Exeter Kinsmen midgets
opened their second round of
OMHA playoffs with a convincing
6-0 win over New Hamburg in
Huron Park, Sunday.
The two teams had to battle the
elements before they could do
battle on the ice. The referees
from Stratford were unable to
reach the arena when they ended
up in a . snowbank and Rick
Singleton from Lucan took over
the chores with Bill Batten and

even series
The Lucan atoms staved off
elimination in Ontario Minor
Hockey Association playoffs with
a resounding 8-2 win Monday
over Watford.
Watford took the first game
played in Hensall Saturday by a
score of 3-1.
The third and deciding game
will be played at the Huron Park
arena Friday night at 6 p.m.
Jeff Shipley went on a scoring
spree with six goals Monday to
lead the Lucan attack. Scoring
single goals were Lester Arts and
Sean Holden.
The only Lucan goal Saturday
also came from the stick of Jeff
Shipley,
Brian Taylor handling the
linesmen duties. 'The game was
almost an hour late in starting
due to the problem in getting
officials to the arena.
The best-of-five set swings to
New Hamburg for a game this
Sunday and the third and fourth
St. Marys took a 2-1 lead in•
their best-of-five atom playoff
series with Exeter, Saturday,
when they scored a narrow 4-3
margin in Embro.
It was the third straight game
in which the outcome has been
settled by a one-goal margin.
The fourth game set for Huron
Park on Sunday was cancelled
due to the weather and it has been
rescheduled for this Friday at
8:00 p.m.
Saturday's contest was in doubt
right through to the final bell as
Exeter had a two-man advantage
through a portion of the last
minute but couldn't get the
equalizer.
The locals took a 1-0 lead in the
first frame when Scott Lovie
rifled in a shot after taking a pass
from Steve Laithwaite,
St. Marys battled back to knot
the count and then Doug Scott
gave Exeter another lead when
he flipped a puck into the net on a
scramble. Mike .Tiedeman and
Darren Vandergunst drew the
assists.
The hosts knotted the count
before the first period ended and
scored another in the secondiand
once in the third to open up a'4-2
margin.
Exeter pulled to within one goal
halfway through the third when
George Pratt slammed in a loose
puck off a rebound with Van-
dergunst again picking up the
assist.
St. Marys ran into three
penalties in the last minute and a
half, but Exeter failed to take

Spark plug rule of thumb: the
longer the insulator, the hotter
the plug. If it's too hot for your
engine, the insulator nose will
look white instead of grey or
tan.
Rough idle and stalling
problems are often caused by
air leaks. Check the gaskets at
carburetor and intake
manifold, and the hoses or
tubing that feed vacuum-
operated units in the car. If no
leaks are found, you may have
a cracked manifold.

games will be played at Huron
Park on the following Friday and
Saturday.
Exeter's entry dominated
Sunday's opening game and
Roger O'Brien had to turn away
only a handful of dangerous shots
to earn the shutout. It was his
advantage of the extra attackers
although they just missed on
several attempts and hemmed St.
Marys in their own end until the
final buzzer.
On Wednesday night, the atoms
played in Lambeth to complete
their Shamrock league action and
came out on the short end of a 4-1
verdict.
George Pratt gave Exeter an
early lead on a play with Jeff
Pfaff, but Lambeth knotted the
count and then took the lead with
two quick goals late in the middle
frame.
Jets split
with Royals
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets broke
even in two Ontario Hockey
Association Continental Senior
games this week and both were
against the Woodstock Royals.
Friday night at the Ilderton
arena, the Jets score'd a 5-2 vic-
tory and back in Woodstock Sun-
day itwas the Royals by a score
of 10-6.
Coach Don Urbshott of the Jets
was forced to go with only nine
players in addition to his ;goal
tenders due to injuries and
adverse weather conditions.
Urbshott was forced to go with
Doug Galloway and Steve Proc-
tor as the only regular
defencemen. Jack Chipchase is
still recovering from a back in-
jury and Barry Baynham, Bill
Bourne and Terry Johnston were
unable to make it to Woodstock
because of the wintry conditions.
This week the Jets see action
on three occasions. Last night,
Wednesday they were in Walker-
ton to meet the Durham Huskies
and thiS weekend they will be at
home in Ilderton for two games.
Friday flight at 8:15 the Strat-
ford Perths will supply the op-
position and Sunday afternoon
the Preston Jesters will be in for
a 2 p.m. contest.
Rick Fifield with a two goal ef-
fort was best for the Jets in the
scoring department in Sunday's
10-6 loss to Woodstock.
Single goals came from the
sticks of Doug Galloway, Ed
Robb, Bill Bannerman and
Jamie Robb. Galloway's counter
came with the Royals playing a
manDon short.
Jones with a three goal
performance led the Royals
scoring attack, Ray Tilley and
Larry Fink were next with two
goals apiece and single scores
were fired by Tom Murphy, Ted
Brown and John Yeoman.
The Royals led in the shots on
goal department 41 to 33. Lorne
Daer was in goal for the L-I club
and Ken Kitching guarded the
twines for Woodstock.
In Ilderton Friday night each
team scored two goals in the
first period and then the Jets
pulled away with two successful
shots in the second period and
one more in the finale.
The Royals went to work early
and were in front 2-0 by shortly
after the three minute mark of
the opening session. Scoring
were Tom Murphy and Ted
Brown.
Jim Pinnegar was first to hit
the scoreboard for the Jets as he
hit the mark on a three-way ef-
fort with Scott Graham and Bill
White at 14:39.
Less than three minutes later
Randy Roth was in the right spot
in front of the Woodstock net to
tip-in a shot by Rick Fifield, Ed
Parkinson also assisted.
The eventual winning goal
came at 7:14 of the second on a
shot by Ed Parkinson, Assisting
were Randy Roth and 13111
Bannerman.
At 13:23 Randy Roth hit Rick
Fifield with a good pass between
the Woodstock defence and he
went in unmolested to make the
score 4-0. Jim Pinnegar also
helped.
second consecutive playoff white-
wash,
Brad Taylor shot Exeter into a
lead after less than three minutes
when he finished off a play with
Perry Pooley, while Dennis
Preszcator came back near the
middle of the frame on a play
with Pooley and Taylor to give
the locals a 2-0 margin.
They increased that to 5-0 by
the end of the second on goals by
Randy Parsons, Perry Pooley
and Dennis Preszcator's second of
the night. Paul Pooley, Preston
Dearing, Brad Taylor, Darrel
• Preszcator and Randy Fisher
picked up assists on the three
goals.
In the final frame, Paul Pooley
teamed up with Fisher to notch
the final goal of the contest.
There were 15 penalties called
in the game, with Exeter being
assessed eight.
New Hamburg probably would
have been happier to see them
without any, because Exeter
scored two of their goals while
playing a man short.
