Motors may not go on and lights may flicker out by 1980 unless Ontario Hydro can drive home its conservation message That's what H.K.Wright, Hydro's director of energy conservation, told businessmen at a one-day seminar sponsored jointly by Hydro and the Building No news from North Star Efforts by this newspaper to get some information on the status of North Star Yachts Ltd. proved futile this week. The Huron Park firm was placed in receivership lagt week. At that time, a spokesman for The Clarkson Company, London, indicated some workers may be recalled to finish off the in- ventory. However, two calls placed to the company this week were not answered. _About 60 employees were laid, off in January when the boat firm ran into financial problems and subsequently failed to meet a deadline set by the Ontario Development Corporation to raise funds from other sources. Fair board to meet Wednesday The annual meeting of the Exeter Agricultural Society will be held Wednesday, February 9 at the South Huron District High School library. The meeting was originally scheduled Friday but was postponed by the storm. Directors will meet at 7,30 p,m. and the general meeting will get underway 15 minutes later, Huron's Ag Rep Don Pullen will moderate a panel. Discussion will centre on "Where do we go from here with the Exeter Fair." :-: E. .14 4, 44 :lel,. U L L y , E i L5 V L L I g F. F. When the provincial Government imposed spending restraints in 1975, the corporation was forced to cut $6.5 billion from its spending program. That figure translates into a shortfall of four million kilowatts of power-the difference between estimated demand and supply. And four million kilowatts, Mr. Wright says, is equal to twice the power currently generated by the Pickering nuclear plant. What can be done to prevent. brownouts all over Ontario by the 1980s? According to Mr, Wright, the answer's simple : practice conservation. If growth in demand can be cut to a six per cent climb this year from the traditional seven per cent, then there will be ample • power for all users. "Any levelling off of electricity increases to those low levels experienced in the Sixties is not forseen for quite a few years unless there is a substantial lowering of interest rates and fossil fuel costs stabilize," March of Dimes project underway Volunteer canvassing for the Exeter campaign for the March of Dimes is continuing all week. Local chairman Dorothy Pfaff said Wednesday that only a few volunteers were out Monday night for the scheduled canvass. Stephen farmer injures knee A Stephen township farmer Bruce Shapton was injured late Tuesday afternoon when a snowmobile he was operating turned over in a huge snowdrift on Concession 2. Shapton suffered a shattered kneecap and underwent surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital Wed- nesday afternoon. CONCERNED A concerned citizen called the T-A this week suggesting that owners of all stores and buildings along Exeter's Main St. should clear the icicles and huge clumps of snow hanging from roof tops, window sills and awnings before a thaw sets in.
