Silver Stick tournament in Forest. They dropped a close 3-2 decision to Sarnia. In the first game of the tourney Friday the Exeter youngsters blanked Sarnia Township 1-0. Goal tending featured both games involving the Exeter team. In the win over Sarnia Township, Rick Gilfillan in the Exeter nets playing his first game of the season was out- standing and according to coach Arn Laithwaite, "the main reason we were able to win," The only goal in the Exeter win in the first game came from the stick of Scott Lovie on a pass from captain Brent Dawson in the first minute of play in the second period. Goalies John Goodale and Jeff Cook of Sarnia frustrated the Exeter team time and time again in the second game. Steve Leith- waite of Exeter was in alone on breakaways on four occasions and was able to score only once. Sarnia was first on the scoreboard at the 23 second mark of the first period and Exeter was able to tie the score midway through the second period on a solo effort by Scott Lovie. Sarnia again took the lead late in the middle frame and the best Exeter could do was a goal by Steve Laithwaite on an unassisted effort at six seconds of the third period. Sarnia fired the winning goal with less than four minutes remaining in the game. Rick Gilfillan again played a steady game in the Exeter nets. A popular government without popular information or the means of acquiring ills but a prologue to a farce or tragedy or perhaps both. -- James Madison. The Lucan-Ilderton Jets broke even in two Ontario Hockey Association continental Senior league games this week and hold a tight grip on second place in the standing. Wednesday the Jets lost a golden opportunity to gain on the league leading London Kings when they suffered a 5-3 loss to London. The Jets regained their win- ning ways Sunday night in Woodstock with a 3-2 victory over the Royals in sudden-death overtime, The Kings are on top of the league with 39 points while the Jets are second with 33 points. The London club has played four more games than the Jets. The Stratford Perths are third with 26 points and the Preston Jesters fourth with 24 points, This week the Jets travel to Preston for a Friday night contest and will be at the London Gardens Sunday night at 7 p.m. to meet the Kings. Baynham gets winner The winning goal for the Jets in Woodstock Sunday night came from the stick of Exeter Junior graduate Barry Baynham. At the 6.55 mark of overtime, Baynham Was successful , on a series of rebound shots toput the puck pass Ken Kitching in the Woodstock net. Rick Fifield and Roth picked up assists. The Jets moved ahead 2-0 in the first period , and the Royals bounced back with two successful shots in the third period to force overtime. At 10.13 of the opening session Rick Fifield was in the right spot to flip a loose puck into the net. Assists went to Doug Galloway and Steve Proctor. A jets power play attempt was successful at 17.19 when Ed Robb scored on a rebound on a play started by Terry Johnson and Jacques Cousineau. The Royals hit the scoreboard for the first time at 5.09 of the third session when Ray Tilley found the mark on a quick wrist shot with Jets goalie John Robertson screened on the play. Less than three minutes later the game was all tied up with Don Jones scoring on a two-on-one break to set the stage for the sudden-death overtime. Both clubs had excellent chances to score in overtime before Baynham's shot ended the game. Goalies John Robertson of the L-I club and Ken Kitching of Woodstock were outstanding throughout the contest. Late rally fails Against the London Kings, Wednesday night the Jets behind 5-1 at the end of the second period rallied' in the final 20 minutes of play with two goals but could not get any closer to the league leaders, Ken Pettit and Bill Robbins were the London marksmen in the first period and Ed Robb replied for the Jets. He ripped a shot high into the left corner of the London net on a breakaway set up by Jacques Cousineau and Jamie Robb. The Kings scored three unanswered goals in the second frame. Pulling the triggers were Larry Russell, Jerry Gryp and Chris Bannerman. Russell's score came as a Jets power play backfired. The two third period goals, for the Jets came late and from the sticks of Jacques Cousineau and Randy Roth. Cousineau counted on passing help from Jamie and Ed Robb and defencemen Doug Galloway and Barry Baynham provided the assists for Roth. Two game misconduct penalties were handed out. They went to Brian Murphy of the Jets as the aggressor in a second period fight and Gerry Gryp of London in the final frame as he was the third man in on a fight, Rob Kell estine and John Roberston shared goal tending duties for Lucan-Ilderton. Steer This Way With newly appointed coach Ron Bogart at the controls Sunday night, the Exeter Hawks turned in one of their best scoring efforts of the season as they blanked the Port Stanley Lions 12-0, The Hawks with Sunday's victory at the Zurich arena held on to second place in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" standings with 32 points one point behind the league leading Mit- chell Hawks. The Tavistock Braves are third with 31 points but actually have the best record having played two games fewer than Exeter and three less than Mitchell, Tavistock has suffered only four defeats while the other two clubs have lost five times each. The Hawks will be in action three times this weekend, They start the busy schedule with a game in Seaforth, Friday night. Saturday they will be in Hensall to meet the Lucan Irish and the same two clubs will tangle in Zurich, Sunday night. Both games are at 8 p.m. The Lucan Irish home games for the balance of the schedule will be played in Hensall due to the holdup of construction of the Lucan arena by wintery weather conditions. Officials of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association named Ron Bogart as the new coach of the Hawks late last week. He suc- ceeds Glen "Rocky" Weise who was the current coach. Bogart coached the Exeter bantams to a provincial cham- pionship in 1974-75 and to the semi-finals last year. Good combination While the Hawks went on a real scoring spree against Port Stanley goalie Randy Lovie was just as outstanding in recording his first shutout of the season. The Hawks leading point getter Ken Pinder continued to head his team in the scoring department with a three goal effort. Pinder started his club away with a successful shot on a power play at 10.15 of the opening period as he converted passes from John Van Gerwen and Fred Mommersteeg. Only 20 seconds later the Hawks were ahead 2-0 as Kim McKinnon hit the mark on a pass from Matt Muller. Before the first 20 minutes had elapsed Ken Pinder scored again on a three-way effort with Noel Skinner and Rick Ingram, At 8.50 Kim McKinnon fired a successful shot on a three-way combination with Matt Muller and Paul Br000ks and a minute and half later Gerald Weido scored with passing help from Rick Ingram and Brian Taylor, Rick Ingram was back with assists on the next two goals provided by Gerald Weido and Matt Muller. Noel Skinner also picked up an assist. With only a minute and a half left, Brian Taylor notched his second goal of the night on a play originated by Kim McKinnon and Noel Skinner. The two Exeter stars of the game receiving McKnight Men's Wear certificates were Ken Pinder and Kim McKinnon.
