A "Plant Party" sponsored by
Court Valentine Lady Forester's
in the Lodge Hall April 5 proved a
great success judging by the
large attendance of over 100
people.
The party was put on by
Country Flowers of Exeter and a
beautiful selection of potted
plants was on display. These
could also be purchased during
the evening, Mrs. Larry Hern
president of Court Valentine
introduced Mrs. JoAnne Dinney,
a florist who gave a lecture on
plants of all species and the care
that was needed to grow them
successfully,
This was followed by a question
and answer period. Lucky win-
ners of three door prizes of plants
were Mrs. Harold Mills, Mrs.
Fred Crouch and Mrs. Robert
Spence.
The proceeds from the sale of
tickets was for Cancer Research.
Mrs. Elmer Summers Chairman
of the Education Committee of
the Lucan-Biddulph branch of the
Canadian Cancer Society, said a
few words in connection with the
campain for funds and the
"Great Family Ride" and urged
all who could to be out on April 25
and "Ride for Cancer."
The members of Court
Valentine are very grateful to
Country Flowers for offering to
donate 10 percent of the evening's
sales to Cancer Research which
resulted in over $100 being
realized for the project.
The evening ended with a
delicious dessert lunch and
coffee,
UCW Units meet
UCW Unit I met at the home of
their president Miss Mabel
McNaughton on April 7. The
meeting opened with scripture
reading Matt. 13: 24-30 followed
t,iy a hymn and the lesson
thoughts which was entitled "On
Eagles Wings."
Mrs, Clare Westman and Mrs.
Austin Hobbs convened the
program, Mrs. Westman gave a
paper on "Belief & Practice"
which dealt with several
questions such as "Good will
Gestures, or Bribery Which?",
resulting in a stimulating
discussion. Mrs. Hobbs read two
poems from the book Easter
Ideals, one on Spring, the other
entitled God's Corner.
Mrs. Elmer Summers gave a
vocal solo "Stranger of Gallilee."
Members were reminded of the
General Meeting on April 13 and
the Regional" Rally at Siloam
Church on April 28. Mrs. Clifford
McRoberts and Mrs. Glen
Jameson assisted the hostess to
serve lunch.
Mrs. Douglas Brown was the
hostess for Unit 3 on April 6, Mrs.
Brown presided and conducted
the business. Mrs. Lloyd Mardlin
introduced the guest speaker, Dr.
Sheppard, a specialist in Hyp-
nosis at St. Mary's Memorial
Hospital, who provided a very
interesting subject. At the end of
the program, Mrs. Jeff Bryan
thanked Dr. Sheppard.
Mrs. Harold Mills and Mrs.
Erie Chevoncek assisted the
hostess to serve lunch.
Unit 4 met at the home of Mrs.
Kenneth Hardie, April 7. Mrs.
Nelson Tate presided and opened
the meeting with the "Lesson
Thoughts" entitled "On Eagles
Wings."
The Roll Call was answered by
a verse pertaining to Easter.
Mrs. Art Torrens and Mrs. Henry
Wissel were in charge of the
program which dealt with
"Practice & ,belief", a good
discussion followed.
Two quilts which the Unit had
made were on display and a
project for the Bazaar was talked
about. Mrs. A. Crockett and Mrs.
S. Crawford assisted the hostess
with lunch.
Mrs. William Jones was the
hostess for Unit 5, April 7. Mrs,
Malcolm Spence vice president
was in charge of the meeting and
opened with Lesson Thought
entitled, "On Eagles Wings".
During the program. Mrs. Clare
Bryan gave a reading pertaining
to Easter "The Great Promise"
and Mrs, Joseph Bryan read a
poem, "Easter Assurance". Mrs.
Garnet Baker assisted the
hostess with lunch.
District Deputy visits Granton
Masons
At the April meeting of the
Granton Masonic Lodge 483
A.F.&A.M. the members were
honored by the official visit of
Right Wor. Bro. Keith Flynn
District Deputy Grand Master of
South Huron when Wor. Bro,
Percy Hodgins and his officers
conferred the First Degree on a
candidate. Visitors were present
from Quebec, Monkton, Mitchell,
Exeter, London, Lucan, St.
