Shipka folk
still digging
By MRS. HUGH MORENZ
SHIPKA
Most people in this area are
digging themselves out from last
week's storm. Wednesday a
Michigan digger, followed by a
snow plow attempted to open the
16th concession road.
It took from early morning till 5
p.m. to come from Shipka to a
few yards north of the,
correspondents gateway, a
distance of about 2 miles. Friday
the snow plow crew pushed open
a one way passage through to 83
highway.
Mrs. Rudy Zondag, a kidney
machine patient, has been
staying in London with friends to
be able to get the care she needs.
Mrs. Jack Keller and Sherri
returned home here last Friday
night after being snowbound at
her parents Mr. & Mrs. Roy Kirk.
Most folks in this area were
without rural mail delivery for
about a week: Much credit is due
to the mail lady who covers this
route for the many stormy days
she got through with our mail.
Mrs. Willis Desjardine
returned Sunday from St.
Joseph's hospital, London.
Nancy Baker is holidaying at
her sisters home, Mr. & Mrs.
Tony Regier and Christopher in
Detroit.
Three school bus drivers in this
area, Ken and Ortha Baker, and
Bill Massie, were off all last week
and most of two days the week
before.
Sunday visitors with Mr. &
Mrs. Arnold Keller were their son
Ross and Mr. & Mrs. Bill Griffet,
Edward and Tracey of London,
Mr. & Mrs. Roy Gibson, Brad and
Mark of Crediton and Mr. & Mrs.
Jack Keller and Sherri.
The Keller's daughter Gwen
and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. Max
Windsor were injured in an auto
accident on No. 4 highway a week
ago Thursday.
Big Al joins
Pineridge list
The eighth annual Crippled
Kids weekend at the Pineridge
Chalet is set for the weekend of
February 18, 19 and 20. George
and Lucille Beer and Don and
Shirley Mousseau have again
lined up an interesting and fun
packed weekend for persons of all
ages.
The three day event begins on
the Friday night with a dance
featuring Joe Overholt and the
Standbys. Saturday will feature a
snowmobile poker rally and free
snowmobile rides for the
children.
Sunday will be the big day with
a pancake breakfast continuing
from 8:30 p.m. to the noon hour.
Heading the list of celebrity chefs
will be Bill Brady on CFPL in
London and Ralph Duffus of the
London Crippled Children's
Treatment Centre.
For several years now Brady
and Duffus have been vying for
best pancaking making honours
and their good natured quips will
add to the fun,
An added attraction this year
will be the appearance of Big Al
from CKCO television in Kit-
chener. Big Al will be on hand to
meet the many children expected
to attend.
Another poker rally will be hOd
Sunday afternoon and free
snowmobile rides will again be
available for the youngsters.
In the Chalet clubhouse Sunday
afternoon an excellent array of
talent has been lined up. These
include Joe Overholt, The Little
People, Gerald Davidson, The
Bradley Bunch and a number of
step dancers,

Council seeks financial
aid for beach patrols
p
4."
Last summer in Grand Bend
there were eleven water rescues
of a dangerous nature made by
the beach lifeguards and two
drownings. This summer the
situation could be worse if the
village does not receive some
financial aid from the province to
pay for beach patrols.
In the past, on north beach,
there has been a lifeguard on
duty but his or her main concern
was watching a buoyed off
swimming area in the centre of
the beach. This summer, if a
proposal by the Grand Bend
recreation committee is accepted
by council, there would be no
buoyed' off area. Rather, there
would be beach patrols to watch
the entire north beach. Last
year's two drownings took place
outside the restricted buoyed-off
swimming area.
Council has requested the
Ministry of Tourism be asked for
some financial support for the
beach patrols. Otherwise the
village will only hire three
lifeguards which is the bare
minimum necessary to patrol
such a large beach area.
General rules for the beach
patrol outlined in the recreation
committee proposal include such

things as warning boats from
venturing too close to the shore,
keeping swimmers from ven-
turing too far out into the lake,

beverages off the beach, keeping
water skiers away from the main

Last year fourteen boats were
warned away from the beach
area, ten lost children were
found, eight swimmers were
warned by lifeguards of their
dangerous behavior, seven cuts
were treated, six loose dogs

Bonnie Doone Manor on the
beach, when Kristie Sue, only
daughter of Mr. & Mrs. Melvin
Douglas, was married to David
Charles, only son of Mr. & Mrs.

points north for a skiing holiday.
Church News
Rev. H, Moore's sermon topic,
Sunday morning was, "Reach
Out," stressing the power of
touch. Special music was sup-
poled by Mrs. Ralph McKinnon
when she sang a solo entitled,
"Tell me one time, then show
me," accompanied herself on
guitar.
Rev. J. Campbell and members
of the congregation of Church of
God, conducted the evening
worship service at Blue Water
Rest Home, Sunday at 5.45 p.m.
Following this they gathered
back at the church and had their
annual business meeting which
had been postponed three times,
after falling off buoyant aids, one
case of broken bones and one
epileptic seizure were attended
to, and in two cases beach
visitors under the influence of
alcohol were asked to leave.
