Foods of all sorts carry bac- teria. Most are harmless. However, poultry sometimes carries Salmonellosis which is a common bacterial food-borne disease that affects both humans and animals. Usual symptoms in The Institute emphasized, however, that while steps should be taken to provide the energy necessary for food production, it is equally essential that agriculture conserve energy and utilize current and future energy sources efficiently, To this end, the brief urged that research be initiated or ac- celerated (as the case may be) with a view to increasing the energy efficiency of agricultural production. Such research should be concentrated on technology and agricultural practices which would conserve energy, make better use of the "free" energy of the sun, and better use the energy and other potentialS of "waste" materials from agriculture and industry, At the same time, the search should be continued for new energy sources, In addition, the Institute em- phasized that expanded and improved education and ex- tension services are needed to humans are vomiting, diarrhea and fever. The department has issued a pamphlet called "Bird Wat- ching" which gives a number of tips on proper preparation and storing of raw and cooked poultry in order to avoid the growth of the bacterial. Cooking kills most bacteria and storing at refrigerator tem- peratures prevents most of them from growing, the department says. For a copy of the pamphlet write to Public Relations Officer, Health and Welfare Canada, 9th Floor, 789 Don Mills Road, Don Mills, Ontario, MSC 1T5, encourage the wide application of present day knowledge as well as the results of future research to a more efficient use of energy in food production and distribution. The Institute pointed out that use of high quality land for food production minimizes the energy required to produce a given amount of food. Accordingly, it urged that for this reason, as well as many others, it is essential that all Class 1, 2 and 3 land be retained for food production. Finally, the Institute says that a program designed to make the Ontario consumers aware of the importance of agriculture to the economic and social welfare of the province should be initiated, Such a program would, in turn, underline the necessity of providing adequate energy to enable agriculture to produce food effectively and economically and would illustrate this is to the advantage of the consuming public. A motion was passed in which a formal protest was made stating that as representatives of Christ, who carried on a healing ministry, the Presbytery was more concerned about the effect hospital closures on people, rather than on the economical and statistical effects outlined by government. Letters from the Presbytery to this effect are being sent to the Hon. Frank Miller, leaders of opposition and local MP's. Some of the United Church ministers said they would attend the public meeting being held in Clinton this week to lend their support to the residents there who are protesting the closing of the hospital. Delegates also presented a suggestion that delegates take office five months earlier than they do now. Everyone Most Welcome Refreshments will be served Times-Advecate, February 26, 1976 Pane 19 Presbytery meet s at Centralia The Ontario Government should develop and adopt a priority system of energy allocation designed to ensure that agriculture and the food system can continue to provide the food needed by a growing population, , This was one of the main recommendations of the Ontario Institute of Agrologists when it presented its brief "Energy and Agriculture" to the Cabinet Committee on Resources Development today. In developing such a priority system of energy allocation, the Institute also recommends that a study of energy requirements of the agricultural system be initiated immediately and that a forecast be made of the energy requirements of agriculture in the province over the next 25 years. It was noted that energy used to get food to our tables makes up 12-15 percent of the total energy requirements of the Province.
