runners scampered home as
Gord Mauer sliced a double to left
field.
The Irish failed to score in the
seventh and this set the stage for
the Royals' surge in the bottom of
the seventh.
Ron Mason reached first on an
error to lead off the last of the
seventh and promptly stole
second base, Jim Pfaff then drew
a walk and then a controversial
play occured to end the game.
Jack Glover started it off by
laying a bunt down towards first.
On the throw, the Lucan first
baseman reached into the path of
the runner, A hard collision oc-
curred and Mason and Pfaff both
scored as the ball rolled free.
Barry Baynham led the hitting
as he went three for three. Gord
Mauer, 'recently picked tip from
Huron Park, had 2 hits and drove
in three runs. Scott Burton added
a double and Jack Glover a single
to complete the Royals hitting.
Gored Mauer picked up the win
as he toiled on the mound. He
struck out two and gave up seven
scattered hits.
Dennis Carty pitched the game
for Lucan and took the loss.

Under 14's take two games
The Exeter Royals opened
their season at home May 20 with
a thrilling, come-from-behind 5-4
win over last years league
champs from Lucan.
Lucan took a 4-1 lead into late
innings hut the Royals kept the
pressure on and finally won with
two runs in the bottom of the 7th.
The Irish Nine were first to hit
the scoreboard in the fourth in-
ning when Gerry Finkbeiner
singled to right field to start the
rally. Dennis Carty then doubled
and Kevin Lightfoot reached base
on an error followed by Doug
Johnston, the designated hitter,
who singled to give the Irish
a 3-0 lead.
The Royals got one run back in • the last of the fourth as former
Lyndon Duke Barry Baynham
got on base on an infield single
and scored on a similar hit by
pitcher Gord Mauer.
Lucan then went ahead 4-1 in
the top of the sixth when Kevin
Lightfoot, Doug Johnston and
Dennis Burt all rapped out
singles to chase in one run.
The Royals narrowed the gap
in the last of the sixth as Paul
Charrette, a newcomer to the
team, led off with a walk. Barry
Baynham then singled and both

team settled the score with
Grand Bend this week when they
defeated them 4-2 Thursday in
Exeter.
Two weeks ago the Grand Bend
crew had beatenExeter 4-1 in the
first of the two exhibition mat-
ches.
Exeter led 4-1 at half time on
goals by Richard Helm, John
Mickle, Doug Hoffman and Phil
DeHaan, Joe Nitra had the lone
marker for Grand Bend in the
opening half.
Nick Vandenberg scored the
second Grand Bend goal.
Tuesday night the Exeter crew
handed Goderich their first
defeat ever when they beat them
2-0 in Goderich.
Doug Brooks in goal collected
the first shutout ever recorded in
this age group as the game
marked several milestones in
league history.
It was the first shutout, the first
time Exeter has had back to back
wins, and marks the third game
in a row that Doug Hoffman has
scored a goal.
John Mickle opened the scoring
in the first half with his second
goal of the season sending the
Exeter crew into the second half
with a slim one goal lead.
Hoffman assured the win when
he put in his third goal of the
season in the second half.

The Royals scored first as they
notched three runs in the first
inning. Jack Glover hammered to
lead off the game. Barry
Baynham reached on an error.
Terry Bourne singled and both
scored as Scott Burton and Andy
Bierling sacrificed the runners
home.
Rusty Smith singled in the
bottom half of the first and came
around to score.
The Irish added one in the
second as Doug Johnston tripled
and added two in the third as Leo
Dewan and Kevin Lightfoot
singled.
The Royals then broke it wide
open in the top of the fourth
scoring five runs to take a
commanding 6-4 lead.
Brian Hodgins led off the inning
with a triple and singles by Ron
Mason, Jack Glover, Gord Mauer
and Barry Baynham produced
the five runs. The Royals added
one run in the sixth as Barry
Baynham singled, stole second
and scored on Terry Bourne's
single.
The Irish added another run in
each of the fifth, sixth and
seventh innings but the Royals
hung on to win.
Brian Hodgins pitched the first
four innings for the Royals but
was relieved by Gord Mauer who
picked up the win; his second in a
row over i.,tican,
Doug Johnston started for
Lucan and took the loss being
relieved in the fourth by Brian
Lightfoot.
Terry Bourne had three hits to
lead the hitters while Jack
Glover, 'Barry Baynham and
Brian Hodgins added two each,
Andy Bierling and Doug Pearson
each had singles and Ron Mason
added a double.
The Royals travel to Ailsa
Craig Thursday night and then
play host to Poplar Hill May 30 at
9:00 p.m.

In the weekly Juniors tour-
nament held at Ironwood golf
course Kevin Gilmour and Dave
Bogart took the low gross and low
net honors in play on May 20.
Gilmour, with an 82, led Steve
Pearce who shot an 86 for
second and Bruce Shaw Jr., who
tallied a 90 for third in low gross.
Bogart's 74 edged out Jeff Fuller,
who shot 75 and Greg Prout, who
had a 76.
The highest score on hole three
went to Mark Vandergunst, who
took nine shots to complete the
hole. Bill Simmons was voted
most honest player in the tour-
nament.
The t-shirt which is awarded to
the player coming closest to the
Hidden Score Total was won by
Mark Vandergunst, The hidden
score for last week was 61.
