskirche", more than one million belong to the Roman Catholic Church and the balance to the free churches and other religious fellowships.
