When distributor points begin
to go bad, you may lose
engine power. The points are
likely to be sticking, pitted,
burned or bouncing. They're
easy and inexpensive to
replace.
Normal winter changeover in-

manual transmission; it makes
for smoother shifting.

They're not - just a new

Disastrous week for
Jets in Continental loop
Supporters of the Lucan-

cheer about this week as their
favorites were on the losing end

Friday in Preston the Jets were
blanked 6-0 by the Preston
Jesters and Sunday night at the

Stratford Perths. Game time is
set for 8.15 p.m.
In London Sunday, the Kings
broke the game wide open with
eight goals in the second period.

in the middle frame, the London

The battle for first place in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" Western division
continues to be close and ex-
citing.
At the moment the Mitchell
Hawks and Tavistock Braves are
deadlocked for first place with 35
points apiece and the Exeter
Hawks are only one point farther
back in second spot with 34
points.
The Tavistock club enjoys two
games in hand on Exeter and
three on Mitchell and in the im-
portant loss column has only
four while their two close op-
ponents have each dropped a half
dozen games.
The Exeter Hawks won two of
three games played over the
weekend, Friday in Seaforth the
Hawks scored an 8-2 win but they
then split two games with the
Lucan Irish,
In Hensall Satuklay night, the
Irish triumphed by a score of 7-6
and in Zurich Sunday, the Hawks
regained their winning ways by
downing Lucan 7-3.
The Tavistock cause received
another boost Saturday when Mt.
Brydges downed Mitchell 8-5
The Hawks continue to lead the
league in a defensive way having
given up the fewest goals, 80. In
scoring they are behind
Tavistock, Mt. Brydges and
Mitchell.
The only outing for the Exeter
juniors this week will be Sunday
night when they play host to
Thamesford. The game will get
underway at 8 p.m. at the Zurich
arena.
Start early
Against Lucan Sunday night,
the Hawks built up an early 5-0
lead before the Irish could hit the
scoreboard midway through the
second period.
Don McKellar registered two
of the first period scores for the
Hawks. Both came on passes
from Kim McKinnon. Also scor-
ing in the first 20 minutes of play
was Ken Pinder on a three-way
effort with Fred Mommersteeg
and Steve Jennison,
Ken Pinder was hack with his
second successful shot early in
the middle frame on a play
started by John Van Gerwen and
Noel Skinner converted a pass
from Fred Mommersteeg.
Jim Maguire was on the firing
end of both goals for Lucan in the
second period.
Goals by Rick Ingram and
Noel Skinner completed the Ex-
eter counting in the third session
and Murray Connolly hit the
mark for Lucan.-
Gerald Weido and Steve Jen-
nison assisted on Ingram's
score and Brian Taylor and
Rick Ingram helped on Skinner's
marker. The two stars for the
Hawks were Noel Skinner am.
Kim McKinnon.
Irish Roar Back
Three unanswered goals in the
third period allowed the Lucan
Irish to chalk up Saturday's 7-6
victory over the Hawks.
The third period goals for the
Irish came from the sticks of
Jerry Groenewegen, Randy
Kraul and Cec Nickles.
The Hawks had taken a 4-2 lead
after the first 20 minutes of play.

