Announce
seasons in
Ontario's 1976 deer seasons
were announced recently by
Natural Resources Minister Leo
Bernier. Following the general
format of last year, most deer
hunting zone boundaries adhere
to .boundaries of wildlife
management units in northern
Ontario while in the south they
generally follow county and
township boundaries.
Most seasons open at about the
same time as in 1975. There will
be no hunting season in areas of
northern Ontario where deer
occur infrequently.
In northwestern and north
central Ontario the bows-only
season extends from September
15 to 30 for residents and non-
residents.
In the area west of Fort
Frances, the gun season runs
from October 30 to December 15
for residents and October 30 to
November 15 for non-residents.
In the Dryden-Lac Seul area,
the residents-only season runs
from October :30 to December 15.
"The absence of non-resident
1976 deer
Ontario
hunting will help to moderate the
deer harvest in an area ex-
periencing a population decline,"
Mr. Bernier said.
The residents-only gun season
in the area from the eastern
boundary of Quetico Park to
Wawa is October 4 to December
15, coinciding with the resident
• moose season.
Resident deer hunting in the
Kenora-Alikokan area extends
from October 4 to December 15,
while the non-resident season
here is October 11 to November
15.
Primitive weapons hunting on
the Aulneau Peninsula opens on
the same date for all hunters —
October 4.
On Manitoulin Island, the bows-
only season for residents and non-
residents opens on October 9, four
days earlier than in 1975, and
extends until October 31. The gun
season is longer in the western
,portion of . and because. the
deer population there is at a high
level.
The area north of the French
and Mattawa Rivers will be open
from November 1 to 6 to residents
only. A U-shaped area north of
Sault Ste. Marie is open to
residents and non-residents from
November 1 to 13, as is the Parry
Sound area,
In southern Ontario, there are
several changes from last year's
seasons. Both residents and non-
residents may hunt with shotguns
and primitive weapons in the
counties southeast of Ottawa
from November 1 to 4.
In Grey County and the
southern part of Bruce County,
there are no gun seasons. The
season in the Muskoka area has
been increased from three to six
days.

Boogemans himself is no
stranger to canoeing. He and his
brother have competed in several
events already this year, in-
cluding the Lower Thames race
held last week in which they
placed first.
There may or may not be prizes
for their placing in the race,
Boogemans said nothing is
guaranteed, except what will be
awarded in the various towns
they will he stopping in along the
way.
The race is being staged in
commemoration of the opening of
the Olympics. It will also be run
overland, with any manner of
vehicle being allowed. One man
in Hamilton has an Evil Knevilish
idea of a motorcycle with wings
that he says will allow him to
glide to Montreal with in-
termittent returns to solid earth,
But,Rene Boogemans trip in the
canoe, along with the other
canoeists, is a remake of the trip
carried out hundreds of years ago
by furtraders. Their venture in
the Great Canadian Race is truly
Canadian.

and finally to Montreal. Just
before Montreal, they will have to
shoot the Lachine rapids.
Boogemans, an expert caner,
expects little trouble from the
rapids; "they've been shot
before" he said.
Not all the 20 paddlers will be
going at the same time. Nine will
man the North on any given day
and between nine and a dozen in
the Montreal. The others will go
with what Boogemans calls the
"road crew," In the event of
sickness or fatigue, they will
move into spare the regulars.
The road crew will look after
food and accommodations for the
canoeists, stopping each time
they stop.
Some of the families of the
racers will be travelling along
with them as they venture forth,
making a total party of about 60
people Boogemans said.
As yet, they have not found a
sponsor. Sponsorship would be
nice, said Boogemans, but if none
is forthcoming they will do it on
their own anyway.

setting out from Ontario Place 40
miles away. It will be the
beginning of the canoe portion of
the Great Canadian Race, which
will send the canoes from Toronto
to Montreal in less than a week.
One of the canoeists taking part
in the venture, which is also being
run on land, will be Rene

with 19 other area residents,
Boogemans, the other
canoeists, and some of their
families will be setting off in two

I've just recently obtained my driver's license and want
to buy a good used car at a fair price, It was my original in-
tention to buy one privately, but some of my friends tell me
that it can be, "very risky."
What exactly should I watch out for? Also, can you ex-
plain about mechanical certification?
Car buyers should be especially careful when contemplating a
private purchase as, unlike the registered dealer, the seller has
neither a license to lose or a business reputation to protect.
It's always wise to check the car's registration, (if the owner is
a slanged this can be done through the Ontario Motor Vehicle
Registration Branch, Parliament Buildings, Toronto,
This will enable you to find out if the automobile is a "one
owner", or how many times it has changed hands. Before a used
automobile can be legally driven in Ontario, it must carry a cer-
tificate of Mechanical Fitness from a certified mechanic. (Make
sure he is the owner or licensed employee of a dealer or repair
garage.)
Unless you have a firm estimate of the costs of repairing an
"unfit" car from a certified mechanic of your choice, it is not
recommended to buy an uncertified car with plans to have it
brought up to a roadworthy standard, since obviously it could
be very easy to run into "unforeseen problems."

I think I am going to have to find another hobby!
Up until now mine has been music, and I have spent a
considerable amount of money building up a fair size
collection of 8-track tapes and record albums. I quit buying
tapes some time ago because of the high percentage of
useless, non-playing ones, that I had amassed, also they
are more expensive than records and I have several with
the same tune or vocal repeated twice on the one tape!
So lately I have been spending my money on record
albums, but the high percentage of warping on recently
purchased discs is unbelievable! I see this as nothing short
of, "one giant rip-off!"
Many record manufacturers have been forced, (because of
the new high costs of raw materials that, come from derivatives
from petroleum products) to cut their records on thinner
pressings, particularly the less expensive albums.
So for record collectors, it is now more essential than ever, to
make sure they are stored properly. Do not expose them to
sunlight and always see that they are kept in their wrappers
when not in use.
If you find that you have purchased a warped album, then
return it immediately to the store, you will find that most stores
will replace it without question.

In recent weeks "IMPACT" has received several complaints
from readers that have sent money to various Mail Order Firms
for a variety of merchandise and all the letters have two things in
comon, one being that their cheques or money orders were cash-
ed immediately, (if not sooner!) and the complaint was always
the same, .. . no merchandise received after many many months
of waiting/
"IMPACT" can only contact these firms hoping to speed up
delivery, sometimes a little extra pressure helps, but alas there
are many other instances where our letters too, are completely
ignored, especially by firms located on the other side of the
border.
We must point out to our readers, that although the majority
of these firms are classed as legitimate, in a great many cases
their business ethics leave "much to be desired."
A number of these firms DO NOT have the advertised item
stocked in sufficient quantities, they order AFTER receiving the
money from people responding to their advertising promotion,
and this of course is the real cause that often is behind the long
delay of parting with your money and finally receiving your
goods.
