How can the student feel the need of any kind of respect for authority when he sees a parent breaking the law by continually exceeding the speed -limit or drinking and driving and who, to the student at least, appears to be a successful or accepted member of the community? How can the student develop any respect for authority when he knows that eventually he can do as he wishes if he 'badgers' parents long enough? How can the student value a respect for authority when he sees and hears a parent rush to his defence and make excuses for him when he is asked to face an authority figure and FRWAY, SATURDAY. EMS Dear Mr. Editor: On reading the article with the h eadline "Harsher treatment necessary' in your Opinion Column of April 29,1976 I feel that it is time someone had the courage to 'stand up and be counted' in reacting to the con- tinual destructive criticism of situations and problems con- nected with educational and other established institutions. I feel that criticism of this type helps to develop the "contempt for all types of authority" which your writer maintains exists among our young people. Supporting the critical in- fluence in the development of a contemptuous attitude on the part of our young people is the ADULT _,ENTERTAINMENT By KATHY COOPER ELIMVILLE Mr. & Mrs. Herbert Heywood presented their daughter, Dawn Elaine, for baptism during the church service Sunday morning. Secondly, an investigation conducted through secondary school principals might prove most revealing concerning parental reaction to sending students home in an inebriated state, Thirdly, talking with in- dustrial management may also change his assertion that in- dustry would act as directly as he suggests. An examination of these three aspects might open his eyes concerning his his query" what is it with our school system?" A better question might be "What is it with today's society?" Thus we have two questions, a question and a better question. Part of the answer to question 1, "What is it with our school system?" must surely be that our school system has removed Christian Education from its curriculum and is fostering a godless society. Why has this been allowed to happen? The answer is found within the an- swer to question 2 "What is it with today's society?" Today's society over the years has gradually but deliberately turned its back upon God and upon Jesus Christ our Saviour. Christian morals and Biblical standards such as the Ten Commandments and the Sermon on the Mount have been stacked in the attic with the family Bible. This is the bad news, Now, here is the good news. There is a way back. There is a place where we may find all the answers we seek. That place is "the Cross". For the Cross is where God is to be found, the cross is the place where forgiveness is to be found, the cross is the place where love is to be found, and the cross, is the place where we may find each other as members of a family, where mutual trust and respect, love, peace, joy and Christian fellowship have been re- discovered and established to the glory of God and the benefit of all mankind. George A. Anderson account for an infraction of some societal rule or law? How can a student respect authority when he knows a hotel will serve him without questioning his age as long as he 'looks' old enough? How can a student respect authority when he hears adults jeering at and distructively criticizing the established authoritative institutions such as the school system, the police, the church, etc. Perhaps we as parents and citizens of a community should be expending our energies in examining what we are doing to foster a respect for authority rather than criticizing and 'passing the buck' toinstitutional authority figures. I'm not suggesting that our educational system in Ontario is free of any responsibility in fostering a contemptuous at- titude. The teaching profession is subject to the same weaknesses as the legal, medical or any other profession and it is only as good as the people who make up its composition. Since teachers are all humans as are parents, lawyers, doctors, etc., they are subject to the same °human frailties and in this respect do perhaps infuence in some few instances their students' poor attitude towards authority,' state strongly, however, that these instances are a great deal fewer than are the times when teachers try to inculcate a respect for authority. Another point that might be made with regard to this article is the fact that the writer is evidently not certain as to where responsibility should be placed. In paragraph 2, he suggests that teachers are between the devil and the deep sea because of the law that legally lowered the drinking age. In paragraph 3, he implies that students are no worse than some adults and excuses the student on the grounds of lack of experience, poor example and natural en- thusiasms. In paragraph 4, he reverts to supporting teachers but follows immediately in paragraph 5 with an accusation that the school system is remiss in its duty. Did the writer intend the format of this article to be indicative of the ambivalent at- titude of society?
