HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Exeter Times-Advocate, 1976-02-26, Page 25Editorial At South Huron, like other high schools, legal responsibility for student behaviour during school hours lies with the principal, vice-principal and the teachers of our school, However, when the teachers of SHDHS are teaching classes and both the principal and vice-principal are busy in the office and throughout the school, quite a bit of student behaviour respon- sibility lies with the student body and should lie op its governing force the Prefects, During dances and concerts, Prefects working with the Stu- dent Council act as a sort of Police force keepingall participants in line. During the school day noise and litter are just some of the problems that must be dealt with. Prefects walking the halls can keep these problems more in check. If the senior students stick together to combat behaviour problems, now, these problems, in time, would diminish. Plan, office for students Canada Manpower is establishing offices again this year to serve the special needs of area students. The Goderich office will be located in the Federal Building in the former Farm Credit Office, The Huron Park office will be located in the Huron Park offices of Manpower and Immigration. While the official opening will take place March 22, registrations are being taken now from those students and em- ployers wishing to get an early start on their summer plans, James Barnes, 29, a resident of the Village of Nile, has been appointed Student Placement Counsellor. He has worked previously in the Goderich area for the Federal Department of Public Works and as a personnel manager in local industry, Jim is spending the first few weeks visiting local employers to introduce himself and determine their student needs. He is also visiting all the area secondary schools to register students and give advice on where and how to find a summer job. You may laugh and think this is silly but just take a look around you at a basketball game or any other event in the school, Besides the people playing, there may be ten more people standing around and all they're doing is filling in time. It's not only our sports that involves school spirit, it's respect for the school. For instance the cafeteria at lunch time — it looks like a bunch of animals went tramping through it. It doesn't take much muscle to pickup your dirty dishes and garbage and put them where they belong, Also if you don't like what your mothers' put in your lunch bag you don't have to throw it across the cafeteria or at someone you dislike.11 takes more effort to do that than to just leave it in your lunch bag, The halls are the same way. Do there have to be garbage pails all along the halls so you don't have to go three feet out of your way to find one? I know that you get a lecture about these things almost every 0 week but as of yet nothing has been done. And nothing will be done if you don't do it. I'm not saying that everybody doesn't' have school spirit — a' lot of people do but to make the school really work everyone has to. Have some respect for your school and when your friends leave some garbage remind them of it, Throw your garbage in a garbage pail not on the floor. The final part of respect is at the dances. The winter carnival made a lot of people realize how little respect people have for our school . Because of a few in- considerate people or should I say animals that decide to butt their cigarettes on the gym floor SORRY! We can repair it no matter how little (or how great) is the damage. Unless there is something done the juniors now are going to go through school not knowing what school spirit is and not having any. So come out and do something about it, Nobody is going to laugh at you; as a matter of fact they will likely be very proud of you. If you can remember back to when the girls basketball team was in the semi-finals and the gym was packed and cheering, nobody laughed and look at the effect it ha d on the team. They didn't win but they gave it a good try because of the cheering. There may not be any teams left to cheer for in the years to come so get out and cheer for them while we have them. It not only helps the team but makes you feel good too. I am begging you to improve the school spirit if not for yourself at least for the juniors. It's all up to YOU! A very concerned senior student LORI ROWE Dear Editor: Recently an article was ,placed in the paper stating that there was a grave drinking problem in the school. The following week various articles disagreeing with the article that there was a drinking problem were added to thepaper, Unfortunately a number of dances have been cancelled because of trouble caused during the dances. Obviously articles against the drinking problem were wrong or there wouldn't have been a need to call off the dances. This means a lot of innocent people will be punished along with the trouble makers. This is very unfair to the majority of students who go out to enjoy themselves without causing a disturbance at the dances. I have been to some of the dances and find it very disgusting and stupid to find drunk people from grade nine to thirteen scattered throughout the halls. The situation has gotten out of hand and its about time that various kids in South Huron High School grew up! She's not really weird — just a bit odd We ask a question and shell only nod She's the kind of girl who likes to hide You know, like her mind has almost died She's really pretty, from what we see We could really tell if more open she'd he. She walks around, a zombie they say Some state she's insane — I say she's OK It may not be her fault — you never know She talks to no one, she could be shy though It really seems like she's wearing a mask What does she do for fun — I simply ask? I'll go up to her — you know, say hi! They say it's no use — I guess they already tried . . . Who cares what they say! I don't need their advice And anyway, you never know, I bet she's real nice!! Graham of the Ontario Provincial Police is extremely concerned with the rising crime rates in OPP jurisdiction, The major areas of concern are the shocking increases in violent crime, Homicides increased by 30.9 percent. In 1974 there were 71 homicides, in 1975, 93. Robberies increased by 23 Board studies structuring at meeting A study of the structuring of the schools in the Huron-Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board jurisdiction was discussed at a special meeting of the board Monday night. The study into the structuring of the schools was prepared by the administrative staff at the direction of the, board at a meeting on October 14. A three-hour discussion on the structuring of Curriculum in the .19. schools led by Joseph Tokar and Alexander Easton, superintendents of special ser- vices and program respectively, passed without incident. However, when the discussion led to the structuring of the Stratford schools, a sensitive area seemed to have been touched for two Stratford trustees — David Teahen and Howard Shantiz. They asked that the discussion continue in committee of the whole and said the whole meeting should have been held as com- mittee of the whole. Some of the trustees expressed surprise that the meeting should have been held behind closed doors, including the chairman, In the end the press representative was asked,' to leave at 11 p.m. and not report the discussion.
