The letter also added that council makes a "generous" tax concession every year to the Legion and asked why something similar could not be done for a church. Reeve Bob Sharen commented that the tax concession to the Legion is not all that substantial, He said the Legion still must pay the county's portion of the taxes and is only exempt from paying the share that would go to the village. Councillor Hob Simpson recommended that no change be made in the method of assessing the church. He said any effort to make changes would be just playing games. "It would cost more to check it Out than the small amount in- volved," he concluded. No easy job BY JIM BECKETT T-A EDITOR One of the most in- teresting duties for reporters on weekly newspapers is covering municipal council meetings. This writer welcomed the opportunity of visiting the council chambers in Grand Bend Monday night to report what is happening in this busy community. Although the relationship between councils and' the press gets' strained from time to time I am sure both groups recognize the im- portance of the other. One of the things that I appreciated was the . courtesy extended by this group of community- minded individuals. After the meeting was over all the councillors introduced themselves and in- formation regarding the proposed parking plans was handed out to the three reporters. It was almost midnight When the. meeting ended 4,, but that didn't stop reeve Bob Sharen from taking me on a late tour of the town. It was obvious from listening to him and the councillors that they were concerned about the future of the village and that they were doing their best to cope with the many problems that arise in running the village. After hearing some of the difficulties they are forced to deal with my admiration for local councils has returned. You often hear them criticized for actions that are not agreeable to everybody but you never seem to see many people that want to come forward and take their place. When you consider the hours they put in and the salary they get., for their efforts you have to agree that councillors are truly an exceptional group. Large grant for Playhouse Huron Country Playhouse Chairman, Bill Cochrane, Q.C., Goderich, announced today that the Richard Ivey Foundation, London is contributing $10,000 toward the Playhouse Capital Fund. "The funds are specifically eatfmarked for lighting in- struments" said Mr. Cochrane, "and brings the Playhouse that much closer to matching its $60,000 Wintario grant. If we can \ qualify soon enough, the Playhouse' stage lighting System will be installed in time for the 1976 Fifth Anniversary Season which previews on June 29", Members of the Playhouse Board expressed appreciation to the directors of the Richard Ivey Foundation for their confidence in the Playhouse organization, "We are extremely grateful", said Mr. Cochrane, "for the vital rOle this foundation has played in helping the Playhouse to estab- lish itself".
