Snow said that the decision to close was based on the "small highway mileage presently maintained in the Exeter area," claiming that the present level of service to the area could be maintained by increasing the mileage of larger patrol yards in the region. "It would appear that the Minister is not prepared to reconsider, but if we do find that there is a reduction in the level of service established for highways in the Exeter area, then I cer- tainly feel we should pursue the matter further", Riddell ob- served in a letter to Exeter Council. Jack Riddell, M.P.P., Huron- Middlesex, had some disap- pointing news for Exeter area residents this week. He was unable to budge the provincial Ministry of Transportation and Communications with regard to two concerns, a traffic light, and the local highway patrol yard, The M.P,P.'s request that Minister James Snow reconsider a request by the town to install a full traffic light at the in- tersection of Highway 4 and 83 was turned down, Snow indicated that the Ministry's study of traffic volume at the intersection had indicated that it was still too low to merit a light, Snow added that the criteria for traffic light installation was not based on the number of traffic accidents occurring at an in- tersection, as many citizens Continued from front page target figures given to the committee by Cambrian Con- sultants Ltd., the engineering firm who drew up the plans, were not necessarily final figures. He said that the swimming pool that had been planned at close to $700,000 was probably too elaborate and could be built for closer to $400,000 to $500,000. He Said that it was conceivable that the entire recreation centre, consisting of an arena, hall, and Swimming pool, could be built for close to the proposed Council target figure for an arena, and hall or about $1 million. Although the committee had looked for approval of the entire package, they seemed satisfied that Council had come to a decision to at least proceed with the arena project. The finance sub-committee of SHRCC will rneeet with Council again to discuss fund-raising plans, once Council has held its joint meeting with the other municipalities who might be involved in the venture. Council's decision to go with a new arena followed a new development in the situation when notification was received that tire safety reneovations would have to be made to the old arena in addition to repairs to the roof in order to reopen it.
