WILL The March meeting of the United Church Women was held on Monday evening, March 1, with 25 ladies present. Mrs. Glen Stewart opened the business section of the meeting with a poem "Be Pleasant". Mrs. Mac I-lodger Offered to write a letter to the foster child. The World Day of Prayer Service will be at Elimville on Friday, March 5. The postponed Presbyterial Annual meeting will be held at Brucefield on March 17 at 9:30 a.m. It was decided to cater to the Curling Banquet at the Kirkton- Woodham Community Centre on April 17, The members decided to invite two other ladies groups to the Easter Thank-Offering meeting in April. Carmel would like to express a fond farewell to Basil and Marlene Glavin and their daughter Kelly, The family recently moved from the villag e to a farm owned by Basil's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Pat Glavin, The farm is located on the Mt. Carmel road about four miles east of our village. The residence of Mr. & Mrs. Wilfrid Hogan always seems to be a busy one, and this past weekend was no exception. Among their visitors was Mr. & Mrs, Hogan's daughter Rita, her husband Jerry Hartman and the Hartmaas' two sons, Gary and Brian. Theresa Dietrich, daughter of Mr. & Mrs, Charles Dietrich, was able to take some time from the nursing course she is taking in Woodstock and visited her parents here in the village this past Sunday. Besides studying madly for the exams that my educators insist are necessary, I was also able to join my parents in welcoming several guests to our household on this past Saturday. Among the visitors was my grandmother, Mrs. Lilian Finch and my aunt, Marge Shepherd. Over the last week, the Mt. Carmel hockey team has con- tinued a rampage ,of victory, bringing the possibility of an overall championship closer and closer. On Tuesday, February 24, the team shut out the Malcolm- Welding team, defeating them by a score of 6-0, On Thursday, February 26, as the series with the Malcolm-Welding team continued, Mt. Carmel'was again victorious, RA time winning by a score of 6-2. The teams are playing a series based on points, with two points being alloted for a win, one point for a tie. The first team to attain eight points ad- vances to the final play-off round. As of February 26, then, the Mt. Carmel team holds the upper hand and in terms of points, posSesses five points to the Malcolm-Welding team's one. By JOY SCHEIFELE AILSA CRAIG Edward Jacob Stire and his wife, Ida Matilda (Becker) celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering last Sunday afternoon. "The weather was quite dif- ferent than it is today", recalled Mr. Stire. "We drove to the church in a horse and cutter. There was a lot of snow, but it was a beautiful sunny day". The couple were married in the Lutheran parsonage in Dash- wood on March 1, 1916, "We went to Niagara Falls for our honeymoon" reminisced Stire, "It was wonderful. We took the boat and went right un- derneath the falls". Following their honeymooh the couple took up farming on the 14th concession in Hay town- ship. They remained on the farm until 1954 when they moved into Dashwood, where Mr. Stire still resides. The couple have three children: one son, Harold, who also is a resident of Dashwood, and two daughters, Alice (Mrs, Gerd Muller) and Elda (Mrs, John Barr), both of London, and eight grandchildren., The couple celebrated their anniversary with a family gathering at Craigholme Nursing Home in Ailsa Craig, where Mrs, Stire has been a resident since September 1975. The Stires received several plants and bouquets of spring flowers, cards and other remembrances. Many friends also called at the home to extend congratulations and good' wishes to the couple on their 60th an- niversary. Senseless damage done in Ailsa Craig Saturday morning found at least three of Ailsa Craig's stop signs knocked over by a witless driver. On one occasion the driver had obviously got himself stuck in the mud during his ad- venture. Deep rut marks showed' evidence of a car having been driven diagonally across the field behind the former Ailsa Craig Public School at the same time leaving behind much main- tenance work to be done. Tire marks also showed that a car had been recklessly driven across the large lawn area in front of Craigholme Nursing Home onto McAndrew Street. Roll up your sleeve to save a life... BE A BLOOD DONOR Grand Bend Lions Club sponsored an Effective Speaking Contest in the Grand Bend Public School Monday evening. The first three winners were: David Sandilandi,. "The Huron Country Playhouse", Sarah McClure, "The Operation of a Food Blender", Sylvia Burkley, "The Raided Medicine Cabinet". To each contestant the president, Don Finkbeiner, presented a diploma; to the first three win- ners, $15 each. Personals Tuesday evening, the Young People's Group of Zion United Church sponsored a slide presentation on Credit Unions. Mr. & Mrs. William Harper of Mitchell and Mr. & Mrs. Alvin Passmore were Saturday evening guests with Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Ballantyne. Mr. & Mrs, Rick Mellenger and Alicia spent the weekend with Mr. & Mrs. Ken Brazier of Brantford. Mr. John Miner of London spent the weekend with Robert Bray. Mr. & Mrs. William Rohde were Thursday evening supper guests with Mr. & Mrs. Norman Johns of Woodham and visited Friday evening with Mr. & Mrs. Russell Morley of Exeter. Several from this community called at the R. C. Dinney Funeral Home on Sunday and Monday where the late Mrs. Mary Hern lay at rest. Mr, & Mrs. Gordon Hoggarth and Mrs. Mary Hodgert, Exeter accompanied Mr. & Mrs. Arnold Cann to Florida. They returned home on Sunday evening. Mr. & Mrs. Howard Cunnington and family were guests on Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. Jim Romphf of Arkona. Armin Schlenker and Mrs. Ed Finkbeiner attended the Tuesday session of the United Church Huron-Perth Presbytery at Centralia United Church. Ruth Ann Finkbeiner has completed the course at the Marvel School of Hairdressing, London. The Women's Institute catered for 190 people at the Federation of Agriculture banquet in the Community Hall Friday evening. Gordon Hill, Varna was guest speaker; Rev. Bruce Pierce led in prayer. Jack Riddell MPP was among the guests. At the 4-H organization meeting, Monday evening, members were divided into six clubs. with clubs 3 and 6 tem- porarily combined. Leaders are: Club 1, Mrs. Don Finkbeiner, Mrs. Cliff Kenney; Club 2, Mrs, John Miller, Mary Anne Mar- tene; Clubs 3 & 6, Mrs. Norman Hyde, Mrs, Peter Wuerth, Anne Dearing Club 4 Mrs, Ed Nethercott, Mrs. Nick Lan- sbergen; Club 5, Mrs, Glenn Hodgins, Mrs. William Muller. The party was held in the Community Hall Saturday evening. When they returned home there was another surprise.
