High school basketball clubs
chalk up half dozen wins
Playoff time again
The first round of OMHA playoff action for three of Ex-
eter's minor hockey teams promises to be very exciting,
The local pee wee,. bantam and midget teams will be
meeting St. Marys in the first round of provincial play.
The playoffs against St. Marys start Monday night in
Embro with a tripleheader on tap. The pee wees start at 7
p.m. with the bantams taking to the ice at 8:15 and the
midgets square off at 9:30 p.m,
The return games in the best-of five series will be at the
Huron Park arena on Friday, February 4 with game times
the same as in Embro.
In regularly scheduled games this year, the Exeter and
St. Marys pee wees have each won a game, while the Ex-
•eter bantams and midgets were victorious in extremely
close contests.
The Exeter atoms will also be meeting St. Marys in the
first round of playoffs but dates have not yet been finalized.
Hawks on the move
The Exeter junior Hawks with their best record in
several seasons appear to be in good stead for the upcoming
playoffs and a run at the Ontario championship.
Currently the Hawks are in third place in the western
division standings with 40 points, but only two points behind
the league leading Mitchell Hawks and one point behind the
second place Tavistock Braves.
The Exeter club has played the same number of games
as Tavistock and two less than Mitchell.
The Hawks will face their toughest test of the season
Friday night when they travel to Tavistock to take on the
Braves.
Hawks manager Fred Mommersteeg is confident his
charges will fare well in the playoffs. Fred told us Monday
morning, "If we can win in Tavistock Friday night we
should Win the league championship. We have by far the
best goals against average."
Best of luck to Fred Mommersteeg, coach Ron Bogart
and the Hawks as they prepare for the playoff trail.
Snowarama for crippled kids
The third annual Whipper Watson's Snowarama will be
held this Sunday and it is being extended to 18 official
courses.
The London and district 100 mile Snowarama will start
and finish at Hully Gully and will take in a large area of
South Huron, North Middlesex and part of Perth counties.
The local Snowarama is sponsored jointly by the On-
tario Society for Crippled Children and local service clubs.
In this area the clubs are the Lions from Exeter, Lucan,
Grand. Bend, Parkhill, Ailsa Craig, Seaforth and Clinton and
the St, Marys. Rotary club,
There will be 11 checkpoints and these will be manned
by service club officials. In this area the checkpoints will be
at Farquhar, Whalen's Corners, Lucan Conservation area,
Cabineer's Log Cabin, west of Ailsa Craig; Darling's at Mt.
Carmel; Jack Riddell's farm, the Pineridge Chalet and
Hully Gully.
The London and district trail is a combination of ex-
isting club trails and new connecting trails constructed
specifically for this event.
The clubs through the construction of well marked, well
groomed and scenic trails have done a great job and will
keep the standards of quality and safety high until the last
snowmobile has completed the run.
Safety, always a concern of every snowmobiler will be
ensured by constant patrolling and the attendance of St.
Johns Ambulance personnel at each checkpoint. Com-
munications along the trail will be the responsibility of the
Forest City C-B radio club.
The trail co-ordinators will be Randy Collins, Ray
Potter, Pete Kling, Doug McGregor, Jack Brintnell, Rob
Morley, Don Froats, Greg McDonald, Don Darling, Tony
Martene and Don Mousseau,
Some didn't get away
The latest issue of the Ontario Angler and Hunter lists
the winners in the 1976 Big Fish contest sponsored by
Molson's and operated by the Ontario Federation of Anglers
and Hunters,
The biggest fish caught was a 48 pound, eight ounce
maskinonge landed in the Muskoka area. The largest
northern pike weighed in at 38 pounds and was caught in the
Thunder Bay area. Next came a 36 pound lake trout landed
in Lake Temagami and the biggest rainbow trout was just
over 21 pounds. A 10 year-old Brampton boy Douglas Borg
caught the largest walleye at 15 pounds in Lake Simcoe,
The biggest speckled trout tipped the scales at almost
nine pounds and the largeinouth and smallmouth bass
weighed 10 and seven pounds, respectively.
This type of news along with the extremely cold
weather should make area anglers rather keen to head for
their favorite fishing spots.
The Exeter Hawks scored a 9-7

decisively
The Exeter atoms turned in one
of their best performances of the
season Sunday as they blanked
Strathroy 5-0 in regular
Shamrock league play.
The locals although shor-
thanded with only 10 players in
the lineUp scored two goals in the
first period and broke the game
wide open with three more
successful shots in the middle'
frame.
A highlight of the game was the
work of netrninder David Rook. It
was his first start since breaking
a wrist in early December and
he was outstanding throughout
and was deserving of the shutout.
The game was only a little
more than two minutes old when
George Pratt put the Exeter
youngsters on the scoreboard on
a pass from Darren Vandergunst.
Near the end of the first period,
captain Brent Dawson scored on
an unassisted' effort to make the
score 2-0.
After 30 seconds of play in the
middle stanza, Darren Van-
dergunst converted p pass from
George Pratt and exactly a
minute later Steve Laithwaite hit
the mark on a solo dash.
Vandergunst and Pratt again
teamed up to account for the fifth
Exeter goal and the final marker
came from the stick of Jeff Pfaff
on a three-way effort with Steve
Laithwaite and Doug Scott.