Marys, Ailsa Craig, Parkhill and
most of the surrounding districts,
Friendly Neighbors meet
A good number of Friendly
Neighbors dropped in on Thur-
sday afternoon to work at hand-
work, play euchre, pool, shuf-
fleboard and crokinole. The piano
is now repaired and tuned. Plans
for Opening Day were discussed.
It was decided to have it on May 7
at 8:00 p.m. A program has been
arranged for. Everyone is
welcome to come,. It was also
decided to open the Scout Hall
April 25 when the Great Family
Ride for Cancer takes place to
serve coffee and soft drinks to the
riders.
Church news
At the United Church Rev.
Mary McInally was in charge of
the morning worship and of-
ficiated in the service of Con-
firmation and Holy Communion.
Those young people who were
welcomed into the Church
membership by Confirmation
were Vickie Bakker, Leanne
Hudson, Carol and Cheryl Hut-
cheson, Debbie Wissel, Bill
Jacklin and Brian Knapman. A
reception by transfer for Mr. &
Mrs. Wm. Knapman and Mr. &
Mrs. Wm. Jacklin was com-
pleted.
The meditation was entitled
"Enthrone the King" and dealt
with being a Christian, the
minister said, meant being
willing to accept Christ into our
lives. By partaking of the
Sacraments of Holy Communion
we do this, it also means being

At St, Thomas Anglican
Church, Rev. Mary Mills was in
charge of .the morning service.
Her sermon was On Palm Sun-
day.
During the singing of the
Precessional Hymn the Sunday
School classes followed the Choir
down the centre aisle waving
palm branches, then sat in the
front pew while Rev. Mills ex-
plained the story of Palm Sun-
day, which she illustrated with
apicture of a scene of Jesus en-
tering Jerusalem.
Palm crosses were presented
to members of the congregation
by Susan Noon, Betty Ann and
John Herbert.
A.C.W. meeting
The April meeting of the
A.('.W. was held in the Church
Hall April 7.
Mrs. Jack Noon presided and
opened the meeting with prayers
and the scripture reading.
Several items of business were
discussed.
Mrs. J. Noon and Mrs. Lois
Herbert were chosen as voting
delegates to the Annual Meeting
of the A,C.W. to he held at St.
James Westminster Anglican
Church London on May 6. During
the evening a crazy quilt was
tied. Mrs. Noon closed the
meeting with prayer and also
served lunch,
4-H news
The "Tangled Threads" held
their meeting at the home of
Ferne Mardlin April 3. The Roll
Call was answered with
suggestions for Achievement
Day. It was decided that the skit
would be based on a fairytale
theme. The hook covers were
displayed and members ex-
pressed their thanks to Brenda
Cook for transferring the design.
Leader, Mrs. Micheal O'Shea,
then showed the girls how to
complete their learning stitches
articles for Achievement Day
and leader Mrs. Joe French
demonstrated how to do the
French Knot The meeting closed
with the Pledge, the next meeting
to be held a. the home of Diane
Garrett.

PUBLIC NOTICE
In order to recognize the 50 years of
medical service by Dr. M. C. Fletcher to Ex-
eter and surrounding communities, a com-
mittee has been set up to plan and co-
ordinate this recognition. The public is
therefore advised:
1. A community picnic rivill be held for Dr.
Fletcher on Sunday, June 27 at 3:00 p.m.
in Exeter Riverview Park. Presentations
will be made followed by a pot luck lunch.
Bring your own food and utensils. Hot
and cold drinks will be available in the
park.
2. A book is being prepared illustrating the
service rendered by the doctor. Anyone
having anecdotes, stories humorous or
otherwise that would be helpful to the
committee please send them in, Include
old photos.
3. A binder is being provided to contain
thank you letters or letters of personal
appreciation. Write or type your letter to
.Dr. Fletcher on plain white paper 81/2 " x
11". If possible enclose a snap of you or
family, suitable for mounting with your
letter. Send the letter to the committee.
4, A suitable plaque is being prepared to
honor Dr, Fletcher. Send cash donations
to offset -costs to members of the plan-
ning committee or to Harold Snell, Mrs.
Earl Austell, F1. E. Pooley, Carfrey Cann.
