It's only natural that student
revolt should spread to high
schools. After all, we wouldn't
want our kids to enter college un-
prepared.

Meet Mt. Brydges in playoffs

Hawks clinch pennant in junior tlY league
Sassenachs continue
to lead in dart league
omommummensmounsmitainiii
The 1976-77 Junior D league
standing wasn't settled until the
final 42 seconds of the last game
of the season in a finish that even
Hollywood would have trouble
duplicating,
That 42 seconds was the time it
took the Exeter Hawks to score
two goals in Zurich, Tuesday, to
beat their namesakes from
Mitchell and wrap up first place
in the standings with an exciting
5-3 victory.
Actually, the final week of the
season had two "must" games
for the Hawks and they came
through in flying colors in both.
On Friday night, they beat the
other top contenders, Tavistock,
by a convincing 8-4 margin to set
up the show-down with Mitchell,
However, even with a loss, the
Hawks could have copped the

crown as they still had a game in
hand against Belmont. That
game will not be played now as it
will have no affect on the stan-
dings, Exeter had 48 points with
23 wins, two ties and only six
losses,
Tavistock have one game
remaining with the last place
Sea forth squad, and if they win,
would be awarded second place
due to a better win record than
Mitchell, with whom they would
be tied in points.
The Hawks open their playoff
campaign this Sunday at the
Zurich arena at 8:00 p,m, when
theyt face Mt. Brydges in the first
game of a best-of-seven affair,
If Mitchell end up in third, they
will tackle Lucan in the other
odd-team series and if the two
Hawks teams win as expected
this would set up another show-
down between Mitchell and
Exeter for the right to enter the
OHA semi-finals.
Two teams from the area
junior loop will advance into the
playoffs and the even-team series
will probably pit Tavistock
against Thamesford and Belmont
against Port Stanley.
Real thriller
Tuesday night's contest in
Zurich, which attracted the
largest crowd of the season,
provided plenty of excitement for
the fans as the league cham-
pionship was in doubt until the
19:18 mark of the third period
when John VanGerwen flipped a
puck behind the Mitchell goalie to
The Exeter crew then jumped
into a 3-2 lead when Kim
McKinnon was left all alone in
front of the Mitchell net and
tucked the puck in after taking a
pass from. Weido. Muller also
drew an assist.
However, in, less than two
minutes, Mitchell rebounded to
tie the score at the 12:31 mark
and the two teams battled
through the next 27 minutes on an

night in Hensall. A scheduled
Sunday night contest was post-
poned,
Pfaff Electric downed the
Guess Who 6-2 and Algoma Tire
outscored MacLean-Passmore by
a 9-5 score.
In the first game Jim Pfaff,
Kevin Buchanan and Bill Consitt
each scored twice for Pfaff
Electric and Doug Osgood took
care of the Guess Who scoring in
double fashion.
Gary Parsons with a hat trick
performance was best for
Algoma Tire. Toni McDonald was
next in line with two goals and
single scores were added by Bob
McDonald, Rudy Damjanov,
Paul Kerslake and Jim
McDonald,
Larry Skinner led the
MacLean-Passmore counting
with two successful shots. Get-
ting one goal apiece were Dennis
Passmore, Ralph Batten and
Wally Tomasik.

Lucan midgets
edge Watford
The Lucan midgets defeated
Watford 4.3 Friday night to take a
one game lead in their Ontario
Minor Hockey Association
midget quarter final series.
The second game set for
Sunday was postponed because of
the weather. Coach Bill Hodgins
said Tuesday morning the game
had not yet been rescheduled.
Martin Clarke with a two goal
effort led the Lucan midgets in
tk g opening victory. Scoring in
single fashion were Calvin
McCallum and Kyle Pederson.
even basis until the final minute
heroics.
Exeter had an edge in play in
the contest, but failed to find the
range on several good attempts
due to some bad breaks around
the net and some fine netminding
by Holmes.
At the other end of the rink,
Randy Lovie started out rather
shaky, but over the last half of the
game settled down to his usual
standard to thwart the Mitchell
attack.
The Hawks wasted little time in
taking the upper hand in Friday's
important contest against the
Tavistock Braves,
Four goals in the first 10
minutes of the first period before
the Tavistock team knew what
happened enabled the Hawks to
take a commanding lead.
The game was only a minute
and 12 seconds old when John
Van Gerwen converted a pass
from Ken Pinder. At 4:54 the
score rose to 2-0 on a successful
shot by Matt Muller with the pass
provided by Phil Knight..
Only 50 seconds later Rick
Ingram hit the scoring mark on a
three-way combination with Tom
Hayter and Noel Skinner.
The fourth Exeter marker at
exactly the halfway mark came
from the stick of Brian Taylor
with the assist going to Rick
Ingram.
The Braves recovered quickly
and came up with three goals in
the balance of the first frame to
cut the Exeter margin to a, single
goal.
Finding the scoring range for
Tavistock were Brian Taves,
Lyle Rosendale and Mark Forler.
Brian Taylor of the Hawks
notched the only two goals of the
middle period to put his club back
in front by three goals. Rick
Ingram picked up the assists on
each.
The final Tavistock goal came
at the 22 second mark of the third
period from the stick of Manford
Gardner.
The seventh Exeter score was
registered at 7:46 by Ken Pinder
as he completed a three-way
effort with Phil Knight and Fred
Mommersteeg. It came .on a
power play with Mark Fuller of
the Braves off for elbowing,
Game scoring concluded at
12:17 when John Van Gerwen
blinked the red light behind the
Tavistock net for the second
time. Assists went to Ken Pinder
and Fred Mommersteeg.
Brian Taylor with his three
consecutive goals led the Hawks
and shared point honours with
Ken Pinder and Rick Ingram.
break a 3-3 tie between the two
Hawks clubs.
Linemates Fred Mommersteeg
and. Ken Pinder drew assists on
the play.
The Hawks then salted the
victory away when Ken Pinder
broke in alone on the Mitchell net
and fired a lob shot through Dave
Holmes' legs for the clincher,
VanGerwen started the play
with a pass to Dave Kinsman.
The latter was dumped at the
Mitchell blueline, but still
managed to feed the puck to his
right where Pinder picked it up
foi' his dash to the net.
Mitchell started out strongly in
the contest and had local fans
worried when they opened the
scoring at the 3:30 mark of the
first period and then took a 2-0
lead with another goal just past
the mid-way point,
Fred Mommersteeg reduced
the lead to 2-1 by the end of the
first on a power play with Pinder
and Gerald Weido.
Exeterknotted the count at the
3:49 mark of the second frame on
a goal by Matt Muller with Don
McKellar picking up the assist.
