Bruce R. Heath, Director of
the Huron County Children's Aid
Society, has been named to the
Steering Council of the
Management Information
Systems project for children's
services in the provincial
Ministry of Community and
Social Services. The eight
member Council, composed of
senior members of the Ministry,
and executive directors of the
Children's Aid Societies of
Toronto, and Hamilton, is
responsible for the development
of a comprehensive, province-
wide information system, to be
streamlined and integrated with
the present financial and
statistical data systems in the
child welfare network,
Mr. Heath presently serves on
the London District Retardation
Services Committee of the
Ministry of Community and
Social Services, the Early School
Leaving Committee of the Huron-
Perth Separate School Board, the
Continuing Education Council of
the Faculty of Social Work of
Wilfrid Laurier University, and
the Steering Committee for the
proposed Huron Mental Health
Centre for Children and Youth.
He is a member and past-
president of the Goderich Rotary
Club, and chaired the London
Symphony Orchestra series in
Goderich this past season.
I've never met a horse that
could talk as fluently as Mr. Ed
or save people as efficiently as
Fury. Likewise, I've never seen
a dog as smart as Lassie or Rin
Tin Tin or a cat as finicky as
Morris. To this list of animal
celebrities, though, I can add a
few names.
For example, Lady is a dog
that knocks on doors. When she
wants in, she raps three times on
the door with her paw. If no one
answers, she barks three times.
If still no one answers she starts
over again a little louder. She
never loses her patience no
matter how slow those human
doormen are.
Another intelligent dog, Boo,
puts his front paws on the edge of
the bed while his six-year-old
mistress says her prayers, and
he echoes her amen with a bark,
Queenie, part terrier and part
Heinz 57, leaps on the back of the
family's pony and takes a ride.
Another trick she uses to gain

attention is to push her head un-
der someone's hand and rub it,
for she's determined to be petted
One way or another.
Meanwhile, Jackie the cat
rings bells when she wants out. A
set of old-fashioned sleigh bells
hangs inside the front door of her
house. They often jingle when no
one is near, and I wondered who
the phantom bell ringer was until
one day I saw Jackie tug them.
When she wants in, she meows
loudly like an ordinary cat or
perches on the living room win-
dow sill until someone notices
her,
Corky is another cat that can't
dance like his peers on TV, but
he knows how to open doors, He
stands on his hind legs and
stretches to reach the knob with
his front paws, Although he
hasn't yet succ4ded in opening a
door, he's on the right track.
The purpose of most barn cats
is to control the mouse popula-
tion. I hesitate to call our eats
lazy, but they won't slap at a
mouse unless it runs over their
paws. Nevertheless they're fat
and sleek, because they get all
the milk they can drink. Maybe
they're not so dumb, after all.
Although Nicki, an Arabian
standardbred, hasn't saved
anyone's life yet, she obeys
almost all her rider's com-
mands, and she's learning to
bow. Her master hopes to woo
some horse show judges with
that little trick,
Curly is a Shetland pony that
had the run of the farm when she
was a colt. She followed people
around like a dog. Later, when
she was broken in to the saddle,
she decided when and where
each ride should end. She simply
laid down, taking the saddle and
the rider with her. If the rider
didn't get off in time, that was
his tough luck.
Not to be outdone by the other
pets, Harry the Rabbit has a
crowd-pleasing stunt of his own.
When someone rubs his stomach,
he rolls over on his back and
pricks up his ears,
Supposedly our pets are "dumb
animals", but sometimes it's
hard to tell who is leading whom.
They cajole we humans into
supplying them with food to eat
and a place to sleep. With a purr,
a woof, a neigh, a playful nudge,
a lick or a beseeching gaze, they
melt our harsh reprimands.
They may never join the list of
animal celebrities, like Fury,
Lassie, or Morris, but each of
them has their own little tricks
to keep their masters in line.
WE COULD HAVE STAYED HOME TO DO THIS! — Even though there are plenty of dishes to do at home,
this seemed to be a pleasant task for these three ladies at the Exeter UCW smorgasbord, from left, Verna

Senior Citizens held their
monthly meeting in Legion Hall
on Tuesday May 4 at 7:30 p.m.
The meeting was opened by the
President Mrs. Rundle
welcoming the crowd of nearly
70 people after they had enjoyed
an hour of euchre and crokinole.
Mr. & Mrs. Hoffman were in
charge of the program starting
with the singing of "0 Canada"
and several choruses with Mrs.
Leila Finkbeiner at piano.
We were then favoured with
numbers by a quartet of ladies
Mrs. C. Hoffman, Mrs. Merkley,
Mrs. Sillery and Mrs. Marshall
accompanied by Mrs, Fink-
beiner on piano.
Eight young girls danced and
sang several action numbers
which were enjoyed by all.
A couple dressed as aged man
and wife presented a dialogue.
The part of the old man was
played by Mrs. A, Orr and old
lady by Mrs. Hoffman.
Percy Merkley accompanied
by Mrs. Hoffman on piano played
several mouth organ selections.
Mrs. Finkbeiner gave several
humorous readings. Several trips
were discussed by the president
and anyone interested can
inquire about them by asking any
member.
After the singing of God Save
our Queen the ladies of Trivitt
Memorial Anglican Church
served a lovely lunch.
We thank the different ladies
organizations that are so faithful
in this respect.

vivid description of her holiday
spent in Mexico at Christmas.
She displayed many artifacts

Mrs. Elsie Henderson and
Norman Speir entertained one
hundred residents in the normal
care sitting room on Monday
afternoon with old-tyme-music
and a sing-a-long.
The residents in Women's Bed
Care are entertained each
Tuesday afternoon in their dining
area. We would hope that the
visitors to that area who play the
piano would feel free to play a
few numbers; and I know that it
would he greatly appreciated.
Coloured slide pictures of South
America and Western Canada
were shown by Clifford and Jean
Henderson of Brucefield for
"Family Night". The Hen-
derson's gave a very interesting
commentary along with the
pictures and Clifford's mother,
Mrs. Elsie Henderson, played
piano favourites before the
program and during in-
termission. Miss Mary Van Camp
expressed the appreciation of the
residents.