Phil Knight and the latter set up
John Van Gerwen for the fourth
Exeter counter.
Scoring in the first period for
Lucan were Jim Maguire and
Brad Taylor.
In the second period each team
scored twice. Gerald Weido fired
Hawks in second
Junior league standings tight
also registered on a -.pass from
John Van Gerwen.
Work slackens
Despite the severe wintry weather conditions ex-
perienced recently officials at Lucan hope to have ice ready
in the new arena there before the current hockey season
comes to an end.
Reeve Ivan Hearn told us last week that he felt
reconstruction would be advanced enough by the end of
February to allow Lucan teams to participate in playoffs.
Here in Exeter construction of the recreation centre is
also progressing and should certainly be completed in time
for the 1977-78 hockey season.
In Lucan new walls and a roof are being put over the
present ice facility which will allow the rink to be used
much quicker than if it was a new building.
When the arena is closed in workmen are expected to
begin on the second phase of construction which is building
a hall and auditorium to be attached to the south of the pre-
sent building.
More interesting slats
The weekly statistics released by Nick Martin for the
OHA Continental senior hockey league continue to contain
interesting items.
Veteran defenceman of the Lucan-Ilderton Jets has
become the 20th player in league history to get five assists
in one game. Galloway, a partner with,.Jets manager-coach
Don Urbshott in the insurance business also holds part of
another record.
Galloway along with his team-mate Rick Fifield and
Brian Chinnick of the London Kings have scored three
power play goals in one game.
Brian Murphy has tied Bill White's Jets record of six
misconduct penalties in one season and Jack Criel has tied
Bill Bourne's mark of 36 penalty minutes in one game.
More Leaf history
In recent days we have had a chance to have a better
and longer look at the history of the first 50 years of the
Toronto Maple Leafs and continue to find it very in-
teresting.
In the first 50 years, the Leafs have had 12 different
coaches and 11 captains. Punch Imlach with 10 years of ser-
vice was around the longest as coach of the Toronto club,
Next in line was Hap Day with nine years and present coach
Red Kelly is in his fourth year at the helm.
In the role of captain George Armstrong was in charge
of the club for an even dozen years with seven years for Ted
Kennedy and six years for Dave Keon the next best record.
The first Leaf coach back in 1927-28 was Alex Romeril.
Others in between in addition to the ones previously men-
tioned were Conn Smythe, Art Duncan, Dick Irvin, Joe
PtifkgAli, King Clancy, Howie Meeker, Billy Reay and
Jotihny McLellan.
Other captains were Hap Day, Charlie Conacher, Red
Homer, Syl Apps, Bob Davidson, Sid Smith, Jim Thomson
and the present captain Darryl Sittler.
Only one man has been connected continually with the
Toronto Maple Leafs through their first 50 years. While the
founder of the club Conn Smythe has been around through
all the years it's trainer Tom Nayler that has been a cons-
tant help to the Leafs,
Nayler who has taken care of equipment for Toronto
hockey teams since 1918 comes to the Gardens these days
by choice. He explains, "I'm working past my retirement
age mainly because no one ever got around to let me go."
Nayler is a hockey man. He eats, breathes and sleeps
hockey and the Leafs of today are as dear to him as they
were that night of November 12, 1931 when the Gardens of-
ficially opened and the Leafs lost 3-1.
Tommy Nayler is counting on being a Maple Leaf for
his twelfth Stanley Cup. He won't ever see his name engrav-
ed on the trophy. But he adds, "I don't need that anyway. I
have the Maple Leaf tattooed on my rear."
He has been a true Maple Leaf for a half century in
spirit and he says he has been around long enough that he
can see Stanley Cups coming.
"The guys today are not only playing together they
have a feeling like a family. What happens to one happens to
them all. That sounds corny maybe, but those great teams
we won the championships with were all one family right
down to the stick boy. And that's the feeling I get about this
one," adds Nayler.
More speakers
The list of top notch speakers for the fourth annual Ex-
eter Lions club sponsored Sportsmen's Dinner set for
February 8 is increasing nicely.
The latest report from chairman Doug Ellison has
Darwin Semotiuk attending. Semotiuk is coach of the
University of Western Ontario Mustangs who last year won
the Canadian college football championship.
Semotiuk joins Tom Bell, NFL football referee and
Tony Gabriel of the Ottawa Rough Riders to head the
speakers.
The list of expected attenders now includes former
Leaf goalie Johnny Bower, golfer Marlene Stewart Streit,
Toronto Blue Jays manager Roy Hartsfield, wrestler Pete
Michienzie, figure skaters Sherry Biaer and Robin Cowan,
diver Cindy Shatto and Dick Shatto of the Toronto Argos.
Officials are still attempting to come up with another
big name from the hockey world. This time of the year it is
difficult to obtain star hockeyists. The only chance comes
through injuries.
Don't forget the dinner is on Tuesday, February 8 with
all proceeds going to aid crippled children. Tickets are $25
each and can be obtained from any Lions club member.
