By PAUL SALMON
lven though May 24 is
celebrated as the Queen's bir-
thday, the odds are that back in
1941 Mr. Clement McCann was
thinking of another special lady
on that day, That lady was Joan
Gelinas, who became Mrs.
Clement McCann thirty-five
years ago this past May 24. A
special mass was held in Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church on
this past Monday in honour of the
couple, and as well, there was 0
nostalgic atmosphere as Mr. &
Mrs, McCann renewed the same
vows that they said at St. Peter's
Church in St. Josephs thirty-five
years earlier. The couple, who
reside on a farm just outside of
Mt. Carmel on the Dashwood
road, will be honoured further at
a dance to be held May 29, at the
Dashwood Community Center.
On Sunday, Alay 16, another
glorious event took place at Our
Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, that
being the baptism of Amy Lynn
Johns who is the daughter of Mr.
& Mrs. Steven Johns.
On Friday, May 21, after
having escaped the confines of
school a little earlier than usual, I
observed that the school-yard at
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was not
only filled with many two-legged
creatures, but some four-legged
ones as well! The four-legged
creatures turned out to be horses,
which struck me as rather odd
play-mates for a group of school
children. Apparently, the grade
seven pupils at the school,
wanting to raise money for a trip
to Midland later in June, were
providing horse-rides to paying
customers in other grades, The
four-legged chauffeurs, one pony
and one horse, were supplied by
Theresa VanOsch, a grade seven
pupil at the school. I was relieved
to discover that I had not gone
back in time to the days of the old
west, but that I was merely ob-
serving an excellent display of
independence and ingenuity
On this past Sunday, Mrs.
Catherine Morrissey of Mt.
Carmel was visited by her son
Ben and his wife Mary. Mrs.
Morrissey and the London couple
also took an automobile ride
through our area and got a first-
hand glimpse at the throngs of
tourists flocking to beach-side
resorts including Grand Bend.
