The members of the lodge and the subordinate lodge will attend church service at the Carmel Presbyterian church May 23 at 10:15 a.m. The nomination of officers for the ensuing term was held. The topic `"l'anzania" was given by Mrs. E, Chipchase, who told us that the Christian Church in Tanzania sees itself as a co- worker with the government. The meeting was chaired by Mrs. Russell Erratt. At the business session plans for the Beef Bar-B-Que, to be held May 26, were completed. The meeting closed with the hymn, "Come let us sing of a Wonderful Love" followed by prayer. UCW holds pot-luck supper A pot-luck supper was the highlight of the May meeting when Unit 2 of the Hensall UCW met Monday night with Unit 4 as their guests. The ladies enjoyed the meal of cold meats, casseroles, salads and desserts. Mother's Day was the theme of the meeting which followed and was opened by a poem on mothers read by Mona Alderdice. The devotional, given by Eleanor Mansfield, directed thoughts to Hannah, who dedicated her son Samuel to the Lord in thank- fullness for his birth. Following the dedication of the offering, the business was con- ducted by unit leader, Hilda Payne. Arrangements were completed for the beef bar-b-que on May 26 and the flower-S in the church in June. In was decided not to hold a baking booth at the Kinette Rummage Sale on May 15. The program, led by Grace Drummond and Mona Alderdice, completed a very enjoyable evening. Games and contests were enjoyed by all present. After the games, all who had helped were thanked and the meeting closed with the mizpah An increase in the general levy in Hensall's 1976 budget means residents with a $2,000 assessment, the average assessment in the village, will be paying out $48 more in taxes. The budget, settled at a Monday night meeting that was ostensibly called to discuss a preliminary budget, calls for a 24.16 mill rate increase for the coming year for public school supporters. The mill rate hike is largely due to Hensall council having to rid themselves of a surplus of money from the 1974 fiscal year in their 1975 budget. With the surplus, which the law requires be dispersed, council "underlevied" in Clerk- Treasurer Bob Heil's words. This underlevying left the village in a break even position after 1975. Although the mill rate will jump almost 25 mills, the Baptismals at Hensall United The Sacrament of Baptism was administered at the United Church service at Hensall on Sunday when Mr. & Mrs. Al. Corbett, Mr. & Mrs. Terry Haugh and Mr. & Mrs. Ron McBride presented their children for baptism. Baptised were Catherine Donna Corbett, Theresa Lynn Haugh and Michael Ronald McBride. Rev. Don Beck conducted the service observing Mother's Day as "The Festival of the Christian Home" and took for the topic of his sermon, "Taking things for granted." Next Sunday, the Exeter United Church Junior Choir, under the direction of Mrs, Marianne ' McCaffrey, ' will present "Sam", the story of the Good Samaritan in modern musical form, at Hensall United Church at 11 a.m. greatest proportion of the extra money Hensall residents will be paying will find its way somewhere other than the village's coffers. 12,86 mills are going to the county education levy, the largest portion of the increase and another 2,45 mills will go to the county. Hensall itself will see 9.85 mills of the increase. The mill increase will mean a public school supporting resident will face a levy of 103.93 mills, up from 1975's 79.77. Separate school supporters will be paying 109,47 mills, and a commercial public school supporter will face a levy of 118,92 mills, up from 91,26, Present plan, for apartments Preceding Budget discussions at the Council meeting Monday night, Nicholas Hill, Town & Country Planner, Goderich, proposed an alternative apart- ment building design to Gary Glenn's previous submission ,in March 'of two buildings in Hen- salt. The new 18-unit apartment building, to be erected on the south corner of Queen and Wellington Streets would be smaller than the original plan with sufficient car parking. Reeve Baker remarked that the complex would be nice for the elderly, hearing in mind its proximity to downtown. Although the new site would have only 1,2 parking spaces for every car as opposed to the 1.4 that is required by Huron County, the proposal appeared ac- ceptable to Council. "I like that plan" said Harold Knight, "I can see nothing wrong with it." It's hard for a woman waiting in a restaurant not to look as if she's afraid she's been stood up. Mother's Day topic
