Her thoughts soon began to change after repeated attempts to move from bed, "I began to think to myself of the possibility that the trouble was caused by polio and not the flu, but I kept telling myself that polio was a kid's disease", said Sadie. Her husband Jack not willing to take any chances phoned the doctor, who came immediately. After a quick examination he was almost certain it was polio. "I remember when I was told. My whole body was suddenly gripped with fear, Questions without answers flashed through my mind. What about my son? He was only three at the time. Who would take care of him? Would I ever be able to walk again?" It was almost a year before some of these questions could be answered. During this time Sadie repeatedly baffled the doctors by accomplishing things they thought impossible. The task was a big one, but within no time she was cleaning house, cooking and doing all those things that a young mother has to do. Her son was always ready to help in the kitchen and by the age of five he could cook a tasty full course meal, Today, people dropping in on Sadie look forward to sampling her jams, relishes and other preserves made from the Over 80 Club Mrs. Mary Gallop, Grand Bend, will celebrate her 90th birthday on January 27, 1977. vegetables and fruits of her garden.
